OC Board Meeting Highlights

August 2, 2018

Meeting Highlights:

The Board Meeting was held on Thursday, August 2. Here is a summary of what took place. Complete minutes are found on the website.

• Upcoming events and contracted trips were discussed. You can find this information elsewhere in this Liftline or on the website.

• Discussed procedures for handling conduct incidents. (Note: The Club’s Code of Conduct and Incident Reporting procedures can be found on the website)

• Discussed the application of Roberts Rules to the running of Board Meetings.

Next meeting is September 6th. Members are welcome to attend the meeting.

August 13th was the last night of summer bowling and it was full of fun. We have the normal beginning challenge. This month 1 member of each team had to throw the bowling ball down the lane with the bumpers up. The winner was the one who got the most pins – but if you did not hit the bumper, you were disqualified. Again, if you threw a strike when the head pin was colored, you got to spin the wheel for a prize. There were prizes for scores that were the highest

Summer Bowling was a BLASTgame and highest triple and closest to a magic number. What was different this month is the voted favorite bowler – male and female. Meghan Ruby won the trophy for favorite female and Jamie “DUKE” Duchessi won favorite male. And for all bowlers that were present and had bowled at least twice, there was the grand drawing. Matt Quackenbush won the new bowling ball and bag. Thanks for Uncle Sam’s Lanes for all the giveaways and hosting another fun summer of bowling.

Hello everyone – Can’t seem to get rid of me. I am currently the Marketing Director for the OC Ski Club. We are in the process of increasing the promotion of this great ski club in order to increase membership. The easiest way is for you, a current member or applicant, to get the WORD out. Did you know you could get a FREE membership next year for doing this? Contact me or see details as I post them to the OC website.

Item two for now is that I am looking

for a few experienced persons, 2 plus yrs. in the Club, to help out the Ambassadors at the weekly PCC meetings. I do not need you every week, but if you could help out once every third week? All that is required is for you to be available to walk a new applicant or someone interested in the Club around the meeting, so they can find out what is going on. 10 – 15 minutes of your time will greatly increase the experience for this person who we want to get excited about the OC’s

The last weeklong ski trip last season was to Sun Peaks in British Columbia. The last week of March seems to be a difficult week for trips. You never know what kind of snow you are going to get. Eight people signed up for Sun Peaks and due to great negotiating by Gail Marotti-Hossan, we were able to keep our group rates. Six OCers (2 had last minute health issues) flew into the town of Kamloops to no snow. But as I driver told us, there was snow an hour away in Sun Peaks. Not just a little snow, piles of snow. We spent a week in a charming village with snow covered roads and more than a foot of snow on the roofs. But the best part was the mountains. Every level of skiing including cross country was at our doorstep. The food

Remembering the Snow and ready for more! • Sun Peaks in British Columbiawas good, the company was great, and the mountains were fantastic.

Four of us skied the “Laundromat” which includes some really challenging slopes all named for cleaning clothes?? At the top of “Static Cling”, I stopped and exclaimed, “Holy S***”. This was steeper and narrower than Sunday River’s White Heat, but I was not walking back up hill. We all had another great ski story after that.

Would I go back? In a heartbeat. Remembering this fun, I am thrilled to see all the trips for 2018/2019 season. Can’t wait to go skiing.

The Trips Chart has been updated but you will see that there are still some holes … we’re working on filling in that information but in the meantime….

1. We are reducing the deposits and payments for our trips this year and increasing the number of payments to help you spread it out. Hopefully, this will allow you to sign up for more trips!!!

2. A note on Family Friendly trips: for those trips that will allow you to bring your children along with a driving option this does NOT mean that the children are coming for free unless the policy of the hotel allows for children to stay/ski for free. Whatever the policy you must still register the child(ren) as a member of the trip for our insurance policy.

3. Club Policy (see Website for current policies and procedures) is that no one comes on our trips without registering and paying for their

“Space”. It might sound like a great idea to let that friend who drove up for the day to sleep in your room but this is not fair to those others (or even you) who have paid to be part of the trip. Sorry to say that this is a Zero Tolerance item!!!

4. Our trips have many options to try and make each one affordable and available to anyone who wishes to go. You will note that NH, Big Sky, and Sunday River are tightly booked... it was the only way to get space at Big Sky this year and so many indicated that this is where they wanted to go. Don’t let it stop you – we are going to be ever so flexible to accommodate those who want to combine.

5. We still do not take credit cards to pay for our trips BUT if you really need to do so we can invoice you for the payment; however, you will pay the PayPal fee of ~3%.

6. Presidents Week: I am going to announce this soon and will be asking those who are interested to give me a $100 deposit check. I need 10 people to obtain a group rate and 26 people to obtain a comp (30 from Southwest Air) which reduces the cost to everyone on the trip. The trip will be either Jackson Hole or a Denver area resort and will be in the $1500.00 range.

7. We have many friends who may not be Alpine Skiers or who may have a pass – ALL of our trips have a no lift ticket price – just ask. Our resorts have many other things to do while friends are out on the slopes. Just ask

Final thing: there is so much information to share and limited space – so if you see a Trip of interest but there is something missing from the description to meet your needs – ASK THE QUESTION!!!!

Killington High Peak: Climb the Beast Before the Snow Flies

Saturday, September 22 (Rain Date: 9/23)

Meet at the Exit 12 Park ‘n Ride, 7:30 am.

This is a 7.4 mile, round trip, moderate hike with an elevation gain of 2174 feet.

Hiking time: Approximately 5 hours at a relaxed pace with additional time for snack, lunch, and exploring the summit. There should be at least some leaf color change in the high peaks at this point.

Email Peggy at [email protected] to sign up or with questions; Limited to 15 hikers to comply with DEC group regulations. If there’s enough interest, we’ll try and get a second group together.

Bring 2-3 liters of water, lunch/snacks or buy lunch at the Peak Lodge, bug spray

For those interested we’ll stop for dinner.

Attention Non-Hikers: Enjoy some of the fun Killington summer/fall activities at the base then take the gondola to the summit and meet us for lunch. A complete list of activities will be added as soon as it’s available.

Description:

Mount Killington is the second tallest mountain in the Green Mountains of Vermont at 4,235 feet. The Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail both cross the summit of Mount Killington. If you are traveling south on the Appalachian Trail, you won’t reach another 4,000 footer until Virginia. The hike passes by the Cooper Lodge, a bunkhouse for hikers. You begin at the Brewer’s Corner Parking lot located in Mendon, New Vermont on Wheelerville Road. Take the Bucklin Trail up for 3.3 miles. The first 2 miles are mostly flat with low inclines. Once you reach a junction with the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail, you will want to stay right and hike for 0.2 more miles where you will see the Cooper Lodge. From there, the summit of Mount Killington is just another 0.2 miles up. This last part is really steep and requires rock scrambles. Once you enjoy the views on the summit, retrace your steps the way you came up to get back to the Brewer’s Corner parking lot.

ORGANIZED SKIING

Matt Quackenbush

Vice President for Organized Skiing

AS THE SKI CARVESIt’s late August and I’ve had a great

summer. That being said, I am thinking more and more about the upcoming Ski season.

There is a lot going on with planning for next winter. Trips are being finalized and the Bus schedule is being set. If you get chance, say thanks to Gail Marotti-Hossan and Linda Heaney, Mark Wilder and Sylvia Haefeli for all their efforts over the off season getting things ready for the snow.

What’s new in trips? Davos, Switzerland is new with a side trip to Zurich.

Also new this year is “Lessons and Luxury” at a new luxurious location - Mt. Snow. We’ll be starting the season right with Mt. Snow’s great new snow making (new last year). Believe me, they know how to make snow.

Personally, I am looking forward to an old standby, but new to me, Big Sky, Montana, I can’t wait.

Locally new this year will be Hunter Mountains new trails, an entire new side of the mountain will open with a new lift. This will be a great addition to the acreage at Hunter. I also hear Magic Mt. has a new lift and increased snow-making.

I got a brief preview from Lynda Heaney about lift ticket rates and I am definitely hearing good things. Let’s roll a lot of buses this year.

Tell your friends and get them to join us on the mountain. Spread the word.
