SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson The concept of an “epiphany”, in lower case, has

been somewhat cheapened in our time and culture. Certain celebrities claim to have had one prior to or after their alcohol/other drug addiction has been tamed through rehabilitation. Of course in such instances there is no beacon star or magi. Nor are there precious gifts presented to an Infant King and His Mother.

At the Epiphany, in upper case, the wise men bring another unmentioned gift to Jesus: racial and cultural diversity. Today, in our time and place, the value of that gift is often underrated and under appreciated, even by people who profess Catholicism. The very word “catholic” is the antonym to selectivity of any kind in admission to the people of God. An unknown writer put it poetically: “The world is wide, no wider than the heart is wide. Above the world is stretched the sky, no higher than the soul is high.” The wise men return home “by another way.” Do we need to widen our hearts and stretch our souls in this new year to rid ourselves of any prejudices in order to be truly wise? Nobody can travel along the same way after they have met Christ.

LIFE TEEN It is important because lifeteen brings me closer to God, my faith and friends! I love coming, and I’m very thankful that I can have this experience.

THANK YOU!

The Celebration of Christmas this year carried us to new heights of worship, praise, generosity, and love. On behalf of our entire Church Family, I want to thank all who contributed so much to this awesome display of Faith—first and foremost, thanks to all who congregated with us for worship at any of the seven Masses celebrated in one or another of our three worship sites. Your presence made the efforts of so many well worth the work and preparation. Then, we are most grateful to all who cleaned and decorated each of our worship sites with such care and devoted service. Our liturgical ministers, under the direction of Deacon Gene—Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist; Proclaimers of the Word; and Altar Servers—performed their ministries with great precision and true devotion. Our Music Director, Joanne Cardine, and Choir Director, Jeneen Walker, at OLC, and Judy Hoopes, at St. Malachy brought the absolute best out of our various choirs—St. Malachy, Voices of Praise, Jumpin’ for Jesus, and Kids for Christ—cantors, and musicians. How blessed with musical gifts and talents our Church Family is! Our priests, Fr. John, Fr. Rossi, and myself happily shared the blessing of Word and Sacrament with you in our role as presiders. Then, the least seen, but hardest working people in preparing and executing our Christmas Celebrations are our Parish Staff—Bernadette Cresmer, Joan Halter, Doug and Mary Beth Rohrer, and Mary Wishneski—for whom no task is too great and no burden too heavy, to whom we owe the greatest debt of gratitude. Finally, on behalf of Father John, Father Rossi, and myself, please accept our sincere thanks for your many prayers, spiritual bouquets, gifts, and goodies that have assured us of your love and your apparent desire to keep us fat and frisky. THANK YOU, ONE AND ALL!
