State ParksPlan your vacation around the pleasures of the great outdoors
in the Ottawa County vacationland. A yearly visit should be on
your bucket list because there are more State Parks herethan in any other county in Ohio. Birding, shing, and boating
top the list for recreational adventures, with camping, biking,
hiking, and swimming right behind.
Catawba Island State Park is located on N.W. CatawbaRoad. This day park offers a shing pier, launch ramp, picnic area
with shelter, and swimming. There is a reservable shelter house atboth Catawba and South Bass Island for family or business events.
East Harbor State Park boasts a 1,500 foot sandybeach and 11+ miles of hiking trails. The park includes the largest
campground in the Ohio State Park system. Picnic areas are
conveniently located next to the beach and allow for memorableviews of the lake and surrounding marshlands.
On the mainland, the Marblehead Lighthouse State
Park is located on the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula. Its oneof Lake Eries best known and most photographed landmarks andis open for touring weekdays during the summer.
Oak Point Park on South Bass Island is a day use park locatedon the northwest tip of South Bass Island. A scenic picnic area,shing access, and overnight docking facilities are all available.

Birding atits BestBird watching is at its best here in Ottawa County! Locatedat the junction of two migratory yways, the County is a
magnet for both transient and resident birds of all varieties
along the miles of natural shoreline. Hundreds of differentspecies have been identied, making this one of the best bird
watching areas in the United States. Sightings of bald eagles,countless ducks, hawks, swans, and Canada Geese are
commonplace.
Spring is SpectacularMagee Marsh Wildlife Area has more than 2,000 acres of
prime habitats in which more than 300 bird species have beensighted in the past making this an outstanding American
birding hot spot. The wildlife area is open dawn to dusk,
year-round. Spring migration of warblers is spectacular;ducks, trumpeter swans, bald eagles, and shorebirds are
also common.
Birding Through the Seasons and MoreYear-round birding enthusiasts can visit the Sportsmans
Migratory Bird Center located at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area.It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11
a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays every weekend March
through November.
Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is an over 8,000 acre refuge
with winding hiking trails traversing a variety of habitats. Areabird watchers regard the refuge as one of the premier bird
watching spots in the Midwest. Trails are open dawn to dusk,year-round. A newly constructed Visitors Center is open
weekdays.
Located in the remnants of the vast Great Black Swampregion, Black Swamp Bird Observatory offers students
day-long exploration of the entire marsh ecosystem. Takeyour kids for a nature hike and learn about area conservation
efforts. The Biggest Week in American Birding is scheduledin May each year and features guided bird walks and bus

Lake Erie is a virtual playground. A massive sandbar nearMarblehead is the anchoring spot of choice for hundreds of

Access to the lake is available to boaters at several key visitorpoints. The trailer boater has numerous launch ramps that
provide access to Lake Erie. They are located throughout the
County on Catawba Island, Marblehead Peninsula, SanduskyBay, and at several private marine facilities. For more

Boaters should always consult ofcial marine charts before
navigating Lake Eries waters, particularly around the islands.Pay close attention to weather reports, as conditions on the
lake can change very quickly.
Lake Erie is a delight for the sailboat enthusiast.
Destinations are numerous and the local marinas
have enough water to accommodate most vessels.
If you do not own a boat, but wish to participatein the joy of water sports, Ottawa County offers
that opportunity too. A sunset cruise around the
beautiful islands can be the perfect beginning toa romantic vacation. Charter your own personal
skipper to navigate the waters to your favorite
destination. Rent a bareback sailboat or apontoon boat on the quiet waters of the Portage
River. Lake Eries waters are ready to be

Anglers can tackle their sport from a variety of angles on Lake
Erie. The area has earned the title of The Walleye Capital
of the World for its state-of-the-art facilities and incredibleshing, which includes the largest private charter eet on the
Great Lakes. Many options greet those looking to spend a day
at the lake. Consider shing from shore, a pier, a private boat,or a charter boat.
Charter Boat Fishing
Several types of shing charters are available. In general,walk-on charters or head boats accommodate anywhere
from 20 to 50 people and have a per person fee, typically for asix-hour trip. Reservations are recommended. Charter boats
handling six anglers or less have a per trip fee.
Private Boat FishingPrivate boat launch facilities are available across the Lake Erie
shoreline. Weather on the lake can change quickly, so be sureto get a marine forecast before heading out. Keep an ear to
the weather radio while on the water.
Rental Boat FishingIf you are comfortable handling a 22-28 foot boat, well
maintained boats are available to rent with membershipin a local boating club.
Fishing from ShoreMany public shing piers and breakwalls provide easy shoreline
access. Species most often caught from shore include pansh,
yellow perch, smallmouth bass, freshwater drum, and channelcatsh.

COMPETITIVEMARKSMEN ONTARGETNational Rifle and Pistol Matches
Offer High-Level Competition
Each year, thousands of the nest marksmen in the UnitedStates and from Australia, Europe and South America converge
at an Ohio National Guard training site just six miles west ofPort Clinton. They arrive to compete for top honors in the
pistol, smallbore rie, and highpower rie competitions. These
matches draw more than 7,000 competitors, support staff, andvolunteers to the Camp Perry Training Site, home of the Civilian
Marksmanship Program.
The mission of the Civilian Marksmanship Program is to promoterearms safety training and rie practice for all qualied U.S.citizens, with special emphasis on the youth of America.
Considered by many to be the world series of competitionshooting in the United States, the National Matches have been
held for over 100 years each July and August at the historic
Camp Perry. The matches include Civilian MarksmanshipProgram National Trophy Matches and National Rie Association
Championships.
Marksmen make their annual pilgrimages to Camp Perry in hopes
of shooting well enough to earn awards such as DistinguishedShooters badges and Presidents One Hundred honors or to take
home a trophy.
The Camp Perry ring range complexconsists of the longest continuous rie
ring line in the world, running
approximately 3,400 feet alongthe Lake Erie shoreline. Four
different ring ranges have ringdistances as long as 1,000 yards
and cover approximately 240 of
Camp Perrys 603 acres. Visitorsare always welcome.

GovernmentDuring the last two decades Ottawa County has
undergone many positive changes. Seven villages, twelvetownships, and one municipality have developed a positive
attitude of cooperative governing. This has helped spurtourism, industry retention, and growth in this area of

The day-to-day operations of Ottawa County governmentare handled by three county commissioners elected to four-

he history of Oak Harbor, Ohio begins in October 1832, when Joseph Wardlowaked a claim and plotted a village some 10 miles inland from the mouth of the
ortage River in Salem Township. The settlement was incorporated on
ctober 12, 1835 as the village of Hartford. W.W. Wardlow became thest mayor.
ne important gure in the development of Oak Harbor was Adolphus Kraemer.
raemer brought his family to Hartford in 1838 and went about improving his
wn. He opened a general store and built a saw mill. By 1850, Kraemer was theealthiest landowner in Salem Township. He would, until his death in 1885, be the
riving force behind every improvement, school building, land donation for churches, sponsorship of charitable needs,
tablishment of services, or decisions regarding railroad locations.

Because there were three other Hartfords in Ohio, the post ofce
requested a name change, and after much discussion Oak Harborwas chosen. Oak Harbor was incorporated April 17, 1871. By the1880s the area had 987 people, the majority of German descent,
and small farms had begun to emerge. Today, the community is
proud and resilient, and some think of it as the biggest little townin Ohio.

s earliest settlers the Ottawa Indians. Migrating fromanada, these native North Americans took advantage of
e areas abundant wildlife. They lived and traveled alonge banks of the Portage River.

Built Upon Limestoneglacier deposited an incredible and unique limestone
dge through this area containing heavy strata of pureiagara Dolomite, close to the ear ths surface. Limestone

ere unsurpassed and made the area famous for its limeeposits. Genoa was the greatest lime shipping p oint of
e former Lake Shore Railroad. The lime industry wasne of the earliest industries to be developed in

is produced today atGenoa by Graymont,
LTD, which manufacturesthe primary raw material,
a rock from the remains
of coral animals and plantsfrom the bottom of oceans.
The dolomitic limestone in
Genoa is considered to be one of thebest deposits in the world for the production
of lime products.Oil and gas were also an important industry to the area.
In the ea rly 1900s, 334 wells were completed. Theformation from which oil and gas was obtained is known
as Trenton Limestone. The portion that contains oil and
gas is called Dolomite.
Historic Buildings and GrottoThe Town Hall (1883), The Little Privy built for schoolchildren, and the 600 block of Main Street, as well as parts
of Washington Street, are all part of the National Register
of Historic Places.
