Throughout this presentation, I’m going to talk about ways you can protect your children online no matter how they access the internet.

We’re going to look at how children access the internet, what they do online, and what you can do and they can do to prevent or allay any problems.

In a relatively short amount of time, the number of devices that children can access the internet from has increased dramatically! Children go online from:

School computers;Their own computers;Friends’ computers;Laptops and tablets;Mobile phones;MP3 players;E‐readers;Games consoles;Handheld gaming devices.

Technology changes all the time and children are constantly finding the newest websites, apps and gadgets.

It’s up to us to teach them the basic rules of Internet safety so they can use all of these responsibly.

Although I can’t go through every website or app your children are on and tell you how to use it, I can help you find that information.

Safety and Security Issues

• Inappropriate content• Online privacy• Sexting• Online sexual solicitation• Online bullying

The good news is that most children are not getting into trouble online, but there are still risks to consider. The issues we’re going to discuss are not specific to just one device or website. No matter what your children like to do online, they face the following issues:

Page 8: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

Inappropriate ContentLet’s start by discussing the inappropriate things your child may encounter online. The Internet opens up an entire world of information and images, some of which you don’t want your children to see. Your child might come across content that features:• Pornography;• Excessive violence;• Hate speech;• Risky or illegal behaviours.

Page 9: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

How to respond

• Don’t frighten them.• Listen attentively.• Tell them it’s not their fault.• Answer questions.• Help them report it.

Page 10: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

What they should do•Turn off the screen.•Tell a trusted adult.•Report the content to the website or app where they found it.

Page 11: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

Don’t postIn addition to talking to children about what to do if they see inappropriate content, you’ll also want to talk to children about not posting it themselves. Inappropriate information your child shouldn’t share online includes:•Illegal or inappropriate behavior;•Offensive language;•Threats of violence;• Hate speech.

Page 12: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

What you can do

•Establish expectations for online behavior – Let them know exactly what you think is unacceptable. •Set consequences for inappropriate posts.•Talk about appropriate usernames ‐ This is especially true for children who play in virtual worlds or any children who play games online.•Review comments and pictures ‐ Check out what they’re posting and ask them to take down anything inappropriate.•Talk about what their friends are posting.

Online Privacy

You may also be concerned about how much information your children are sharing online. Some are fine like sharing pictures of family and friends (with permission) or talking in game to their friends. However, there are certain kinds of personal information that you definitely don’t want your children sharing.

Risks of sharing personal information

Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to:• Identity theft• Online scams• Hacking

You may think it’s safer for your child to lie about their name and age online, but that’s not always true!

Page 16: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

What you can do

• Establish rules about what they can share• Learn about reporting options• Help them set privacy settings• Help them create strong passwords• Talk about friends lists

Bullying + Technology = Online Bullying

• How many of you have heard about online bullying? What do you know about it?

Online bullying is exactly what it sounds like ‐bullying through technology like mobile phones, social media sites and online games.

Page 18: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

Examples of online bullying

• Sending mean texts• Photoshopping pictures• Creating fake profiles• Posting fight videos• Spreading rumours and gossip• Posting embarrassing pictures• Sending threatening or harassing comments

Page 19: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

Differences between online bullying and bullying

• Spreads faster than in‐person bullying because of instant online communication

• Wider audience because it can easily be sent to a potentially unlimited amount of people

• Follows children home so they can’t get away from it.

All of this can undermine your child’s sense of security. They don’t feel a safe at school – because online bullies are frequently classmates and other peers –and they don’t feel safe at home because the bullying is happening 24/7 online.

Video games

• Many of your children will play videogames, however, it’s important to know which videogames are appropriate for your child.

• Let’s have a look at the PEGI website to view their ratings and then we’ll discuss specific examples of games.

Grand Theft Auto

• It’s important to realise that this isn’t just a game where children can ignore the bad things and drive a car around…

• We’re going to watch an unavoidable scene in the game. It has bad language and violence.

Page 29: Online Safety.pptx [Read-Only] - Longwell Green Primary ...€¦ · Sharing personal information online is a security risk because it leaves your children open to: •Identity theft

Call of Duty

• Realistic violence – concerns that it can cause desensitisation to violence.

• Bad language.• Online content isn’t moderated. If your child has a headset that they use to communicate, this opens up a lot of risks.
