ttawa County was formed March 6, 1840, and named for the Indian

ord meaning trader, based on the trading of furs and skins between

e Ottawa Tribe and the settlers.

he eet of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry was put in near South

ass Island before defeating the British in the Battle of Lake Erie, duringe War of 1812. The site now called Put-in-B ay was derived from this

ent. Perrys ship, Niagara, ew a banner with the words Dont Give Up

he Ship. Perrys victory was celebrated throughout th e United States,e only surrender of the British Fleet in history, which helped prevent a

estern invasion of the United States.

iddle and North Bass Islands were settled by Germans, who found the

nds suitable for growing grapes and making wine. Notably, Middle Bassand was once a retreat for four Presidents: Hayes, Cleveland, Harrison,

    d Taft.

uilt in 1821, and the oldest lighthouse in Ohio, the Marblehead

ghthouse was originally called the Sandusky Bay Light. This notedhthouse stands at the end of the Marblehead Peninsula, which has been

e roughest point on Lake Erie since the beginning of navigation on the

    reat Lakes.

etween April 1862 and September 1865, Johnsons Island served as a

litary prison, primarily for Confederate ofcers. No buildings remain,t the Island is the site of the prison cemetery.

ort Clinton is home to the Ottawa County Courthouse, a site on

e National Register of Historic Places. With its exterior made of

hio sandstone, each side of the front entranceway has a carving ofOttawa Indian. The tall bell towers clock still sounds the time and

visible from all directions. Inside the Courthouse are mosaic oors,

arble wainscoting and a pink marble staircase, plus murals depicting theountys history, including a two-story mural of one of Perrys victories

    uring the War of 1812.

he Village of Oak Harbor, previously known as Hartford, was founded

1835. Sawmills and various lumber-related industries were built hereclear timbers around the Village. Portage River trafc moved products

Lake Erie and on to national and world ports. The name Oak Harbor

ects the prominence of the wood in the surrounding area and theportance of the Portage River to the Village.

rther west are the villages of Genoa and Elmore, once part of the

Great Black Swamp, which was created by a retreating glacier about

0,000 years ago. Both villages have preserved a unique historic avor.

he history of Oak Harbor, Ohio begins in October 1832, when Joseph Wardlowaked a claim and plotted a village some 10 miles inland from the mouth of the
