    Dear Family,

    “Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;

in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.”

I hope this finds you well and that Lent is off to a good start. Many of us do our best to make a good start to this Holy

Season by taking inventory of our lives, coming up with a plan of action, and usually making a good confession. It’s

not a bad way to begin the season of spiritual Spring cleaning. But, as always happens, eventually we fail at it. We

forget, forego, or begin to resent the penance we have chosen for our renewal. Frustration from failure leads to anxiety

and sadness, which eventually wane, leading us to feeling despondent and sadness and makes us assume that this Lent

is a total failure. But we could not be any more wrong! I remember a wise priest once telling me that, “even our sins

can lead us closer to God.” I used to think, “what in the world is he talking about?” “Isn’t sin supposed to be avoided,

isn’t it the problem?!” In the Psalm we hear at Mass today, Psalm 51, the psalmist is lamenting his sin. He could not

be more honest about the gravity and detrimental effects of his transgression, but instead of leading him to despair, he

surprisingly grows more confident in God’s mercy and goodness. He is brutally aware of his own brokenness, but

consistently assured of God’s ability to heal and console. Friends, if your Lent does not go according to plan, then this

too, when offered to God, can be the opportunity to make an even deeper and more successful Lent, because your sins

and failings can lead you closer to God.

    “Called to Communion”

For many of us the Sacraments are rites of passage in our

families and communities. But did you know that these

sacred moments are so much more? If we learn more

about the Sacraments we see how meaningful they are,

we understand the intention behind each symbol, word,

and gesture. But if we immerse our mind and heart into

them, then we encounter the living God and leave healed,

strengthened, and wholly transformed! Come join us as

we journey together this Lent in rediscovering the Sacra-

ments and their effects on our relationships and overall

lives. God is calling you to a deeper communion, will

    you answer the call?
