TUE 27 MAR Afternoon arrival in Venice and transfer to Trieste by coach (approx. 2.5 hours) to check in at the 4-star deluxe Starhotels Savoia Excelsior Palace, situated on the seafront and just 5 minutes walk from the Teatro Verdi. A drink will be served on arrival at the hotel, followed by a welcome dinner in a local restaurant.

WED 28 MAR Join your guide for a morning walking tour of the ancient city of Trieste, named Tergeste in pre-Roman times. We begin on the hill of San Giusto where we see the ruins of the Forum, the Basilica and the Tempio. We continue to the churches of Sant’Antonio Nuovo and the Serbo-Orthodox San Spiridione, and then visit the great squares; Piazza della Borsa with its magnificent neo-classical Palazzo, Piazza Verdi where the Teatro Verdi can be seen, and Piazza Unità d’Italia which overlooks the sea. We finish

the tour with a light lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon at leisure and evening concert.

THU 29 MAR Today we take a full-day excursion to the spectacular Castello di Miramare and the nearby town of Aquileia. The castle was the residence of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Hapsburg and his wife Charlotte, and boasts rich collections of paintings, ivory and porcelain, while the stretch of water in front of the castle is a Marine Nature Reserve for the protection of flora and fauna. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant, followed by a visit to Aquileia, where we see the UNESCO listed Roman ruins and the Patriarchal Basilica, with magnificent Byzantine mosaic floors. Return to Trieste to prepare for the evening performance.

The Eternal City is our destination for a memorable opera break with productions presented by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. This tour combines the architectural wonders of Ancient Rome and the city’s Baroque treasures with two performances at the Teatro Costanzi; a double-bill of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, and Puccini’s operatic masterpiece Tosca, set in Rome and premiered at the same theatre in 1900.

WED 11 APR Late afternoon arrival and transfer to the 4-star Grand Hotel Palatino, located in central Rome near the classical monuments of the Colosseum and the Forum. Welcome dinner at the hotel.

THU 12 APR Join your guide for a morning walking tour of Imperial Rome. We visit the vast Colosseum, the largest in the Roman Empire, which was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. We also see the Forum, Capitol Hill and Piazza Venezia. The afternoon is at leisure before transferring this evening to the first performance at Teatro Costanzi.

FRI 13 APR A free day for independent shopping and visits of the city’s many sights.

SAT 14 APR This morning our guided walking tour concentrates on the architecture of Baroque Rome. We see the major sights including Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and the Piazza del Popolo, built as symbols of Catholic power and majesty in the 17th century. The tour will end with lunch in a local restaurant and some time at leisure. In the late afternoon transfer to the theatre for the second opera performance.

MON 7 MAY Today we travel outside of the city for a wine-tasting at a vineyard in the beautiful wine country surrounding Karlsruhe. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant before returning to Karlsruhe for a free evening.

TUE 8 MAY Join your guide for a day excursion to the picturesque city of Heidelberg, where we take a guided walking tour and visit the Castle, via the Heidelberg funicular railway. Lunch is included during the tour. Return to Karlsruhe for the evening at leisure.

WED 9 MAY Today we visit Strasbourg, the capital city of the former Alsace region of France. The city boasts an imposing Gothic cathedral and many medieval churches and half-timbered houses in a blend of French and German influences. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant during the tour before returning to Karlsruhe for a free evening.

THU 10 MAY This morning we visit Ludwigsburg Palace, one of the largest baroque buildings in Europe, and nicknamed ‘the Versailles of Swabia’! Return to Karlsruhe for some time at leisure before the mid-afternoon performance.

FRI 11 MAY Join your guide for a day tour into the picturesque Black Forest region. We begin by driving to the charming city of Baden-Baden where we take a guided walking tour, and continue after lunch in a local restaurant along the scenic road Schwarzwaldhochstraße, one of the oldest and most beautiful in the Black Forest. The Polish National Opera’s performances of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel are directed by Mariusz Treliński who is renowned for extraordinary productions combining the beauty of the music with contemporary interpretation. Our sightseeing excursions place a special emphasis on Poland’s most prolific composer, Fryderyk Chopin, and we also attend a private piano concert in one of Warsaw’s magnificent palaces.

SUN 20 MAY Join your guide for a walking tour of the Old Town, stunningly rebuilt and now a haven for the artistic life of the city. The Royal Route is the most beautiful avenue in Warsaw and we will visit the most important sites of interest here. NEW PRODUCTION

The festival presents a fascinating programme based around musical events of the year 1868. The death of Rossini in that year is marked with a performance of L’italiana in Algeri, which was premiered on 22 May 1813 – the day of Richard Wagner’s birth. We also include the Gala Concert which features works by both Rossini and Wagner (including extracts from Die Meistersinger, first premiered in 1868), performed by Cecilia Bartoli, Rolando Villazón and Jonas Kaufmann. Finally, there is the option to attend a concert performance of Offenbach’s La Périchole, which also celebrated its premiere in 1868.

NEW DESTINATION

We visit the Danish city of Odense, located on the island of Funen and home of the country’s greatest composer Carl Nielsen and author Hans Christian Andersen, for a brand-new fully-staged production of Wagner’s Ring presented by the Odense Symphony Orchestra. Directed by Annechien Koerselman and conducted by Alexander Vedernikov, the cast includes Jennifer Wilson and Catherine Foster as Brünnhilde, and Torsten Kerl as Siegfried.

THU 31 MAY Morning visit to nearby Egeskov Castle, located in southern Funen. The castle was built by Frands Brockenhuus and completed in 1554, and is today considered to be one of Europe’s best preserved moat castles. Lunch is included within the tour, before returning to Odense for a free afternoon and evening.

FRI 1 JUN This morning we return to the Odeon for a backstage tour. The early afternoon is at leisure before the late afternoon performance.

SAT 2 JUN Today we visit the home of composer Carl Nielsen and his wife, Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, which tells the story of two very independent artists who both together and separately had a significant influence on Danish culture. We also see Funen Village, an open-air museum which presents the village as it was in the time of Hans Christian Andersen. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant after the tour, followed by the rest of the day at leisure.

A CARPENTER HOLIDAY

Schwarzenberg, the small Austrian town nestling in the picturesque Bregenzewald in the hinterland of Lake Constance, is the idyllic setting for this annual chamber music festival featuring the songs of Schubert and much else besides. As well as enjoying a range of concerts by some of the world’s leading artists, including Marlis Petersen, Paul Lewis and Ian Bostridge, we will explore the area with sightseeing trips to Lindau and Bregenz and a visit to the Schubert Museum in Hohenems.

TUE 26 JUN Afternoon arrival in Zurich and transfer by coach to Dornbirn (approximately 1.5 hours) to check into the 4-star Four Points by Sheraton Panorama Hotel. Dinner at the hotel.

WED 27 JUN This morning is free for independent exploration of Dornbirn. We then take a cable car ride for lunch at the Panorama Restaurant which boasts spectacular views over Dornbirn to Lake Constance. After lunch we transfer to Schwarzenberg for the afternoon and evening concerts. Dinner will be served at the festival restaurant in between the performances.

THU 28 JUN Join your guide this morning to visit Lindau. We take a walking tour of this island-city, cruise across Lake Constance to Bregenz and return to the hotel by coach. Transfer to Schwarzenberg for the afternoon concert by the Elias Quartet and Paul Lewis, and an evening recital by Ian Bostridge with dinner in between.

FRI 29 JUN Today we visit Hohenems, and the Schubert, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and Walter Legge Museums, the latter containing many interesting letters between Legge and several of the leading conductors and artists with whom

he worked during his time as record producer for EMI. In the afternoon transfer to Schwarzenberg for a recital by Marc-André Hamelin, dinner and the evening concert.

SAT 30 JUN We spend the day in Schwarzenberg, for three concerts at the festival. We visit Mellau for an independent lunch, and dinner this evening will be served in the festival restaurant.

SUN 1 JUL Transfer to Schwarzenberg this morning for the final concert. In the afternoon we make our way to Zurich for the homeward flight.
