It never gets old, does it? LET IT SNOW! I know it is only October, but one can hope. Yes, it is now October (though I write in September) and that means…we have had 3 Alpine Trips open already (9/18/13)! That surely means our season has begun, even if it hasn’t yet snowed. I hope you all had a chance to read up on sign up procedures in advance. It is always best to show up prepared. We showcased this years Trips for all to see on September 18th as well. Do not worry if you could not ask your questions, the information is on the Website and then there is always the next meeting, or simply email the leader via the Trip email. If you didn’t get on one of the trips on the 18th, there are more to come, so there truly is something available for everyone, it may just be a 2nd choice due to the limited number of spots we can offer. While your heart gets set on one resort, there is much fun to be had at another, or, worst case, get on a waitlist and be prepared to jump on the trip last minute - it happens all the time. I will say it again and again, get used to it - “No matter where the OC Ski Club travels and no matter what the conditions are on the hill, with the right attitude, you will never have a bad time on an OC Trip”.

The PEOPLE make it fun, not the trip itself - yes, just my opinion, but in just shy of 20 years, with every type of ski condition possible, I have never had a bad time on an OC Trip - or even a day bus for that matter. We always find a way to entertain ourselves - sometimes we entertain others too, and sometimes it is even on purpose.

The Bus schedule should be up and ready now too (I was promised). Please read those procedures on the Website too. Again, being prepared saves everyone from missing out! Knowing where to meet the bus, what time it leaves, what to bring/not to bring, how much CA$H and what kind of gear (jello shots, beer, snacks, shrimp, a warm coat, gloves, helmet, goggles etc you know, - the important stuff) to have with you etc… will save time and maybe frustration too. Asking another person may or may not be the best idea, unless that person is on the Committee or is the Bus Leader etc…

Instructors, Racers, Bus Leaders and one interested in becoming an Instructor or Racer or Bus Leader, keep your eyes peeled on the Web and emails etc. Information will be there about meetings, Clinics, Races, and so on. Also considered a Please also note that as an OC Member/

Applicant, you are a Member of the NY Capital District Ski Council (NYCDSC) and qualify to participate in Council Events, Council Days and Council Trips. Everyone, watch for info regarding the Applicant Party, The Ski and Snowboard Expo and Warren Miller Movies, all in November. Hopefully our first Bus will roll by Thanksgiving or so. Start the snow dancing, praying to the snow gods, whatever it takes because, if the Almanac is right and we have an extremely cold winter, what better way to warm up than Schussing down a hill somewhere with your “Out of Control” friends? Should you have any questions, please check the Website and if the info in not there, send an email to the Committee, Event/Bus/Trip Leader or the VP that oversees the thing you need info on. Meetings get busy and the din can be deafening, so an email can more often generate a better, and more complete reply. See you every Thursday!

Hampton Comes Alive

Hello All,I hope that your September was filled

with fun. I know that mine was! It started out with a day at the track and a day at Lake George with my aunt, who was here visiting from California. We had a nice time.

The next weekend brought me to Hampton Beach with two buses filled with OCer’s looking for some seafood and salt water induced fun. It had to have been 80 degrees when we arrived. The water brought relief from the heat. It felt great! After the swim, it was time to indulge in some fruits of the sea. I enjoyed several of them, as did everyone else on the trip. I cannot thank Chantal Couture enough for all of the hard work she put in to run this trip and all of the other fun things she ar-ranges for us to do. Cheers to you Chantal! Thank you to everyone else who helped out on the trip as well(Frank!).

Speaking of events, please put your imaginations in high gear to think of a costume for our annual Halloween party, which will be held at the PCC on Hallow-een! It is always fun to see what people dress up as. It starts the party season off right! It will be a two party weekend, because the Snow Show is November 1-3, with our after show party on November 2. Please see Bobby D. if you would like to volunteer to help out at the show.

It is hard to believe that it is fall! Keep your eyes on the Website for any last min-ute events that we may come up with or specifics on ones already planned. See you out and about.

A common thread in the O.C.Ski Club is that we all share that passion for Skiing and Snowboarding. One of the benefits of skiing with the club is the professional quality instruction from the O.C Ski Club Snowsports School at no charge. Yes,I did say free, all you need to do is sign up for the lesson at a Thursday meeting or on the Sunday Bus. We have always offered lessons on Sunday trips, this season we are working on offering more instruction on weekday trips, pending the availability of instructors. As in the past,we will be offering more than one Private Lesson day in the January-February time frame, exact dates to be announced. You pick your favorite instructor, sign up list for private lessons will be available at the Snowsports School table weeks prior to the dates. We are a PSIA certified Snowsports School, approximately 70% of our instructors have attained a level of PSIA certification. Any Questions? Stop by our table at a meeting or see us at the Snow Expo.

I just love it when a plan falls together. Great weather, a fantastic turnout (52 players), free beer and great food made for one awesome OC event. I’ll keep this article short as we need space for ski stuff. From all the whistling, you had to be there to understand, I believe all players had a great day. The award winners for the day are:Men’s longest drive – Dan Card, Ladies longest drive – Peg Nelson, Men’s closest to the Pin – Charlie Schoonmaker & Jeff Kenton, Ladies closest to the pin – Caroline Nickerson & Peg Nelson. They all received some nice party hats!Team prize: First Place – Team Brian Ward, Second place – Team Josh Pensabene. What great looking trophies.

Now I’ll leave it up to Hank to let others know about the “Junk & Thumbs up” FUNNY thing for the day award. Maybe the happiest golfer was Debbie Paniccia who won the $118 50/50 raffle. Lots of other raffle winner who got golf balls and other precious gifts.

Thanks to all who attended.

hAmPton BeAch seAFood FestiVAl recAPHAMPTON BEACH, NH Saturday September 7, 2013Michele Moffit, OC Applicant

So for those of you that want to know the story......

Yesterday, I took the party bus with the OC Ski Club to the Seafood Festival in Hampton Beach, NH. This was my first event with the group and it was a blast! Upon arrival after our 4 hour journey, we all ran for the beach to set up for a day of fun and festivities OC-style. After a few lobsters, couple dozen steamers and then some very cold water “beach time”, a new OC friend and I decided to head down the Boardwalk. As we passed one of the food booths, a guy was holding a paper plate sign marked “Help Wanted”. I made a comment to him and he explained they were new to the festival, he hadn’t brought enough help and were overwhelmed. We kept walking and I thought to myself “poor guy, probably not the right demographic to find help today... these people were all there to eat and party, not work.” On the way back he still had the sign and now it read “Help Wanted $15/hour”. Curiously and half jokingly, I asked what the job entailed... making subs and rotating his current help to get a much needed lunch break (by now it was already 3:30) before they got really slammed for dinner. Never expecting he would say yes, I said “I’ll help out” and before I knew it, into the booth I went, washed my hands, donned gloves and an apron and set off to work hawking Philly Cheesesteaks and bread bowl “Chowda!” Within minutes I was taking orders, making change (much to the dismay of a seasoned

employee that explained she had been with him for two years and was yet allowed to touch the cash box!) and when the chef went on his break, I flipped burgers and loaded buns with Cheesesteaks!

After two hours I said to the owner, “AJ, I really need to go.” “Please can’t you stay?” he asked. “Sorry,” I said, “but I need to get back and meet my friends before the fireworks and the bus back to Albany.” He was shocked... “you don’t live around here? you weren’t looking for work?”, he asked. “No, I’m just on a day trip” I explained. He laughed hysterically, as did the guy in the adjacent seafood paella booth. After lots of “can I take your picture? This is too funny”, he went to pay me and I said “Keep it, I didn’t do it for the money. I am glad everyone got a break...... but, would it be possible to keep the apron to help substantiate my story?” He said “I am paying you, you did an honest two hours hard work, you also get your choice for dinner and yes, please keep the apron”

So, what started out as kind of a joke turned into $30, an outrageously delicious Philly Cheesesteak, “loaded” (which I have learned means onions, peppers and mushrooms), an apron and a great story about helping a small business in their time of need. Yes, AJ made a few phone calls and was able to find someone to help out on Sunday. And for those that know me best, “free” money always means pay it forward- so the $30 will go to charity!

I proudly wore my apron the rest of the day (including the bus ride back to Albany) and told my story. Some of the group had walked by while I was “working” and quizzically mouthed “what ARE you doing????” Later, upon telling them, the comments ranged from “you’re nuts! to wow, awesome story” One guy said “so glad we got to meet you... you live life large don’t you?” My only correction to that would be, extra large please!

And how was YOUR day?
