TAKE FIVE

A change of plans. Dreamers can’t explain themselves. People ask: “How could you? Why did you?” And dreamers shrug and smile. They make the sacrifice, they take the risk, they think differently, they become someone unimaginable. Ask any artist or composer, star athlete or entrepreneur, priest or monk or missionary: How did you become what your are? They shrug and smile, because it’s hard to tell someone who hasn’t heard the voice themselves: I talk to angels, I listen to the universe, I close my eyes so I can see more clearly. Sit and pay attention to the holy silence

SUFFERING & THE LOVE OF GOD

Why would an all-powerful, all-loving God allow suffering and evil in the world? As Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. explains, unsatisfying answers to this important question are the #1 reason for atheism today. But by answering this question with logic and love (as well as with scientific, peer-reviewed evidence for the existence of life after death), we can not only answer this question truthfully and satisfactorily, but also teach our fellow Christians how to suffer well, in preparation for the limitless love of God that awaits us in eternity. Find this and other fascinating CDs for only $4 at the entrance to OLF church.

LIVING FAiTH AT HOME

Living the faith at home – living as a “domestic church” – includes a rich family prayer life and developing a Catholic culture in the home, inten-tionally deepening the whole family’s relationship with Jesus Christ, with each other, and with the larger Church community. Pope Francis gives us a beautiful snapshot of what the domestic church looks like in his recent docu-ment “On Love in the Family:” “The family is called to join in daily prayer, to read the word of God and to share in Eucharistic communion, and thus to grow in love and become ever more fully a temple in which the Spirit dwells” (no. 29).

5 SIMPLE WAYS TO PRAY AS A FAMILY

Pray at meal time: Make the sign of the Cross and have the kids simply say, “Thank you, Jesus.” Or, you may say the “Bless us O Lord…” pray-er, or whatever other words of thanks to God may be on your heart! These are great reminders for the whole family, about where all good things ulti-mately come from.

Bless each other: Parents can offer a blessing by tracing the sign of the cross on their children’s foreheads, and children can return the favor. This simple practice welcomes God into your relation-ships and reminds all that “our” family belongs to God.

Wonder at Creation: Help your children to recog-nize and adore the glory of God in all things: in the ocean; the night sky; the forest; etc. The awe ex-perienced through His creation can point the family toward God and help to appreciate His power, goodness, and love. Say sorry: When you or your children find your-selves in a situation that requires an apology as remedy, be sure to apologize to God, as well. This will help the family remember its duty to live well in relation to both God and neighbor. Pray through joys and sorrows: Families can pray together in thanksgiving for a good day and for God’s help in difficult times. Praying through both good and bad reminds the family of God’s presence and that he answers all prayers as He sees fit.
