Fair Clean Up

Summer 2016 Page 2 OTTAWA COUNTY 4-H FAMILY NEWSLETTER

We are looking for 4-H Clubs to volunteer their time during the week of the fair to help clean up after livestock shows in the show barn. As most of us know there are many shows held throughout the fair and with each show comes a little mess. We are asking for two clubs to give their time after each livestock show to clean up trash, wipe down bleachers, and assist with setting up the show arena for the next show.

Brooms, buckets, and rags will be provided. Since the work will be somewhat dirty, we suggest you bring your own gloves for sanitary purposes. Unfortunately, because of the show ending times being flexible there is not a set time that each show will be over. At the conclusion of the show your club will be paged to the show barn. Please contact Janene Lattimore (419-656-5845) to sign up for a time.

DON’T FORGET! The Extension Office is still closed on Fridays. Office hours are: Monday – Thursday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. We will be open on Fridays by APPOINTMENT ONLY! If you would like to come in on a Friday, please call during regular office hours to make an appointment.

A Message from the Livestock Sale Committee….

Greetings market livestock exhibitors. As you are selecting and working with your 4-H animals, please keep in mind the livestock sale is fast approaching. While you and your parents are visiting and working with different individuals and businesses, please invite these people whom you have relationships with to the sale to come and support you, your project, and also your fellow livestock exhibitors. They can also support you by contributing additional money through the livestock sale by adding it to your project when it is sold. This is done by completing the “Multiple Add On Form” found within the livestock sale committee’s section of the Ottawa County Fair’s website. Also, please tell them about the Buyer’s Club. This has been established to help those that cannot attend the sale but still wish to support the exhibitors and their projects. The Buyer’s Club is also convenient for supporters wishing to help many exhibitors and their projects. These contributions are pooled with other members of the Buyer’s Club to make advertising bids (premium bids) at the livestock sale. Participants of the Buyer’s Club are also recognized in livestock sale post fair advertisements along with the other market buyers. This form can also be found within the livestock sale committee’s section of the Ottawa County Fair’s website at www.ottawacountyfair.org. Please check the fair’s website for more information pertaining to the livestock sale on Friday, July 22, beginning at 9 AM and the back to the farm feeder calf sale on Saturday, July 23, beginning at 10 AM. A Few Reminders To All Market Livestock Exhibitors: • Please bring a 12 pack of pop or a case of water, and 1 dozen cookies to the show barn on Friday, July 22 at 8 AM for the sale luncheon. • Please be available on Thursday, July 21 following the goat show to help set up for the livestock sale. • Please be available on Friday, July 22 at the conclusion of the livestock sale to help clean up and re-arrange some things for the Back To The Farm Feeder Calf Sale on Saturday, July 23. The sale committee is looking for volunteers to serve on next year’s committee. If anyone is interested, please see any sale committee member during the fair and express your interest and availability to help.

New Grading System for 2016 for Pre-Fair & Miscellaneous Projects

Listed below you will find the new grading system for pre-fair and

miscellaneous projects. This is not to be compared to the old grading system of A, B, C. We hope this will allow more opportunities to give exhibitors extra recognition when they need encouragement and hope they would try again. Superior (Dark Purple Ribbon): Exhibitor who went above and beyond the project requirements. They had superior knowledge of project and developed an extensive exhibit. Outstanding (Light Purple Ribbon): Exhibitor who met all project requirements. They had basic knowledge of subject matter and a nice exhibit. Good (Green Ribbon): Exhibitor who only met some project requirements. They need more project knowledge and more extensive exhibit. Needs Improvement (Light Green Ribbon: Exhibitor did not meet project requirements. When Selecting overall winners, the judges will start with the superior ratings then move onto outstanding members.

Skill-a-Thon Grading

The exhibitors score will be given the day of skill-a-thon judging. A score of superior, outstanding, good, or needs improvement will be given. A test out score is superior. Age groups 10 & under, 11-13, 14 & over. For the following ages, even if you test out, you have to take skill-a-thon again: 11 & 14.

Good sportsmanship is about playing by the rules, discipline, respect, and self-control. A good sport has fun because they enjoy participating in the activity more than the final outcome. As we approach the judging and fair season, remember to be a good sportsman. Whether you are taking a food and nutrition project, showing a steer, or running for a position on the 2016 fair royalty court, remember to show pride in yourself and your project by playing fair and showing respect to not only yourself but to those who are competing against you.

Here are some good sportsmanship tips to remember for the next few weeks. 1. Show respect to yourself by treating others the way you want to be treated. 2. Respect the rules of the activity and project by always playing fair. 3. Offer encouragement to other participants, especially when they make mistakes. 4. Forgive yourself when you make a mistake and get right back in the game. 5. Lose without pouting and win without gloating.

KNOWING OHIO'S LIVESTOCK TAMPERING LAWS HELPS MAINTAIN RESPONSIBLE FOOD PRODUCTION AT OHIO'S FAIRS

By Dr. Tony Forshey

State Veterinarian, Ohio Department of Agriculture Summer marks the beginning of fair season – a time when thousands of 4-H youth all across the state showcase the animal projects they have spent so much time perfecting. As these hard working kids gear up to show their animals, I want to encourage all exhibitors to be aware of livestock tampering rules so they do not accidentally disqualify their market animal projects. Some key things to keep in mind as you prepare your animal for the show ring:

• If an animal is sick, the exhibitor should contact the veterinarian. • Prescription medications must be prescribed by a veterinarian for a valid medical purpose. • Extra-label use of any medication must be prescribed by a veterinarian and have an extended withdrawal time. • Over-the-counter drugs must be used according to label directions for a valid medical purpose. • Showing any livestock which has been administered a drug that exceeds the tolerance level, or a drug for which the withdrawal period has not elapsed, is prohibited.

Other prohibited practices include: exhibiting an animal which has been tranquilized, making a false statement on a drug use notification form, failing to file or update a drug use notification form, negligently causing an unlawful substance to be present in an animal, or failing to sign a chain of custody form. If you have questions, calling the right person can make all the difference. As the regulatory agency to ensure food safety and prevent livestock tampering, we have seen instances in past years in which livestock exhibitors unknowingly violated Ohio’s livestock tampering laws. For example, if an exhibitor has a problem with their animal and they call the breeder rather than their veterinarian, the well-meaning breeder may inadvertently give the animal a medicine that would disqualify them from competition. If you have a question or medical concern about your animal, you should always call your veterinarian. Consulting with your veterinarian can prevent an accidental disqualification. Drug residues and other signs of tampering not only pose food safety concerns, they can provide an unfair competitive advantage over other animals. In an effort to keep things safe and to level the playing field for all animal exhibitors, the Ohio Department of Agriculture will continue to strictly enforce livestock tampering rules this fair season. Animal exhibition is an important part of youth leadership development and preparation for future food and livestock production. Lessons learned in the show ring prepare youth to be the next generation of successful, responsible food animal producers in our state. In addition to providing us with necessities like food, milk, shelter, and even fuel, food and agriculture provides one in seven people with jobs and generates $105 billion to the economy. As our population continues to grow, livestock exhibitors will become even more important in passing our agricultural traditions to future generations and helping to provide much needed food and agricultural products. As you make your final preparations to head into the show ring, I urge all of our youth exhibitors to be aware of Ohio’s livestock tampering laws and to be diligent in making sure your animal does not fall victim to an accidental or intentional tampering. For additional information or clarification, contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Animal Health at 614-728-6220. I wish every one of our animal exhibitors a safe, exciting and successful showing season.

Cultivate the Clover of Ottawa County is a non-profit organization established to provide financial support for the 4-H programming, education, recognition, and participation in local, state, and national leadership activities. The annual “Dinner and Auction” was established to help raise funds to ensure that 4-H activities and programs will continue to be available to the youth of Ottawa County. Federal, state, and county governments support the Ottawa County 4-H program. However, public funds cannot fully support the 4-H program’s needs, nor can the monies be used for 4-H member awards, incentives, or volunteer development and recognition. Thus, the support from your personal interest and giving is vital to the success of the Ottawa County 4-H program as we all continue to “Make the Best Better” through the following activities:

• 4-H School Enrichment Programs • Afterschool Programming • Advisor/Member Training and Recognition • Camps • Scholarships for college

We invite you to help financially support the youth and the future growth of the Ottawa County 4-H Program. Your monetary donation and or auction item would be appreciated.
