In July 2007 Outdoor StructuresAustralia (OSA) started work on themost impressive public works projectit has ever undertaken, the bridges atSouth West 1 Enterprise Park(Berrinba Wetlands). NeumannContractors engaged OSA initially tosupply and install a series of longspan bikeway bridges capable oftaking emergency vehicles. Thesebridges were further complicated byrequiring a flood load of 3 m/s andneeding sophisticated foundations.Handrails on all bridges subject toinundation had to be frangible.
OSA has delivered these highperformance bridges on budget andon time and very importantly, to theextreme satisfaction of all thestakeholders.
As the project progressed, OSA’sinvolvement in the South West 1Enterprise Park increased. We wereultimately called on to supply a widerange of our products. The success ofthis project is in no small way linkedto the high quality of the OSAproducts used.

The project reached practical completionin June 2008.
The bridges of Berrinba Wetlands werecompleted despite very difficult siteconditions. The return of a rainy seasonafter years of drought made theconstruction of the foundations difficult.Site access was also limited. As well therewere very demanding and complexenvironmental requirements imposed onthe site.

South West 1 is a world class 120 hectare integrated environmental,recreational and enterprise precinct. Once completed, South West1 is expected to create up to 2000 jobs. It will provide a significantvariety of recreational and environmental spaces for business usersand local residents alike.
A key feature of the development is a series of water bodies thatwere formed from about 1970 to 1990 from local sand miningactivity. These lagoons have stunning visual appeal and havedeveloped into a natural haven for fauna and bird life sincecommercial mining activity ceased in the area.
Over $12 million has been allocated from the project for thecreation of the adjoining 80-hectare Berrinba Wetlands Park and when completed will becomea major recreational and environmental asset to the City of Logan and its residents. There is alarge scale re-vegetation and restoration component and a broad range of public use facilitieshave been incorporated into the design including a network of walking and bike tracks,information facilities and family picnic spots. This central public area is located near thewetlands lagoons and will offer a safe, peaceful outlook with full facilities for daytimeenjoyment.
A broad range of visitors will have access to the parkland facilities, which include a high techinformation centre providing interactive and static displays showcasing the cultural heritageand ecological assets of the area. Groups will be encouraged to use the resource foreducational purposes and menu-driven displays will be readily upgradeable and changeable tomaximise interest levels. The Information Centre is vandal resistant, having advanced securitysystems as an integral feature.
More than 6 km of walking and bike tracks are being incorporated into the parkland design.These tracks are wide concrete pathways, many suitable for disability access, and have beendesigned to work with and highlight the natural features of the area.A number of low bridges also capable of carrying maintenance and emergency vehicles is alsoincluded.
Safe, modern, low maintenance picnic and playground structures are another feature of thedesign. The landscape architects have gone to considerable length to optimise the layout ofthe public facilities and to create useful, functional spaces in safe, pleasant surroundings forthe enjoyment of all ages.

24 metre span (spliced) bikeway bridge designed for a 2.5 tonne emergency vehicle, one of 4 bridgesof similar style. Other spans were 12 + 18 m. Designed for flood loading.
72 metre span cable stayed bridge, 26 metre centrespan designed for a 2.5 tonne emergency vehicle.This structure is supported by 32 cables.
