Dates and times of the serviceThe service operates from Tuesday 11 to Sunday 16 September from 0800 to 2130 andstops at all University accommodation. If you arenot sure whether you are living in Universityaccommodation, please check the list of residenceson the booking form. We run a very frequent servicewhich means that you shouldn’t have to wait muchmore than an hour before you can take your seat onthe coach. However at rush hour and very busyperiods, buses can take longer to make the roundtrip so we would ask you to be patient. Journey timeis between 20 and 60 minutes depending upon hall.

How to use the serviceYou must book a place in advance online by Friday 7September, this is a separate process from bookinga place on the Orientation Programme.www.manchester.ac.uk/international/arrival/travel/airport-collection/booking-form

When you arrive at Manchester Airport, look outfor our ‘Purple People’ student helpers who will bewearing purple T-shirts with the University ofManchester logo. There will be Purple People ineach terminal who will direct you to the airport busstation from where the Airport Collection Servicecoaches depart at regular intervals.

Please note: that there are no porters available at Manchester Airport or at Universityaccommodation so you will need to carry your own luggage.

Travelling to your accommodationwithout using the Airport Collection ServiceIf you are travelling with family members or non-student friends, or are arriving outside of theAirport Collection Service times, you are advised touse public transport. Taxis are readily availableoutside the airport and cost approximately £25 tothe city centre. Alternatively, there is a rail link directfrom the airport to Manchester Piccadilly railwaystation in Manchester city centre. The cost of asingle ticket is around £3.20.

Advice on travelling to the UKThe Arrival Guide, which you should have alreadyreceived, contains information and advice on whatto pack, what to expect at the airport and how totravel around Manchester. The Guide is alsoavailable to download fromwww.manchester.ac.uk/international/supportservices/arrival

The University runs a free coach transfer service for new international students arrivingat Manchester Airport. The service is offered to unaccompanied students who will beliving in University accommodation. If you are travelling with family or staying in privateaccommodation then you will need to arrange your own transport from the airport.

Airport Collection Service 0800 – 2130 Waiting time usually 1 hour maximum. Journey time is between 20 and 60 minutes depending on the Hall of Residence. The final destination is usuallyWhitworth Park.

The following pages set out some generalinformation about the Programme, a schedule ofevents and a brief introduction to what eachsession will contain. We recommend that allstudents attend one of the formal sessions onFriday 14, Saturday 15 or Sunday 16 September.Aside from this session, you can choose which ofthe other activities and events you are mostinterested in attending.

Bringing friends and family to events.You are very welcome to bring adult family orfriends with you to any of the Orientation eventsapart from the Presentations where we might needto limit the audience to new students just becauseof the capacity of the Lecture Theatres. Childrenare also very welcome at events located inbuildings to which they can be admitted.

How to book onto the Orientation Programme Please use the electronic booking form atwww.manchester.ac.uk/international/arrival/orientation/booking-form to book yourplace on the Orientation Programme.

We do not ask you to sign up in advance forparticular sessions. However we would like you to indicate some of the sessions you may attend so that we can judge the numbers expected more accurately.

Before you make your booking, it's a good idea to make a note on the timetable of the sessionsand activities you plan to attend.

All the events are free apart from the InternationalSociety Barbecue on Sunday 16 September whichcosts £6.00. Please note: that no food oraccommodation is provided within theprogramme.

All events are organised on a first come first served basis except for the City Coach tour and the International Society Barbecue, for which youwill need to collect a ticket in advance from theInternational Society Helpdesk once you arrive inManchester. Make sure you come early to eventsas space is sometimes limited.

The Orientation Loyalty CardYou will see that alongside your planner on the back page we’ve given you a loyalty card to guide your choices in order to get the most out of your Orientationexperience. At each event or activity you attend you will be able to collect a coloured sticker – fill up your card, add your contact details and you can be entered in ourprize draw. The winner will receive £100 of Amazonvouchers to treat themselves ….. or to buy text books.Completed cards should be handed into the InternationalSociety Helpdesk by 12pm on Friday 21 September.

Helpdesks in halls and on campus operate every day throughout Orientation, where youcan pick up self-guided campus tours and get answers to many questions. InternationalStudent Check-In is open every day (if required) - where you can also make anappointment to register with the police (if required) - as well as the main Registrationvenue where you can pay tuition fees and pick up your student ID card. Asda Supermarket Trips and Shopping

A guide to activities and events

The list below gives information about all the events that are taking place. Have alook through and make a note of those you are most interested in and note themdown on your planner on the back page. You will see from the planner that we haveindicated those sessions we feel will be most valuable to different kinds of students.

Formal Presentation Sessions: • Friday at 0930• Saturday at 1000• Sunday at 1000Presentations are given by staff from across theUniversity and the community, covering essentialinformation relevant to all international and EEAstudents, regardless of your course. They aresimilar in style to the lectures you will have while inManchester, and you will usually not have anopportunity to ask questions. Please arrive in goodtime as the presentations are extremely popular.The formal sessions all follow the same format,(which is outlined below) and you need only attend once. All presentations take place inUniversity Place (Building 37 on your map).

University of Manchester Students’ Union(UMSU)As the largest student union in the UK, UMSUoffers something for everybody. This presentationgives you an overview of what’s on offer - fromsocial events, hundreds of student societies, anewspaper and radio station, to help, advice, andrepresentation – and tells you how you can getinvolved.

Safety and SecurityManchester is a safe and friendly place to study, but some students can experience theft, –particularly when belongings are left unattended.This presentation from an officer of GreaterManchester Police, and the University’s SecurityService, will equip you with simple ways to protectyourself from losing your valuables, and make yourtime in Manchester as safe as possible.

Living in a Diverse CommunityManchester is home to one of the most diversecommunities in the UK. This presentation from theEquality and Diversity Team will explain the valuesand legal protections that make the UK such amulticultural place to live and study, as well asgiving you an opportunity to reflect on your ownapproach to different cultures.

The briefing is compulsory for Study Abroad andExchange students (except Manchester BusinessSchool exchange). Please note: that StudyAbroad and Exchange are terms that we use atthe University to describe those students whoare with us for a period of one academic year orone semester as part of a University or Schoolwide exchange. English Language Support• Saturday at 1500 • Sunday at 1300An opportunity to find out how the University canhelp you improve your English and academic skillsduring your studies. This session is aimed at non-nativespeakers of English who would like to access support.

Healthcare in the UK• Saturday at 1200 • Sunday at 1000This session, led by a qualified health care practitioner from The University’s OccupationalHealth Service, will explain how: the BritishNational Health Service works, how to register with a General Practitioner (GP), where to buymedicines and how to call for emergency assistance.The session will also give you simple tips on how tokeep healthy. Have a look at the information onHealth on our Facebook page so that you can cometo the session with your questions already prepared.

IT on Campus• Saturday at 1400This session will introduce you to the range of ITprovision and support at the University. The speakerwill also discuss ways to keep your online profilesecure and give some advice on using socialnetworking sites. There will also be an opportunityto find out more about copyright and malpracticeissues arising from improper use of the web.


Question and Answers Sessions(Q&A)The question and answer sessions in theOrientation programme aim to give you theopportunity to ask the questions that you mostwant an answer to. The majority of the sessionsare specific and focussed – similar in style to thesessions you might have with your academic tutorwhilst you are here. Included in the Q&Aprogramme are the Discussion Groups withstudents which are not focussed on a single topicbut which will allow you to ask anything you want.All Q&A sessions take place in University Place(Building 37 on your map)

Successful Start for Postgraduate Research Students (PGR)• Sunday at 1400We expect a lot from our junior academics, and it’sonly right that you should expect a lot from us too.In this session, a current PhD researcher will giveyou an outline and lead a discussion on what itmeans to be a postgraduate researcher at TheUniversity of Manchester. They will give you usefuland practical advice about the University’s onlinetool to record and monitor progression and skillstraining activity of PGR students (e-prog), using thelibrary effectively and accessing their courses, PhDstudent study villages, having and maintaining asocial life, assessment and vivas. You will also haveplenty of time to ask your own questions. This session also includes the presentation on Managing a Successful Supervision Relationship.A successful working relationship with your PhD supervisor can be critical to success andenjoyment, in your research. This workshop willequip you with the tools to build, and maintain,successful professional relationships with yoursupervisor and other colleagues in your department.

Successful Start for Masters students • Sunday at 1530You’ve made a big decision to come to Manchesterfor your Masters. This session will help you make themost of your time here right from the start, covering:different teaching and learning issues at Masterslevel, undertaking research, and writing a dissertation.

University Support Services• Saturday at 1400• Sunday at 1200An interactive overview of the Support Servicesavailable to all students, using real-life case studies to give you the knowledge about whereyou and your friends can get quality advice and guidance on a range of academic and non-academic matters.

Your Money and Banking• Saturday at 1300• Sunday at 1100The aim of this session is to provide you with help in adjusting to a new financial system, newcurrency and different costs of items in shops,there will be some additional information availableon how to budget your finances. Information willalso be available on UK banking and how to opena bank account.

Tours and TripsTours and trips will mean that you start to be ableto find your way around the campus and the city.Asda trips and City tours leave from the bus stops onBrunswick Street (100 and 101 on your maps), Campustours leave from the Whitworth Building (51 onyour map) on Thursday and from University Place(37 on your map) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

• Sunday first tour 1100 – last tour 1500 Walking tours of the campus will take placethroughout the Programme. Purple People will be leading the tours, familiarising you with the layout

of the Campus and pointing out importantbuildings such as the Library, your School andcatering outlets.

City coach tours • Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 1100 and 1500

Take a coach tour around Manchester to locate keyshops, cultural venues and sights and learn a littleabout the history and heritage of Manchester. Eachtour lasts three hours and is led by a professional guide.Please note: although there is no charge for thetour, you must have a ticket. You can collect yourticket from the International Society helpdeskfrom Tuesday 11 September. As the tours are verypopular, they are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you wish to travel on the samebus with friends or family, we advise you tocollect your tickets as soon as possible.

Self guided tours There are two self guided tours which focus on the social and non-academic areas of campusand the locality. One tour takes you south alongthe Oxford Road corridor and towards Rusholme,the other takes you north towards the city centre.Each tour takes between 1 and 2 hours tocomplete. Guides can be collected from your hallshelpdesk. If you complete the trail and bring youranswer sheet to the staff on the InternationalSociety Helpdesk by Friday 21 September you willbe entered in a prize draw!

Finding Private Accommodation Q&A• Saturday at 1230If you are planning to live in private accommodation, this workshop with ManchesterStudent Homes will make the process as simple aspossible, from finding somewhere suitable andchecking your contract, to ensuring that theproperty is safe and living harmoniously with yourneighbours.

Getting involved in your Students’ Union• Saturday at 1030 • Sunday at 1100Found the Students’ Union presentation interestingand want to know more? This workshop withcurrent elected student representatives will explainhow you can get involved in: the hundreds ofactivities and societies, student activism, and howto get yourself elected as a student rep.

Immigration Q&A for Undergraduates• Saturday at 1000• Sunday at 1030

Immigration Q&A for Postgraduates• Saturday at 1100• Sunday at 1130Staff from the International Advice Team will runseparate immigration workshops – one forundergraduate students and the second for thosestudying at postgraduate level. These sessions willgive you the chance to find out more about yourobligations under Tier 4 and about how theUniversity will go about meeting the requirementsimposed on us by the UK Border Agency. You willalso have the chance to ask any questions relatingto your own situation.

Social EventsOne of the key aspects of Orientation is to meetyour new fellow students and to start making newconnections. Some events take place in the daytime as well as the evening. Social events are key interms of you making a successful transition to yournew home so come along – we’re looking forwardto meeting you!

If you feel energetic and want to socialise, theCeilidh is for you! A Ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) is an informal social gathering with traditionalBritish music and dancing. It is great fun and youdon’t need any experience to take part. The ‘caller’will tell you what to do, just join in and have fun.Please come dressed in clothes and footwearsuitable for dancing.

Arriving in Manchester

This information is intended to help you when you are planning your arrival and during your first few days.

AccommodationPlease note: that accommodation is notprovided as part of the OrientationProgramme. If you are going to be staying inUniversity accommodation during your studieshere, we will make every effort to place you in yourpermanent, term-time accommodation throughoutthe Orientation Programme. The start date formost University Accommodation contracts isThursday 13 September, however, some contractsdo not commence until Saturday 15 or Sunday 16September so this might not always be possible. If you are unsure about the date on which youraccommodation contract starts or if you intend toarrive prior to the beginning of your contract,please check directly with your accommodationregarding availability by emailing [email protected] quote your University ID number in all communication.

If you are living in University accommodation, youmight want to order a bedding pack to cut downon your luggage. This should be done in advanceat estore.manchester.ac.uk please type thewords ‘bedding pack’ in the search box.

Alternative accommodationarrangementsIf your term-time accommodation cannot offer you a room for the period of the OrientationProgramme, please make appropriatearrangements with a hotel or hostel. Manchester Student Homes (MSH) is the University’sonly official source of student accommodation inthe private sector. If you are looking for advice andassistance about private sector accommodation,we would suggest you contact them at [email protected] service can also advise you on short term lets, hotels and hostels for your first few days in Manchester.

Access to Internet / PCsIn order to access the University’s computernetwork you must follow a sign-up procedurewhich you can do before arriving in Manchester or from a University computer cluster. There will be Purple People at the International StudentCheck-In during the Orientation Programme andWelcome Week who are available to help you withany aspect of your IT use from registration to gettingaccess to Facebook. You will need to have yourdate of birth and University ID number which youwill receive with your registration information.

IT sign up will give you a username and passwordwhich you can use on any University computer.You can then access the internet and, if you havenot already done so, complete Universityregistration.


Opening a UK Bank AccountIf you are studying with us for more than onesemester, you are likely to want to open a UK bank account. This can sometimes be a difficultexperience for non-UK students and will certainlytake some time. You should ensure that you haveenough funds available to cover you for your firsttwo weeks in Manchester in case there is a delaywith opening an account. One major difficulty thatstudents encounter is when their names arerecorded differently on their passport from theirstudent record so please do make sure that these are identical.

Please note: that when you come to open abank account in the UK you will need thefollowing documents - (1) Your passport to prove your identity.

(2) A bank letter from the University whichconfirms your home address (this cannot be aPO Box) and your address in Manchester (thiscannot be a hotel).

(3) Your University accommodation contract (if youwill be living in University accommodation).

If you arrive between 3 and 25 September and arean EEA student, you can get a bank letter from usfrom any one of the card collection venues (see page 8 for a list).

If you are an international student you can collect abank letter from International Student Check-In.You will also need to be aware that if you want topay your fees from monies in a new UK bankaccount, it will take at least 5 days for the accountto become active so you will not be able to fullyenrol and receive your student ID card until thisprocess is complete.

Early Payment SchemeThe University has introduced a mandatory deposit scheme for international applicants onpostgraduate courses in the Schools of MACE, EEE,Law, Life Sciences and Maths. Some postgraduatecourses in Manchester Business School are alsoaffected but students should check thisrequirement directly with MBS. A full list ofaffected courses is available here:tinyurl.com/bpwy5tv

The deposit required will be £1,000. If studentschoose to pay more (up to a maximum of the totaltuition fees for their course for the academic year)then they can do so. Any payment made under thisscheme will not be refunded unless the student isrefused a visa and provides a copy of their visarefusal notice. The deposit will not be refunded if the refusal notice cites fraud as the reason for refusal.

Students receiving full scholarships will be exemptfrom the requirement to pay a deposit. Proof ofaward should be emailed to:[email protected] who have paid for a pre-sessional Englishcourse will be exempt from the requirement to paya deposit for the main course.

If you do need to pay the Early Payment Fee thenyou will be sent a link to a webpage that will tellyou how to complete the signup for a University ITaccount and also make the payment online.Students who are unable to pay by credit card can choose to pay by bank transfer etc but suchpayments will take longer to process. Your CAS will not be generated until the payment is made.

Food and DrinkNo food is provided as part of the OrientationProgramme but you can buy meals, snacks anddrinks from various outlets across campus. Details of these can be found at www.foodoncampus.manchester.ac.uk. If youhave any questions about the food available,please ask a Purple Person or a member of staff atthe catering outlet. It is advisable to have somecash with you to purchase food and drink.

GP (Doctor) RegistrationRegistering with a local GP will allow you toconsult a doctor if you are unwell. GPs will beavailable on campus to register you at theUniversity Start of Year Fair which will be runningin the marquee outside University Place on Tuesday18 and Wednesday 19 September. If you miss theFair, you can check where your nearest GP islocated on the NHS site www.nhs.uk/servicedirectories/Pages/serviceSearch.aspx

HelpdesksThere will be several helpdesks open during theprogramme where you can get advice andinformation. You will find helpdesks in selectedUniversity accommodation (see maps 1 and 2), theInternational Society on Oxford Road and at theOrientation venues. The helpdesks will be staffedby our student helpers – ‘Purple People’ – who willbe available all around campus to answer anyquestions you may have, to give you directions and generally to make sure you have a happy, safeand informative welcome to the University. If thereis anything you would like to know or if you have any problems, don’t hesitate to ask a Purple Person.

LibraryAs the Orientation programme runs outside ofterm time you will find that the libraries arerunning to vacation timetables. You can check theopening hours for the Main Library and sitelibraries at www.manchester.ac.uk/library/aboutus/locationsandopeninghoursAs well as the printed and electronic collections,many of the libraries have computer clusters whereyou can complete registration and IT sign up.You do usually need your student card to accessthe library so if you do want to get in before thenyou will need to speak to the staff on duty.

LocationsYou should check the information on events onpages 8 - 20 of this guide to find out where allevents are happening. We have also included mapson pages 40 and 42.

PhotographyA photographer will be taking pictures duringOrientation to use in future publicity materials for the University. If you do not wish your photo to be taken then please speak directly to thephotographer and let them know.

Safety and SecurityManchester is a safe place to live, but as in all citiesyou need to be aware of your own safety andsecurity. The University’s Security Services have avery useful website on crime reductionwww.estates.manchester.ac.uk/CrimeReduction/index.asp and will also make apresentation to you during Orientation.

SmokingSmoking is not permitted in any Universitybuildings, or indeed any public space. Even whenyou are outside, you will need to check whetheryou are in a no smoking zone as sometimes theseare created outside of buildings to protect peopleworking inside.

Students’ UnionEvery student is automatically a member of The University of Manchester Students’ Union. The Union exists to; represent you to the University,provide you with advice, guidance, opportunitiesand entertainment all through your time here.

The Union are running workshops and makingpresentations during Orientation so you will havethe chance to meet your representatives. Inaddition all our evening events are held at theUnion so you will be able to see the building then.

TransportUntil you have your student ID card whichordinarilly allows you to travel aroundcampus on the bus service no.147 for freeyou can use this guide as your pass.

University AccommodationEvents and Activities From Thursday 13 September each universityresidence will be running its own series of talks and events. These will include a Warden’s“Welcome Talk” and information on safety and fire awareness. Further details will be available atyour accommodation on arrival.

University RegistrationYou can register online from 1 September 2012 bygoing to www.manchester.ac.uk and followingthe ‘Register’ link. You can do this from home, orfrom any of the University computer clusters. Please note: that you must give your nameexactly as it appears on your passport whenyou first register otherwise you will haveproblems when your passport is scanned, atpolice registration and when trying to open a bank account.

After completing registration steps 1 – 9 or 1 – 10 if you are paying by credit card or bank transfer and if you are not from the EEA or Switzerland, you must come along to International Student Check-In to: have yourpassport and documents scanned, arrange a policeregistration appointment (if needed), collect aConfirmation of Attendance letter and, if needed,a Bank Letter to enable you to open a bank account.Please note: that information entered into yourstudent record takes 24 hours to upload so youmust allow this length of time between onlineregistration and coming to the Check-In venue.

After this, and once your fees have been paid, youcan collect your student card from one of thestudent card issue venues listed on page 8.

VaccinationsMeningitis C is a potentially serious disease which has a higher prevalence amongst studentpopulations. In the UK the chief medical officer forhealth, advises and recommends that students upto the age of 25 years have a Meningitis Cvaccination. All students are strongly advised tohave the Meningitis C and 2 MMR (Measles,Mumps, Rubella) vaccinations before arriving inManchester. If you have not received thesevaccinations before you arrive, they are availablefree of charge from your GP in the UK. Make sure that you register with a GP (see above) and, if necessary, get these vaccinations at the earliest opportunity.

If you are not from the EEA or Switzerland, youmust check before you travel to the UK that youhave Tier 4 immigration permission (visa) thatallows you to study at The University of Manchester.

If you used a CAS from the University of Manchesterto apply for Tier 4, the immigration permission inyour passport should contain The University of Manchester’s sponsor license number:Q3DK76WN4. If you have immigration permissionwith a different sponsor license number on it you willnot be permitted to register with us until you havemade an application to switch Tier 4 sponsors.

If you are overseas and you have immigrationpermission with a different sponsor license numberon it and you applied with a CAS from a differentTier 4 institution you should make a new Tier 4application from overseas. You should not travel tothe UK with the intention to study at the Universityof Manchester if you have immigration permissionwith a different sponsor license number on it asthis could lead to problems with immigration whenyou arrive in the UK.

Certain nationalities are required to register withthe police within 7 days of arrival in the UK. Pleasecheck the stamp in your passport/visa to see if youneed to register. You must take with you: • your passport; • your visa;• one passport size photograph; • a Confirmation of Attendance letter from the

University (this will be issued with yourappointment); and

• £34 registration fee per person in cash.

You will be asked to fill in an application formwhen you get to the office. It is possible that youwill have a long wait at the Office as a very largenumber of students have to register at this time.
