Prayer for Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney
O God, shepherd and ruler of all the faithful,
look favorably on your servant, Kevin, whom you have set at the head of your Church of Paterson as her shepherd;
grant, we pray, that by word and example he may be of service to those over whom he presides, so that, together with the flock entrusted to his care,
he may come to everlasting life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened”
In this Sunday’s gospel reading from Saint Matthew we hear proclaimed some of the most reassuring words Jesus speaks to us: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The Lord gives us the promise of his consolation even as he tells us that the demands of our faith will involve challenges that we need to meet. In the midst of the good and bad, joys and sorrows, the Lord is always close to us. Jesus invites us to a personal friendship with him and promises us that he himself is the Wisdom that gives us the knowledge and grace to navigate the difficulties of this life.
As we continue to gradually make our way forward while remaining mindful of the care we must take in our interactions as a community of faith and in our places of work, we can feel like the burdens of life are increasing more and more. The time and effort that it takes to maintain social distancing and to make sure that we are attentive to keeping commonly used surfaces sanitized can be a little sacrifice that we make out of concern for the good of others. The Lord knows the efforts and sacrifices that we make for others and he blesses those efforts and returns them to us as even deeper grace and strength.
Life can be filled with anxiety and disappointment. At certain moments the joy of faith can be clouded by the experience of uncertainty and doubt. In the gospel this week, the Lord Jesus promises us that he is the master teacher who gives us the instruction that we require in order to safely navigate the sometimes treacherous terrain that we must walk. People can disappoint us and we can be surprised and hurt by disloyalty and betrayal. And yet we are still required to forgive the shortcomings of others knowing that we ourselves are imperfect and are in need to God’s mercy. In the midst of the pandemic, we have learned how much good can be done and how much lighter our own burdens can become when we help others to bear their own burdens and cares rather than being concerned with our own problems alone.
The Lord assures us that he will give us the rest that we can only find in his heart but at the same time he is very clear in telling us that our faith in him does make heavy demands: “my yoke is easy, and my burden light” (Matthew 11:30). There is always a burden to be carried and following the Lord is a yoke that summons us to loving service. The Lord has invited us into the same relationship that he shares with his Father through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our faith in the Lord will never disappoint us even when others do. The demand of faith is that we live with the joy that our closeness to the Lord demands. He never abandons us and our challenge is not to give up our hope in his promise even when times are difficult.
Now the July 4th holiday, celebrating the anniversary of our nation’s independence has passed we will find that the summer will fly by. Summer is a beautiful season and it always seems to be the one that passes most quickly. We can use these days to seek to find a few moments of rest to reflect upon our relationship with the Lord and to give gratitude to God for the things that are going right in our lives. In times of hardship we can daily return to making a litany of what and who have disappointed us. That is a waste of the beauty of summer and the joy that we can be grateful for in this life. The Lord is always close to us.
Saint Paul encourages us in our second reading this week: “Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you” (Romans 8:9). God’s own life dwells in our hearts; God is closer to us than we are to ourselves because God himself is the source of our life. In our first reading we hear the voice of one who spoke long ago, the prophet Zechariah encouraged the people of Israel in the midst of their discouragement: “Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king will come to you” (Zechariah 9:9). Those who seek to do the will of God

will know the joy of his guidance and the consolation of love. That is an encouraging thought for summer! Life will, with the passing of each summer day, please God, become filled with more hope and anxiety will be dispelled more and more. Let us take a moment each day to pray for one another and to encourage one another.
Congratulations to the Newly Confirmed
Congratulations to the young people who are gradually being confirmed each week at Sunday Mass. It is such an encouragement and joy to pray with them and to celebrate the Eucharist with them as they receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Thanks to parents and sponsors for bringing them to this day. Thanks to Trish Filiaci for doing so much to coordinate our faith formation program and to accompany our young people on their journey of faith.
Happy Birthday America! The 244th Anniversary of our Independence
1776 July 4 2020
On July 1, 1776, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail on the significance of the Declaration of Independence:
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
John Adams, instrumental in the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, was off by two days in identifying the date that would be commemorated as one of the most important days in the history of our nation but he was prescient, nonetheless. Two hundred and forty-four years later we celebrate our nation’s independence and give thanks to Almighty God for the blessing of our freedom and liberty.
We honor the memory of all of those who have died in the service of our nation, protecting our freedom. We ask that God’s wisdom will guide our President, Congress, and all leaders so that we continue to live according to the principles of freedom and liberty.
We honor our country and take pride in our country’s freedom and accomplishments. We pray that we continue to grow in our appreciation for our gift of freedom, liberty, and that we make good use of our God given rights to honor his law, first and foremost, and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to make sure that our freedom is maintained. We thank God for the gift of our country and we pray for the gift to be instruments of peace in our country so that our common gratitude for the gift of God’s freedom will help us to grow in respect for one another.
Gradually Opening and Reduction in Staff Hours
Thank you for your patience with the gradual return to normal parish life. Public Daily Mass is celebrated again in church at 7:00 and 11:45 AM. We have reduced office hours (10:00-2:00 PM) and closed

the office permanently on Fridays as a cost saving measure, while remaining open on Sunday between 9:00-1:00. After more than three months of being on lock down or only partially opened now, I have begun, in consultation with the Diocese of Paterson, to make reductions in full time staff and to save everywhere that we can.
Most parishes are taking similar measures. The process of reduction in full time staff, is effecting many on our parish staff, began in January when I asked Bishop Serratelli not to send another priest to serve at our parish. Thankfully, we have been able to keep everyone in their position even if it has meant reducing compensation and hours. Having gone from three full time priests, very recently, to then two, to a pastor alone is a sacrifice for you but I hope that you understand that these measures are being taken with the long-term view of the future. Our staff is wonderful and they all serve faithfully and well. While there is a reduction in hours and full time status, all of their work is invaluable and much appreciated by all of us. The recent changes which have been implemented regrettably have trimmed seventy-thousand dollars from next year’s budget – just about what we are in the red now.
One diocesan official told me that his surmise is that we will not have a return to normal church attendance for twenty-four months. Additionally, I was informed that permission for a choir will not even be considered until Christmas, if then. Thus, change, even if unwanted, is inevitable. These are not happy decisions but they are necessary.
We have weathered the storm, for the most part. More challenges are ahead. I am very grateful for all of your support. As of this writing we are about $112,000.00 in the red for the year. There is no way to make up that deficit at this point. However, we will move forward, step by step, maintain our celebration of our faith in Word and Sacrament which is the heart of our parish.
I am confident about the future but we cannot keep functioning as we did when our weekly offering was $11,000 a week and diocesan bills were sometimes deferred into heavy debt. This too shall pass. I am certain about the bright future of our parish but I know that the proactive measures that are being taken are necessary. You have always been generous in your prayer and support. Most of all, now, I ask for those prayers to guide us and strengthen us through the Wisdom of the Holy Spirit.
We have Re-Opened!
Thank you for your patience in waiting for this day. We are open, at this writing, on a limited basis. But we are making progress! Please keep checking back to the website in order to follow the updates in regard to the occupancy that is permitted at Sunday Mass. Please e-mail the parish office, or call, Monday-Thursday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, to reserve a place at Sunday Mass. Daily Mass began on Monday, June 15, 2020 at 7:00 AM and 11:45 AM. All Masses will be celebrated in church and the chapel will not be used at this time.
Of Special Note in Regard to Reopening
Please note that a face mask is required for all of those two years of age and older. Those who are between 60-65 years of age, who have underlying medical conditions, are discouraged from attending Mass at this time just for the time-being. Please also bring a small bottle of hand sanitizer to use before receiving Holy Communion. Additionally, only the central set of doors will be open at the front of the church and the elevator for those who require its use. The restrooms will only be available upon request. Please note that

dispensation to attend Sunday Mass remains in effect for now. You may continue to join us through live-streaming on Facebook.
It seems that livestream of Mass is here to stay. We need to hardwire the church and find another platform other than Facebook, such as Vimeo or E-Catholic in order to broadcast on a stable basis. The cost of this upgrade is about eight-thousand dollars ($8,000.00). If anyone would like to contribute toward this goal please contact Mrs. Beverly Cuccinelli at the office or at [email protected] for more information.
Thank you!
Thank you for your generosity to our parish which never fails to humble me. I am overwhelmed by the number of people who have donated the cost of their Tricky Tray Tickets to our parish. That is a great help to our parish family. Thank you and know of my prayers for you! Please note there are instructions on page 10 for those still holding tickets who wish to have the cost returned. Please note that the policy will be closely adhered to for the sake of order and the safety of the parish office staff.
Sincerely in Christ,
Monsignor T. Mark Condon Pastor
Online Giving Will Help Sustain Our Church
Meeting your giving goal will help support our church’s many ministries dedicated to strengthening our church’s community and community at large.
Online Giving allows you to make donations, payments and pledges via your smart device or computer to our church. Search the App Stores for Online Giving or go to www.OLGapp.com and register with our parish.
Set up your gift today or consider an additional gift via our website on your smart device. Visit www.holyangelsrc.org and click on the “Donate” tab to make a one-time or recurring donation.
For parishioners who want to avoid credit card and bank transaction fees, we strongly encourage the free bank bill-payment services that many local banks offer. For example, both Bank of America and Chase offer Bill Pay services that allow the account owner to set up a weekly automatic payment via check in a set amount to the parish. This paper check is then mailed by the bank to the parish on the date the account holder sets. This works very well and is easy for most parishioners to set up and use.
