The Ohio Osteopathic Symposium continues to be the premier osteopathic CME program in Ohio. In collaboration, the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Ohio Osteopathic Foundation have created the Symposium focused on evidence based medicine with great success. We’ve built on that success to present a conference to meet the needs of osteopathic physicians in various specialties.

We invite you to join us for 3.5 days of professional education that highlights our changing health care system and seeks to overall improve the quality of patient care. Sessions will feature interactive lectures and discussions led by leaders in the field. Your participation and support will help stimulate teamwork and networking within our profession.

We look forward to seeing you April 19 – 22 in Columbus.

Martin S. Levine, D.O., President, American Osteopathic AssociationSpecial preSentation“THInk OsTEOPATHICALLy: PRACTICE IT, PROvE IT, PuBLIsH IT AnD PROmOTE IT”

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) installed martin s. Levine, D.O., an AOA board-certified family physician, as its 115th president during its annual business meeting in Chicago in July 2011. Dr. Levine has deep roots in the osteopathic medical profession as one of 20 osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) in his family. As president of the AOA, he follows in the footsteps of his father, Howard m. Levine, D.O., who served as president of the AOA from 1997 to 1998.

A distinguished fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, Dr. Levine has a family practice in Bayonne, n.J., and Jersey City, n.J. He serves as associate dean for educational development at the Touro College of Osteopathic medicine in the Harlem neighborhood of new york City. Dr. Levine also serves as discipline chief of family medicine and associate professor of clinical family medicine at the university

of new England College of Osteopathic medicine’s new Jersey Clinical Campus based at seton Hall university school of Health and medical sciences. After earning his osteopathic medical degree from what is now the kirksville (mo.) College of Osteopathic medicine-A.T. still university, Dr. Levine completed his internship and residency training at kennedy memorial Hospital in stratford, n.J., where he served as chief resident. Dr. Levine has been the recipient of many honors and awards, including being named to the Best Doctor listing in new york magazine every year since 1999 and nJAOPs Physician of the year. In addition, Dr. Levine has served as a sports medicine physician for Boston and new york marathons for more than 25 years, as well as for Olympic and professional sports teams. Andrea Amalfitano, D.O., Ph.D.J .o. WatSon, D.o. MeMorial lecture “ExPAnDIng THE FROnTIERs OF OsTEOPATHIC REsEARCH TO ADDREss 21sT CEnTuRy mEDICAL nEEDs”

Andrea Amalfitano D.O., Ph.D. is currently Professor of Pediatrics, microbiology and molecular genetics, and holds the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Endowed Chair in the College of Osteopathic medicine at michigan state university. Dr. Amalfitano received his Doctorate of Philosophy in 1989, as well his Osteopathic medical Degree in 1990 at michigan state university. He then completed Internal medicine and Pediatrics Residency training at mt. Clemens general Hospital in michigan, and the mayo Clinic in Rochester minnesota, before completing his medical genetics Fellowship training in Human medical genetics at the university of michigan. Dr. Amalfitano has been a Fellow of the American Board of medical genetics since 1996.

Dr. Amalfitano became Assistant Professor at Duke university medical Center in the Departments of Pediatrics (Division of medical genetics) and microbiology in 1996. While there, he became an expert in diagnosing and treating patients affected by any number of rare and sometimes devastating genetic diseases and established a successful independent research effort focused on engineering viruses for use in clinical medicine. Dr. Amalfitano co-led the first-in-man-study of a novel therapy for a muscular dystrophy, a drug that was infused into babies dying from a rare genetic disease known as Pompe disease. As a direct result of that pioneering effort, that same drug now known as “myozyme” has been approved for human use in Pompe patients world-wide.

In 2005, Dr. Amalfitano was very pleased to accept the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Endowed Chair, an honor that allowed him to return to his alma mater, michigan state university where he continues to pursue his goal of translating basic research efforts into practical solutions for many of today’s most difficult medical problems. This is now coupled with his efforts to teach medical genetics and virology to all msu medical students as well as a number of graduate students from a number of disciplines. Dr. Amalfitano also continues to see children and adults with common and rare forms of genetic disease as both an Inpatient consultant at sparrow Hospital in Lansing, michigan, as well as part of the msu Health Team in the Department of Pediatrics.

For more than ten years Jack Brose, D.O. has served as the dean of the Ohio university Heritage College of Osteopathic medicine. His leadership has guided the college through a decade of extraordinary growth, including a 40 percent increase in enrollment, redevelopment of the curriculum, and expansion of the college’s system of teaching hospitals across the state – the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) has doubled under his deanship. Dr. Brose initiated a strategic planning process in 2009 for the college’s next 10 years that culminated last April with the announcement of the $105 million gift the college received from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations. The gift has led to transformational changes that are taking place now, such as a new central Ohio extension campus and new Athens-based research and care facilities. These advancements support the college’s mission to establish itself as a national model for primary care education and service, and to become a leading research institution.

In 1982, Dr. Brose came to the college as an assistant professor of family medicine and was promoted to full professor in 1993. He has served as director of the Pre-doctoral Family medicine Fellowship Program, associate chair of the Department of Family medicine, assistant dean for Educational Development and Research, and Assistant Dean for Clinical Research. Prior to his tenure at Ou-HCOm, Dr. Brose earned his undergraduate degree in biology from gettysburg College in 1972 and attended the university of north Texas Health science Center at Fort Worth‒Texas College of Osteopathic medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathic medicine degree in 1976. He completed a residency in family practice in 1979 at the scott Air Force medical Center in Illinois, where he was chief resident from 1978 to 1979, and completed a Teaching and Research Fellowship at The Ohio state university College of medicine in Columbus.

Dr. Brose has received 26 “outstanding instructor awards” at Ou-HCOm. He also served on The Ohio state university College of medicine faculty and was named “Faculty of the year” by the Osu Family Practice residents. In 2001, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians named him as “Ohio Educator of the year.” Having served as the chairman of the Ohio Council of medical school Deans for two terms, Dr. Brose has been commended for bringing together Ohio’s medical schools to advocate on behalf of medical education in the Ohio general Assembly. He also is the author of numerous academic and research publications, including a book entitled guide to Ekg Interpretation. Dr. Brose announced plans to assume a new leadership role within Ohio university when he retires as dean as of July 1, 2012. He will continue his faculty role at the medical school under the university’s faculty early retirement program. He also will assume new responsibilities within the Office of the Provost and will advise on the development of the Ou-HCOm extension campus as well as other medicine and allied health-related programs and initiatives across Ohio.

CME CreditThis program has been approved for 28.5 hours of Category 1A CME credit from the American Osteopathic Association. The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine will submit your credit hours to the AOA and provide attendance certificates for your records. To receive credit, you will need to sign in at the registration table upon arrival and complete the CME Verification Request Form before departing the Symposium. A breakdown of credit hours available by day will be posted on the www.oucom.ohiou.edu/oos/ web site and available on-site. Credits cannot be issued to physicians failing to sign in.

An additional 2.5 category 1-A credits are available should you choose to complete an Outcomes Assessment Survey which will be emailed to you within 90 days after the Symposium. Credits may be awarded in the following areas: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Opthal-mology, Dermatology, Orthopedic Surgery, Emergency Medicine and Surgery.

The Resident Leadership Workshop is sponsored by ORAC and is only open to residents in the CORE. There is no charge for workshop attendance only. Cancellations, Refunds and GrievancesRefunds for cancellation will be granted in full if notification is received by April 15, 2012. Special Events House of DelegatesThe OOA House of Delegates will meet April 20 – 21. Office Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) Certification: Pre-registration requiredin conjunction with the american osteopathic academy of addiction Medicine, we are pleased to offer The Physicians’ Clinical Support System - Buprenorphine Half and Half course.*

The first half of the course includes 3.75 hours of CD-based training. You will receive a CD containing training on substance abuse treatment, opioids, and the use of buprenorphine in the treatment of opioid use disorders from office-based practices. An examination on the CD must be printed and successfully completed as part of the process to obtain a certificate for prescribing buprenorphine. The other half of the course is 4.25 hours of face-to-face, classroom-style training. The training focuses on specifics of treating patients with opioid use disorders in office-based settings and clinical vignettes to help trainees think through “real life” experiences in opioid use disorders treatment. The combined CD and face-to-face training will provide the required 8 hours needed to obtain the certificate to prescribe buprenorphine in office-based treatment of opioid disorders.
