Like a baby's mobile, it helps us focus and get interested in Jesus

Like a rocking chair, its repetitive prayer helps us relax

Like being held in our Mother's arms, we hear her heartbeat, totally in sync with Jesus’ heartbeat, through the repetitive prayer

It is shaped like David's slingshot, and it helps us combat evil like David combated Goliath

Cross by the heart = Christ crucified; the suffering of a mother when her child suffers

Manos Juntas = gesto de ofrendaRodilla Doblada y la Costura de la tilma hacen la forma de una espada. “Una espada traspasará tu corazón” (Lucas 2:35) indica el dolor que ella sentiría cuando Jesús fuera crucificado

The rose-colored tunic = the color of water becoming wine

The Proclamation of the Kingdom

Angel with Arms Up = gesture of rejoicing for God's KingdomAngel's Hairline & Face, plus Holding Mary up = to enter heaven, we must be wise, childlike and serve others

Four-petal Flower = Jesus as center of the cosmos (all creatures subordinate to Him)

Mary's Bent Head = she is not a god (yet she holds the incarnate God within her)Mary's Praying Hands = prayer is the key to heaven

Ángel con Brazos Elevados = gesto de gozo por el Reino de DiosCabello y Cara del Ángel, además Cargando a María = para entrar al cielo, debemos practicar buen juicio, ser inocentes y servir a nuestro prójimo

Magnified Image of her Eye’s Pupil Reflects Family Unity = the family is the apple of her eye; our unity is the Body of Christ

Mary's foot & the folds of her tunic are shaped like hand blessing breadFour-petal Flower: the center looks like a host, the petals like a cross; the Eucharist is a sacrifice

The four-petal flower is under Mary's belt, indicating that the center of the cosmos is in her womb; in receiving Communion, we too carry the center of the cosmos

Magnolias = son lozanas, tienen forma de corazónLos Aztecas hicieron una enorme cantidad de sacrificiosMaría, una mujer embarazada portando magnolias = su hijo será el ultimo sacrificioLa túnica de magnolias de la Virgen es un mapa de los cerros rodeando el área donde ella apareció. Las nueve magnolias están ubicadas en las mismas posiciones relativas que los nueve cerros rodeando el cerro Tepeyac. La flor de cuatro pétalos, representando el centro de los cosmos, Jesús, se ubica justo sobre el cerro Tepeyac.

Magnolias = lush, shaped like heartsThe Aztecs made an enormous amount of sacrificesMary, a pregnant woman wearing magnolias = her son will be the last sacrificeMary's tunic of magnolias is a map of the hills surrounding the area where she appeared. The nine magnolias are located in the same positions as the nine hills surrounding Tepeyac Hill. The four-petal flower, representing the center of the cosmos, Jesus, is the location of Tepayac Hill.

Broach keeping Mary's tunic of flowers closed = Mary as an enclosed garden

Dragon/Snake/Scorpion Constellations on Mary's mantle = evil; Jesus was tempted in the garden

Black (burned out) Moon = Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent Aztec god, a false god

Mary's foot crushes out the serpent (black moon)

Prendedor que mantiene la túnica floral de María cerrada = María como un jardín encerrado

Constelaciones de Dragón/Serpiente/Escorpión en el manto de María = el mal; Jesús fue tentado en el jardín

Luna Negra = Quetzalcoatl, el dios Azteca en forma de serpiente emplumada, un dios falso

The Scourging

John 19:1

When Jesus was whipped, the sweat burned & pained his wounds & eyes.Nitric acid spill of 1791: the acid is very caustic & burns, reminding us of Jesus' pain. At first, it appeared to do a lot of damage to the tilma, but as time progressed, the image seemed to “heal,” & now only a stain remains on the top right corner.

Cuando Jesús fue flagelado, el sudor le ardió y le causó dolor en las heridas y ojos.Derrame de ácido nítrico en 1791: el ácido es muy cáustico y quema, recordándonos del dolor que sufrió Jesús. De primero, pareció que le causó mucho daño a la tilma, pero con el tiempo, la imagen “sanó,” y hoy solo queda una mancha en la esquina derecha de arriba.

Crowning with Thorns

Matthew 27:28-29

Mary's bowed head & closed mouth = like Jesus during the crowning, submissive & humble, “like a lamb led to the slaughter” (Isaiah 53:7)

Angel appears to wear the pointy moon as a false crown = Jesus' thorny crown was a false crown, too

La cabeza inclinada y boca cerrada de María = como Jesús durante la coronación, sumiso y humilde, “como cordero que es llevado al matadero” (Isaías 53:7)

Ángel parece llevar la luna puntada como corona postiza = la corona espinosa de Jesús fue una corona falsa también

Carrying of the Cross

John 19:17

Cross in Broach = the cross Jesus carried; the symbol the Spanish conquerors carried on their helmets & flags; Mary is conqueror of our hearts

Southern Cross Constellation in approx. region of Mary's womb = Jesus carrying the cross

Tilma is almost 480 years old = it endures just as Jesus endured while carrying the cross; we pray for endurance

Cruz en el Prendedor = la cruz que Jesús cargó; el símbolo que los conquistadores Españoles portaban en sus cascos y banderas; María conquista nuestros corazones

Constelación Cruz del Sur cerca del vientre de María = Jesús cargando la cruz

Tilma tiene casi 480 años = es resistente tal como Jesús lo fue durante su camino con la cruz; nosotros oramos por fortaleza

The Crucifixion

By Mary's bent knee, Jesus appears buried in the tomb.Explosion of 1921 in Basilica: everything around the bomb was damaged, except for Mary's image. A crucifix nearby was bent by the bomb: Jesus on the Crucifix, bent backwards, seemingly in a gesture of defending his mother. Jesus’ on the cross defends us.

Revelation 12:1 speaks of a woman clothed with the sun, moon under feet, & a crown of stars = the Corona Borealis Constellation is around her head & the sun appears to radiate from her, with moon under feet

Gold borders on her mantle, jade color of mantle & fur cuffs & neckline = royalty

María cargada en los hombros del ángel = por costumbre Azteca, ella es una dignatariaRevelación 12:1 menciona una mujer luciendo el sol, luna bajo pie, y una corona de estrellas = la Constelación Corona Boreales esta alrededor de su cabeza y el sol parece radiar de ella, sobre la luna
