Consistency with attendance is key and along with practice will ensure success

Lessons are 30 minutes each week.  Beginning students should plan to practice on their own for 10 to 15 minutes a day or 20 to 30 minutes every other day.  Intermediate students should commit to 20 to 30 minutes of independent practice per day. into a little more detail about your company.

Appropriate materials for each student will be recommended after the first lesson.

Materials needed for a new piano student include a method book, technique book, repertoire book and a manuscript book.  Students who have studied previously may bring the materials they used with their previous instructor to the first lesson.  If necessary, different or additional materials will be selected for study. Materials can be purchased online or at your nearest music store.  Parents or students are responsible for the cost of materials.  The initial cost is $25 to $30.

Performance

Recitals and WorkshopsWe plan a Christmas recital for early December.  This provides students the opportunity to showcase their skills playing holiday selections.  Student workshops are held in the summer.  Students will have the opportunity to play for other students and participate in a an interactive session where a musical topic is explored.Encourage your child to participate in recitals and workshops.

Playing for OthersStudents are encouraged to play for any type of audience whenever the opportunity arises.  Playing for church, school and for family are some good examples.

A variety of tools and techniques are used to teach students the foundational elements of music.

Using a traditional approach, students learn to read music and build skills in music theory, fingering technique, artistry, line, sound and movement.  Note reading and ear training are essential.

Teaching PhilosophyThe value of studying music is multi-faceted. Research shows that participation in music stimulates all parts of the brain simultaneously and strengthens other academic areas including reading, mathematics, and language.  Students also gain life-skills from studying music such as self-confidence, organization and creativity.

Are Keyboards ok?Electronic keyboards will work for a beginning student for about one year.  As students advance, pedaling, touch, phrasing and musical expression become very different on a keyboard than on an acoustic piano.

If you decide to go with a keyboard, choose one that has full size keys, and at least five octaves.  Casio or Yamaha have touch sensitivity and the option for a sustain pedal.  For proper posture and hand position, you will need to purchase an adjustable music stand and bench.
