A picture is worth a thousand words By now our parish is on alert that a new pictorial directo-ry is in the works. It has been five years since our parishes compiled a pictorial directory and if you have one of those older directories you will notice that many of the familiar faces are no longer with us. There is a kind of sadness in realizing that, but let there always be a sense of gratitude for the many faces who have left their mark on the parish and the lives of all of us. They are gone but not forgotten and their spirit lives within the walls of the buildings and history of each Church. They are the classic examples of the old adage, “a pic-ture is worth a thousand words.” First introduced in 1911, the expression is so relevant today especially when we page through a parish pictorial directory. Behind each photo there is story after story of our parish family his-tory. Even though some of those faces and smiles are long gone, the stories and memories remain. People enjoy look-ing through a parish directory, and it is time to update ours. Being fairly new to the parish, there are some faces I never had the pleasure to know and some I had to say goodbye to way too soon. And others, I look forward to seeing when we gather to pray and celebrate our life together. For each face, a thousand words may not even begin to cover what they did for all of us. I say a little prayer in remembrance and appreciation for the gift each are to our parishes. What we are willing to continue here in the name of stewardship is a tribute and honor to their memory. Where they left off, we must continue. The pictorial directory chronicles more than just our membership and parish listing. It serves as a time capsule or a snap shot of this moment in life of our parish and our history. It is always my hope that most of our membership would want to be included and counted among the family photo album of the churches of St. Anthony, St. Kather-ine and St. Paul. A parish is not just a place where one at-tends religious services. It is a place to which one belongs. Belonging is what the pictorial directory really chronicles when it is completed. “A picture is worth a thousand words.” And your picture and membership here is greatly appreciated. Your photo in our parish family album is an important testament to be-longing to your parish. Please participate in this project to help us record the next chapter of our history. Let the faces of our parishes tell the story we all love to hear, and the story that tells of a strong Catholic Faith alive in God’s Church among His people.

Synod SnippetsBy Fr. Jason Signalness

This week, I continue the discussion of chapter II of the Synod document, specifically section IX on the Lay Faith-ful. This section deals with the “laity,” which includes all persons who are not members of the clergy or a religious order. The section begins with various reminders that ev-ery layperson is called to grow in holiness in a way com-patible with their state in life. As statute 83.1 says, “Ac-cording to their own vocation, the lay faithful have a duty to build up the people of God, especially in their families, their places of work and the public sphere.” Everyone, not just clergy, are called to live lives that include a routine of prayer and study of the Catholic faith. Everyone is also called, these statutes remind us, to respect life and to see children as a gift of God. As the section progresses, it becomes very practical. Statute 85, for example, explains that, “Lay persons are at-tached to the parish in which they reside, properly respect-ing the diocesan norms on parish boundaries. Permission to belong to another parish may be given only by the Dioc-esan Bishop.” This reminds us that a “parish” is a territory with geographic boundaries, and not just a church building and office. Those who live within the boundaries of a giv-en parish are the “parishioners” of that parish unless they were “registered” at a different parish prior to these new laws taking effect, or unless they were given permission by our bishop to join or register in a parish where they do not reside. Practically, this means if you live, for example, within the boundaries of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish but want to join St. Mary’s Church of Hague, you must write a letter to Bishop Kagan asking permission to join or register as a member of the parish of St. Mary. What are our boundaries, you might ask? Well, the Dio-cese is currently re-configuring the boundaries of all par-ishes. This information will become available by June 1, 2017. While on the topic of registering or joining a parish, I do hope all Catholics who live in our parishes do contact the parish office to register. Doing so helps us keep in contact with all the Catholics in the area and keep them informed. It also enables a person to, for example, receive the official diocesan newspaper, the Dakota Catholic Action. These statutes also explain the rights and obligations laypersons have in their parishes. Examples include a right to the sacraments and to catechetical instruction for people of all ages, especially for children. As far as obligations, the statutes mention an obligation of the laity to “give a portion of their resources to the Church for its works,” to promote social justice, to be good stewards of their gifts of time, talent and treasure, and to help the poor..

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds5th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Week of February 5, 2017

Vocation View— Let your light shine and give God praise! Hiding your light doesn’t serve anyone. Where will you chooseto “glow”! (Matthew 5:13-16)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Stewardship is putting our faith in action through the use of the gifts given to us by God. It is becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ. The Lord did not want us to be passive in our approach to living. He wants more from us than just being quietly holy. Remember that stewardship is a call from God to recognize that all of our blessings and talents have been given to us for a purpose. As baptized Catholics it is our obligation to share these gifts willingly in or-der to serve the Church and our parish community. As we have pointed out many times, stewardship is much more than financial support. It is, as stated, putting our faith in action with the key word there as “action.” In that way we can become, also as stated, a true disciple of the Lord. In today’s Gospel reading from the Book of Matthew Jesus calls us salt and then light. He tells us, for ex-ample, that we are the light of the world, reflecting His light. Specifically He says to those who choose to be His disciple, “Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand.” St. Teresa of Calcutta once said, “To keep a lamp burning you have to keep putting oil in it.” If we see our-selves as lamps as Jesus told us we should be, we need to keep the oil in it and that requires action on our part.

Reading I : Isaiah 58:7-10True holiness is found in right relationships with one another.• Isaiah’s audience had recently returned from exile.• They were frustrated that the restoration of Jerusa-

lem was taking so long.• Isaiah is unsympathetic and tells them to share,

regardless of disappointments.

Reading II : 1 Corinthians 2:1-5Paul’s second illustration of holiness: become transparent to let God’s light shine through.• Paul met rejection in Corinth.• Paul says he can’t rely on human eloquence.• He wants faith to have a strong foundation.

Gospel : Matthew 5:13-16Salt is another image of holiness, and saltiness is given by God.• Jesus’ disciples are to be like salt, constant and self-

giving.• Light symbolizes the goodness of the disciples, their

sharing the life of God, who is light.• Those who see the light in the disciples will praise,

not the disciples, but God.
