An informational brochure for NationalGeographics Big Cats Initiative.

Professor Cory Kerr, COMM130 Section 2Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.

Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

For my brochure the document size and format were chosenfirst, then paper mockups were created to help me visualize the finished product. I studied National Geographics publications to better emulate their aesthetic style. Images were chosen to maximize visual impact. The logo on the back panel was created in Adobe Illustrator and modeled after a housecat, not a lion. I printed this brochure several times before I was satisfied with the layout and fold spacing.

Another entirely digital design. I gathered several photographs and began experimenting with shapes and lines in Adobe Illustrator. The original draft was lines, but I decided solid shapes looked much better and communicated stronger imagery. This logo was modeled primarily after a photograph of a housecat, not a lion, and took approximately two hours for me to complete.

A montage of photographs centered around a spiritual theme.

Professor Cory Kerr, COMM130 Section 2Adobe Photoshop

Unify layout with consistent theme and dominant spiritual message.

Learn to blend images gradually using masks.

Demonsrate advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.

This project began with the message, not sketches. I used Adobe Photoshops layer masking feature to combine several images into one composition to communicate the concept I had chosen to represent for this assignment. Additional effect layers and blending modes were used to create a more seamless feeling throughout the image. Some people standing along the right side of the background had to be edited out of the image with the clone stamp tool.

Fewer sketches were involved in this project than my previous logo work; instead, the majority of my work on this design was done in Adobe Illustrator. The letter o was made into an apple shape by changing the color and adding leaves, which were originally larger. The darker green below was added to suggest form.

Use basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Keep designs simple with light watermarks and lots of whitespace.

I repeated colors and typographical elements on both sides of this business card design to emphasize unity. The plant on the front of the card was drawn using the same shapes found on the letter o in the logo and was originally much smaller. On the back of the card I repeated the round shape in the letter o to better unify the subject and the background. The lineart border was created to give my branding a certainold-fashioned feeling,

Drawing on the colors used in the logo design, I made the background of the letterhead a very light green and incororated the o shape as a background element. To keep a clean feeling I minimized the contact information included at the top of the letterhead, restricting it to the name and logo. I elected not to reuse the linework I made for the matching business card in this design.

Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.

Rather than use the template provided in our class, I opted to create my own from scratch. I wrote the underlying HTML and CSS by hand. I chose a blog post-like layout for my web page and included a header typical of many blog designs. The lineart borders on the top and bottom of the content are actually solid lines with white gradients drawn over them; it was necessary to make the elastic layout I wrote viable at smaller window widths.

A black-and-white flier for an upcominggraduate conference event.

Professor Cory Kerr, COMM130 Section 2Adobe InDesign

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

    Keep links in InDesign intact.

This project began with two dozen thumbnail sketches and was narrowed down to the best four, which were refined and combined to become the final product. The layout was created in Adobe InDesign, using the pen tool to create the curved shape on the bottom. Font weights and colors were chosen deliberately to create hierarchy within the text.

A basic logo design for a fictionalcat video website.

Professor Cory Kerr, COMM130 Section 2Adobe Illustrator

Use only Adobe Illustrator tools to create logos.

    Present variations of same logo.

Refine logo designs to best choice.

This project began with several sketches before moving into Adobe Illustrator. I digitized the three best sketch ideas, then asked classmates, roommates, and acquaintances for feedback. The most popular choice was refined further, and was created using only basic shapes, the pen tool, and the shape builder tool.

Learn to use only Word design features.

I did three initial sketches, then iterated over two of them to produce this final result. The photograph was scanned from a magazine and adjusted to fit the page. The text was placed around the woman running to emphasize her placement inthe composition. Microsoft Word was used to create the original draft. For this portfolio, I recreated it using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign.

A web page design demonstratingbasic CSS & HTML mastery.

Professor Cory Kerr, COMM130 Section 2Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Indesign, Adobe Photoshop

Learn basic photography skills and non-destructive editing.

Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance; use sharpen tool.

Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

I took the photograph used in this design myself, framing the subject so that there would be enough lead room on the right to squeeze my content in. I touched it up in Adobe Photoshop, using levels and color balance adjustment layers to bring out the best in the background. The shapes were all created in Adobe Illustrator and the text was added in Adobe InDesign. The use of the price tag was a deliberate choice to push the message of a sale.
