to lightAs a leader in the home DIY industry, Builders believes that it has a responsibility to offer its customers the latest eco-friendly technologies to help make South African households and businesses operate more efficiently with minimal environmental impact. One of the initiatives to help Builders achieve this aim is the Ellies Green Stand, a store-within-a-store concept where green technologies from Ellies are highlighted and explained to customers.

    brings eco-friendlyeco-friendlytechnologiestechnologies

The first Ellies Green Stand is a result of an exclusive partnership between Builders and Ellies, which was launched at Builders Warehouse in Strubens Valley in December 2011. Before we launched the Ellies Green Stand, eco-friendly technologies did not have an absolute presence in the market. Ellies was willing to address this gap in the market and promote their green household products within our stores. From our side, we wanted to offer our customers a platform showcasing innovative and environmentally friendly alternatives that would help address the issue of ensuring sustainable energy generation, which is one of our countrys major problems.

The Ellies Green Stands, that were soon rolled out in other Builders Warehouse and Builders Express stores, sell exclusive product ranges designed to save either electricity or water, measure energy consumption, assist in energy management or create alternative energy sources. Each Ellies stand is manned by a highly trained, knowledgeable salesperson who can help Builders customers navigate their way around these often daunting new technologies. We have computers at each stand that assist in calculating the energy needs of our customers, while LCD screens highlight new products. The Ellies stands provide you with a single contact point for all your energy-saving requirements.

Ellies has also recently partnered with Aurora in the UK, an international and dynamic energy saving solution provider, to ensure that the Ellies Green Stands always showcase the latest innovations in green technologies. The success of these Green Stands can be attributed to a number of factors. For one, the rising cost of electricity in our country has definitely caused customers to look for more sustainable options. A price parity is beginning to form, as the cost of LEDs slowly decreases and the cost of non-environmentally friendly light bulbs increases. We have deliberately maintained a low margin to ensure that this green technology is affordable for our customers, and to help South Africa become more energy efficient. In addition, the Ellies name is a familiar and trusted brand among consumers that promote products of a high quality.

Other retailers, seeing the success of the Ellies Green Stands, have now followed suit and are also promoting a greener product offering, which means even more consumers are using eco-friendly technologies. The rollout of the Ellies Green Stand is our first step in helping to build a greener Africa. Through Builders partnership with Ellies, we are making strides in addressing some of South Africas key developmental and sustainability issues, namely job creation and energy efficiency, while also shifting mindsets about energy consumption on the continent. Our aim going forward is to continue to drive down the price of green technology and to work closely with Eskom and Ellies to drive new technologies and innovation through the Green Stand infrastructure.

WE HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO GIVE BACK.R90 million spent on 2 schools in 3 years. It takes a village to bring up a child. It takes an enlightened company to join hands with a nation thirsting for quality education and build a school, Meetse-A-Bophelo in Mamelodi, designed to improve the performance of children keen to learn. As part of its school building project, ArcelorMittal South Africa is spending million of rands providing new technologically advanced infrastructure. The second school, Nelson Mandela Primary, was handed over to the people of Mthatha in July 2013. This is yet more evidence that we have what it takes to give back. We are ArcelorMittal South Africa.
