Welcome to the New ICE Exchange!

The Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) is pleased to invite you to the first-ever ICE Exchange. Building on the best elements of last year’s annual conference, the ICE Exchange reflects what is valued by our attendees: peer interaction and insight into other credentialing organizations’ success. This year’s event will allow you to both share and learn industry trends and best practices for enhancing credentialing organizations. This two-way flow of information ensures that ideas and advice are always fresh.

For the 2013 ICE Exchange, we are creating both formal and informal opportunities for collaboration among leaders in credentialing: roundtable discussions, solutions-oriented time with exhibiting partners and attendees, and diverse educational sessions designed to meet your needs as an innovator in the credentialing industry.

Exchange HighlightsOpening Plenary Session:

Leapfrogging to Breakthrough InnovationTuesday, November 12 9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

Keynote Speaker: Soren Kaplan

We all know innovation is critical for success. While breakthroughs may seem simple for companies like Apple, creating “the next big thing” in credentialing isn’t easy. Innovation today requires a creative understanding of emerging trends, customer needs, and new possibilities for learning, development, and

certification. Through a highly interactive presentation, you’ll gain counterintuitive strategies and practical tools for challenging mindsets and creating innovations that make a real difference for your organization, your stakeholders, and those you serve.

Soren Kaplan is the author of the Wall Street Journal bestselling book Leapfrogging. As a leading expert in business innovation, he works with companies including the American Council on Exercise, Kaiser Permanente, Disney, PayPal, Red Bull, Colgate-Palmolive, and Medtronic, among others. Soren previously led the innovation group at Hewlett-Packard and is an Adjunct Professor within the Imagineering Academy at Breda University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands. ICE Research SummitThursday, November 148:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Join members of ICE’s Research and Development Committee at the 2013 Research Summit. Learn about their latest research in continuing competence, management practices, eligibility criteria, innovative item types, construct definition, and ICE’s latest certification benchmarking survey.

NEW! Leverage Quick Education in the Learning LoungeWho Should Attend? The ICE Exchange is ideal for credentialing professionals of all levels including CEOs and executive staff, program administrators, marketers, educators, psychometricians, board directors, and public members. Our educational sessions and conference activities offer valuable learning and networking opportunities. CEOs and Executive Directors should consider this conference an opportunity to train your future staff leaders. Bring additional staff members to cover the sessions you are unable to attend.

The ICE Learning Lounge is a dynamic environment where you can engage in content as it fits your schedule. Designed with areas for peer-to-peer learning, mini presentations by invited experts, an ePoster gallery, and more, the ICE Learning Lounge will be a can’t-miss experience at this year’s ICE Exchange.

More information is available online at credentialingexcellence.org/exchange.

Chief Executives: Don’t forget to include your job title when registering for this year’s conference! ICE will host two invitation-only events for our C-level attendees. The first will be a special concurrent session with our opening keynote speaker, Soren Kaplan, in which he will dive deeper into his discussion with executives and tease out applicable concepts for the credentialing field. The second will be a CEO Special Interest Group (SIG) facilitated to specifically address key strategic issues facing credentialing program executives.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPSInterested in diving deeper into a topic than an hour-long session will allow? Register for a pre-conference workshop on Monday, November 11. These workshops are designed to increase interaction among participants and speakers, allow more time for Q&A, and promote attendees’ engagement with the topic at hand. You will meet professionals with similar interests during the session, and together you can compare perspectives and deepen your awareness of the topic that’s relevant to you. This year’s workshop topics include: Test Security, Marketing, Certification 101, and Introduction to NCCA. (Additional registration is required to attend).

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS (SIGs)ICE Exchange’s SIGs continue to be one of the most popular aspects of the conference. Attending a SIG is a great way to enhance your conference experience by interacting directly with other attendees, sharing ideas and experiences, asking questions, and engaging in an informal, open dialogue around a particular topic that you can continue to explore all week through ongoing networking and concurrent sessions. Join us in the Learning Lounge November 12 and 13 for our SIG topics including: International, Marketing & Social Media, Test Security and Continuing Competence & Recertification.

Page 5: ICE Exchange Registration Brochure

Get Up and Toot Your Horn: Let the World Know About the Value of Your CertificationYour organization’s current health and future prospects depend on demand for professionals who hold your credential. That demand exists because important audiences know what you do and why your credential has value: the general public, employers, and legislators. Expert panelists will offer advice and engage the audience in a discussion on dealing with the media, cultivating relationships with employers, and helping lawmakers and policymakers appreciate the ways that certification promotes the public interest.

Teach an Item Writer to Fish We have all heard the Chinese proverb Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. The same is true for item writers: Revise an item writer’s work, you fix the problem for today. Teach an item writer how to fix his or her own work, and you train him or her for a lifetime.

Highly-Anticipated Sessions

Green Light-Red Light: When to Start and When to Stop a Certification ProgramDecisions regarding the development of new programs or retirement of existing programs are among the most difficult judgments certification organizations make. Though sometimes emotionally charged, decisions must be objective and based on reliable data. Speakers will delineate in detail, decision-making algorithm for the process of determining whether or not to develop a new program and discuss the process of impartially deciding when to discontinue a program.

Is Your Certification Board Competent? The recruitment of highly capable leaders is paramount to a board’s success. Some organizations focus on demographics or stakeholder interests, while ignoring essential leadership competencies. Two executives will describe the processes used by their boards to define and assess key competencies. They will also define essential board competencies.
