Dear Family,

This time of quarantine, as peculiar as it is, has been one inviting us to look to matters of the heart and of faith. It’s
as if we are all seeing a big neon sign which confidently proclaims: “Take Time to Think, Talk, and Concern
Yourselves with What Matters Most!” Less distracted by the usual noise, many of us find ourselves asking
questions such as: What really matters in life? What can I go without? In what or in whom does my comfort lie?
We face our limits in a time like this, and this, while a painful process, is a very Christian way of thinking. One of
the biggest questions we ask is concerning our mortality, the fact that, indeed, one day we take our last breath and
then what of our life. In the Latin language, this concern is in the form of a dicho of sorts: memento mori (think of
your death). Dear family, I know this all sounds quite grim, but consider many of the saints who in their preaching
and teaching always brought up the subject of death. They wanted us, their fellow Christians to consider our
relationships, our relationship with God, to take inventory of ways we can truly grow, and to be inspired as we
think of our Eternal Reward and what it would be like to see God face to face. As we hear the story of Jesus and
His friend Lazarus, we do well to remember that Jesus gives us each the same promise of hope in the face of our
death. When we make the decision to continually foster our friendship with Him, we can be assured of His voice
commanding the angels as once He commanded the attendants Lazarus’ tomb: “Unbind him and let him go!” The
truth is, my dear family, that as Christians we need not avoid talking or considering our death, because when we
choose to deal with it face to face, then and only then, can we truly appreciate our life in Christ, which begins now
and has no end!
