Lighting

An opportunity exists to compliment the existing utility lighting with ‘feature’ or ‘decorative’ lighting in some areas. This can be colourful and themed to enliven the night time scene.

Particular features can be lit such as sculptures or trees.

Some seating areas could also be lit to improve night time usage.

Sculptures and Furniture

Seaside themed furniture and seating can be used in some areas to enliven the scene and provide more interesting areas to stop and sit.The existing surfaces could be broken up and replaced with more interesting paving in some locations.

Opportunities exist to use sculptures that respond to the maritime location or refl ect the history of Minehead.

Areas can be designed that have a crossover of functions and could be seats, sculpture or play. This will encourage mixed age groups to enjoy the seafront together.

Planting

Planting will be selected to tolerate the harsh maritime conditions. This could include some tree species which would be best used in clusters, rather than avenues as tree losses would not reduce the effect so much.

Groundcover planting could be colourful and attractive to insects. The use of herbaceous species would allow sand to be cleared more easily each spring.

RHS List of Trees tolerant of full exposure to sea winds

Carpinus betulus AGM (hornbeam) Crataegus (hawthorn) including C. persimilis 'Prunifolia' AGM Cupressus macrocarpa Juniperus scopulorum cultivars Pinus mugo (dwarf mountain pine), P. nigra (European black pine), P. pinaster (maritime pine), P. pinea AGM (stone pine), P. thunbergii (Japanese black pine), Quercus cerris (Turkey oak), Q. ilex AGM (holm oak).
