Introducing Unified CommunicationsUnified Communications (UC) is improving and enhancing the way that enterprises and individuals not

only communicate but also in the way business is transacted. By incorporating multi-media applications

(voice, video, IM, presence) into a single, feature rich user experience, significant productivity and efficiency

gains can be achieved.

What is Unified Communications? There are many definitions of “unified communications” but broadly speaking it combines multiple real-time and offline communication modes (such as telephony, video, email, fax, and instant messaging) plus a range of additional capabilities (including presence detection and click-to-call) into a single, integrated solution. With UC solutions, users can access and manage all of their communications tools from a single environment, regardless of their location.

Data and desktop sharing A feature that allows users to share files, use whiteboard, and display their desktop to a meeting or to conversation participants.

Presence A collection of attributes

that provides an indication of status, activity, location,

ability to communicate, and contact information.

Unified Messaging An application that consolidates a user’s voice mail, fax, and email into one mailbox, so that the user only needs to check a single location for messages, regardless of type.

Instant messaging (IM) A form of real-time text-based communication.

Conferencing Two-way video and audio transmissions between users in multiple locations

Private branch exchange (PBX) replacement

UC integration with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

systems can replace traditional phone exchange systems.

VIDEOVideo conferencing is becoming increasingly important as organisations get more distributed and mobile because it provides a more personal experience that supports effective team-building. Complex interfaces, high cost, and limited features have reduced adoption of video conferencing across the broader workforce. Lync Server 2013 simplifies the user experience by incorporating video into the unified client so that adding scheduling an online meeting with video or escalating to video spontaneously is seamless and easy. In order to provide the most immersive communications experience possible, Lync Server 2013 supports a variety of video conferencing options. high-definition video (resolution 1270 x 720; aspect ratio 16:9) and VGA video (resolution 640 x 480; aspect ratio 4:3) are supported for peer-to-peer calls and among Lync Meeting participants.

With the new Gallery View feature, you automatically see everyone in the Lync Meeting via a continuous view of multiple hD video streams or photos. The video gallery scales to provide the best experience for a diverse set of scenarios including a peer-to-peer video call, showing the most relevant people in the meeting at all times by bringing the 5 dominant speakers’ videos “into focus”.

APPLICATION AND DOCUMENT SHARINGBy integrating traditional application and document sharing into the streamlined Lync 2013 client, Lync Server 2013 delivers a highly accessible and reliable tool that virtually everyone can use. Combined with audio or video conferencing, the result is a highly immersive and collaborative session that is simple to facilitate.

Microsoft Lync delivers a wide range of user benefits that enable enterprises to improve productivity and efficiency and their employees to work smarter. A consistent unified platform and approach delivers feature rich extensibility to both desk based and mobile workers.

The Oracle Advantage

SOLUTION OVERVIEWOracle is the leading provider of Enterprise SBCs (E-SBCs) with a complete portfolio of solutions that enable end-to-end interactive communications across IP network borders. In addition to the range of SBC platforms, call recording solutions can be deployed using the Oracle Communications Interactive Session Recorder (ISR) platform and enhanced application integration and delivery solutions can be deployed using the Oracle Communications Application Session Controller (ASC).

ORACLE SOLUTIONS ARE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO DELIVER:

1. Strong security by safeguarding user confidentiality and privacy

2. Easy interoperability by mitigating multi-vendor, multi-protocol interoperability issues

3. Reliable communications by ensuring service quality and availability

4. Regulatory compliance including call recording

1. SECURITY

All UC real time voice and applications traffic is transmitted and received using the Session Initiation Protocol – SIP. It is essential that all UC traffic is protected against threats and vulnerabilities to the infrastructure. With an increase in traffic traversing public networks, this heightens the risk of security breaches and therefore security is paramount in a UC network. Encryption of signalling and media ensures that from a signalling perspective user details and telephone numbers are not displayed preventing attacks such as toll fraud from taking place. By encrypting media, this ensures that real time traffic content such as IM discussions, voice or video calls cannot be read or played back and used by fraudsters. An E-SBC ensures that all voice traffic is secure preventing not only theft of sensitive data but also ensuring that all telephony services are maintained delivering maximum uptime to the enterprise.

2. INTEROPERABILITY

Unified Communications can be deployed in numerous ways that ultimately involve disparate technologies and manufacturers products and solutions. In order to protect investment and reduce Capex, deploying an E-SBC can enable Unified Communications and allow multiple different products to communicate delivering a seamless solution. An example of this could be connecting the PBX of manufacturer ‘A’ to the messaging platform of manufacturer ‘B’. In this scenario whilst both manufacturers are using SIP, SIP is slightly customised to support their specific solution. Deploying an E-SBC normalises these customisations of the SIP protocol providing transparent communications between the two manufacturers.

3. RELIABILITY

Telephony users have become used to a very good quality voice experience. With traditional PBXs supporting separate cabling for the handsets as well as fixed cabling to fixed line PSTN operators, they have provided both a stable and reliable service. With the move away from traditional fixed line PSTN trunks to ‘soft’ SIP trunks, it is essential that the quality of experience (QoE) is maintained throughout. The role of the SBC is to deliver Quality of Service (QoS) to ensure that voice calls are prioritised over other traffic streams, are of consistent high quality and are managed dynamically based upon bandwidth and call quality metrics received. Additionally hardware can be duplicated to deliver a “high Availability” design ensuring that should a service become unavailable on one SBC, traffic is then redirected to a second SBC ensuring voice access is maintained.

4. COMPLIANCE

In sectors where sensitive data is discussed such as in finance for telephone banking or stock trading or in healthcare where patient records are discussed and accessed, enterprises need to meet compliance standards such as PCI (Payment Card Initiative, fCC (federal Communications Commission) and hIPPA (health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act); it is essential that all calls are monitored, secured and in relevant cases recorded. Oracle E-SBCs are able to securely manage the sensitive communications that take place irrespective of the specific market sector or type of media, this can be through encryption and or mirroring of calls and traffic to specific call recording and storage platforms.

E-SBCs are typically deployed in data centers, main offices or large regional offices to protect and control connections between IP network islands.

Oracle E-SBCs help enterprises realise the value of IP telephony, interactive video and unified communications that increases organisational collaboration, improves business productivity and speeds business agility. They support a wide variety of applications and businesses – from SMBs to large enterprises – in any industry or market segment.

Oracle E-SBCs are used by Enterprises, Contact Centres, Government and Education customers in a wide range of market segments including finance and manufacturing to realise the value of IP voice and video communications.

Microsoft Lync Server and Oracle E-SBCs

Microsoft Lync customers are implementing SIP trunking solutions to reduce telecommunications costs

and improve business agility. Many compa¬nies have lowered their PSTN termination and origination fees

by as much as 70% by replacing conventional TDM PRI/BRI lines with more flexible and cost-effective SIP

trunks. SIP trunking also plays a pivotal role in the migration to Microsoft Lync from other PBX platforms.

Interfacing with a SIP trunking provider can be a challenge. Enterprises often encounter multi-vendor interoperability issues, codec incompatibilities, and service quality challenges when deploying SIP trunks. Oracle Acme Packet enterprise session border controllers (E-SBCs) are specifically designed to accelerate the installation of SIP trunks by overcoming common service interoperability and service quality challenges. E-SBCs serve as the termination point for SIP trunks in a Microsoft Lync or Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) unified communications environment, providing key session control and interworking functions.

ORACLE E-SBCS Microsoft Lync Server 2010 and Lync Server 2013 manages all real-time communications, including instant messaging, VoIP, and audio and video conferencing. Lync Server is used in enterprise premises as well as service provider hosted applications. As part of many Lync Server deployments, Oracle Session Border Controller solutions are used as part of the network infrastructure.

WHY DO I NEED ORACLE TO SUPPORT MY MICROSOFT LYNC SOLUTION?

• Simplicity: Oracle E-SBCs are flexible and enable simplified connectivity to SIP Service Providers reducing time to deployment of SIP trunks to a Microsoft Lync solution.

• Reliability: Oracle E-SBCs are able to load balance traffic between multiple disparate service providers. Should a network outage take place, then the Oracle E-SBCs ensure that voice, video and data traffic connections are maintained.

• Interoperability: Microsoft Lync is often deployed in parallel to an existing IP telephony infrastructure. Oracle E-SBCs enable interoperability enabling an IP PBX and SIP based applications to be integrated with a Microsoft Lync solution.

• Security: When delivering a Microsoft Lync solution it is essential that all traffic traversing the public network is secure. Oracle E-SBCs have robust encryption technology that mitigates against any potential security breaches.

• Flexibility: When remote worker solutions are being deployed it is key that they are delivered simply, securely and cost effectively. Oracle E-SBCs ensure that this happens by operating as a secure termination point for both Microsoft Lync users and SIP trunks.

ORACLE E-SBC VIRTUAL MACHINE EDITION

WHAT IS IT?

The benefit of the Oracle Enterprise Session Border Controller (E-SBC) and OESBC-VME products is that organisations do not compromise on features or design architecture and can deploy an Enterprise SBC (E-SBC) operating system solution in single or multi-site scenarios and on either industry standard server hardware or a choice of suitable hardware platform.

The virtual machine edition (OESBC-VME) can be deployed on any suitable server hardware platform. The OESBC-VME is delivered as software for VMware ESXi and Microsoft hyper-V environments. The OESBC-VME solution enables organisations to build a highly scalable and cost effective E-SBC and SIP infrastructure solution scaling from 25 sessions to a maximum of 250 sessions.

THE CHALLENGE

Many businesses are deploying IP telephony and UC solutions to reduce CAPEX and OPEX and to enhance collaboration and worker productivity. In addition to this, enterprises have requirements to deliver SIP trunking and SIP based application integration and solutions at remote offices and less densely populated branch offices. OESBC-VME is specifically designed to address the unique security, interoperability and reliability challenges businesses often encounter when extending interactive voice, video and unified communications across IP networks. OESBC-VME also helps businesses contain voice transport costs and overcome the unique regulatory compliance challenges associated with IP telephony. The OESBC-VME allows for Oracle’s enterprise E-SBC features to be deployed very economically in these environments.

This approach doesn’t compromise on features or design architecture and deploys a consistent E-SBC operating system in a multi-site infrastructure. for smaller organisations operating within a single site, the OESBC-VME can be deployed very economically delivering high strength carrier grade features and functionality for a fraction of the cost.

The OESBC-VME uses the same operating system as the Acme Packet 3820, 4500 and 6300 series of E-SBCs allowing enterprises to simplify their UC deployment, reduce cost of ownership and build a highly scalable E-SBC and SIP infrastructure, scaling from just 25 sessions to many thousands of sessions. Oracle’s network management application, Oracle Communications Session Delivery Manager, delivers comprehensive management to all Acme Packet appliances allowing for on-the-fly moves, adds and changes to be made.

Oracle E-SBCs are more than just security and inter operability: they also support a full session manager (ESM) feature set such as dial plan management, session routing and enterprise policy enforcement.

EXAMPLE SBC FUNCTIONS

• Interop between Lync, IP-PBX and PSTN elements

• Security between enterprise and PSTN

• Transport protocol (UDP/TCP/TLS) interworking

• Media bypass with Lync

• Media encryption (SRTP/RTP) interworking

• Media transcoding (G.711 to other)

• Load balancing to multiple Lync or IP PBX elements (as well as multiple ITSPs where applicable)

EXAMPLE ESM FUNCTIONS

• Session routing for all calls from PSTN to enterprise users

• Dial plan management for all Lync and IP-PBX elements in enterprise

• Dynamic session routing (i.e. sim ring)

• h.323 / SIP internetworking

• Policy enforcement via Active Directory integration

• CDR collection

MIGRATING FROM TDM TO SIP TRUNKING

Customer can migrate from TDM trunking to SIP trunking with help of E-SBC and ESM

• With TDM trunking, calls to Lync get routed to IP PBX first

• With SIP Trunking and E-SBC/ESM, calls get routed directly

CASE 1: INTEGRATED E-SBC AND ESM WITH ON-PREMISES LYNC

• ESM functions as an integrated part of the E-SBC

• E-SBC performs security, interop and routing functions

• Routing functions includes PSTN calls to and from legacy systems and Lync

– for calls to PSTN, IP-PBX and Lync dial plans, send calls to E-SBC

– for calls from PSTN, E-SBC sends calls to legacy IP-PBX or Lync based on called party info

– E-SBC can also route calls between IP-PBX and Lync

• Lync media bypass supports allows for media path efficiencies

• Customer is using on-premises (vs. O365-D) Lync

• Customer is using (or planning to use) an E-SBC for SIP trunking

• Customer is OK with performing session routing, security, and any necessary interop fixups in the same E-SBC element

• Customer is OK with routing internal sessions (i.e. between Lync and legacy IP-PBX) via the E-SBC element that is typically in the DMZ

CASE 2: STANDALONE ESM WITH ON-PREMISES LYNC

Standalone ESM model

• ESM functions separately to the E-SBC

• E-SBC performs security, interop and routing functions

• ESM element performs routing and advanced dial plan management

– for calls to PSTN, IP-PBX and Lync dial plans, send calls to ESM, which in turn route to E-SBC

– for calls from PSTN, ESM recieves calls from E-SBC and sends calls to legacy IP-PBX or Lync based on called party info

– ESM can also route calls between IP-PBX and Lync

• Lync media bypass supported

• Customer is using on-premises (vs. Office 365-D) Lync

• Customer is using (or planning to use) an E-SBC for SIP trunking

• Customer wants to perform session routing and any necessary interop fixups in an ESM element separate from the E-SBC

• Customer wants to route with internal sessions (i.e. between Lync and legacy IP-PBX) via a standalone ESM element (vs. other methods)

CASE 3: ESM WITH OFFICE 365 (DEDICATED) LYNC

• Office 365 (dedicated) model uses E-SBC and ESM in a manner similar to On-Premises Lync model

– E-SBC used for security and interop

– ESM used for routing

– Integrated for standalone ESM model can be used (see previous two cases)

– All calls between PSTN, legacy IP-PBX and Lync are routed via E-SBC and ESM elements

– Lync media bypass supports allows for media path efficiencies.
