TRIAD CORNER

The Danvers TRIAD Council is a partnership which includes the Sheriff and

District Attorney of Essex County, the Danvers Police and Fire Chiefs, the Council

on Aging and supportive services, and seniors. Here are some safety tips to

remember while shopping:

Try not to carry a large wallet or purse. Take only the credit/debit cards and cash you

expect to use.

Make sure you receive your card back after each transaction.

Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers and Customer Service contact numbers

at home in the event the cards are lost or stolen.

Keep cash in a front pocket to minimize the opportunity of being pick-pocketed.

Take note of where you parked your car. Always park in well-lit areas at night, or near

other vehicles during the day.

Don’t leave shopping bags or packages in your vehicle in plain sight.

If you must take them with you, always lock them in the trunk!

Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At certain times of the year,

“con-artists may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking

your money or belongings.

Memory Café is coming to the Senior Center! A Memory Café is a welcoming place for people

with forgetfulness or other changes in their thinking and for their family and friends.

Memory Cafés meet at a variety of places in Massachusetts communities. Each memory café is

different. Some cafés invite guest artists, some offer information about memory changes and

all cafés are about relaxing and chatting. All cafés share these goals:

• To help guests feel comfortable and to know they are not alone.

• To talk with others who understand what you are going through.

• To leave behind limitations and instead focus on strengths.

• To enjoy the company of others.

• To explore something new.

Join us for refreshments, activities and conversation in a welcoming place for caregivers and

individuals living with memory changes Tuesday, December 11th 1:30-3pm. RSVP requested

but not required. For further information, contact Judith Ryan 978-762-0208

Need Help with Your Medicare Plan Comparisons during Open Enrollment?

It’s that time of year again! If you are enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a

Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO/PPO), you should be mailed an information packet from your

plan by the end of September. It is important to understand and save this information

because it explains the changes in your plan for 2019. Premiums, deductibles, co-pays and the

drugs covered by your plan can change significantly.

During the annual Medicare Open Enrollment, you will have a chance to CHANGE your plan for

next year. SHINE Counselors can help you understand your plan changes, other options you

may have, and even enroll you in a new plan during Open Enrollment from October 15 through

December 7th!

Trained SHINE counselors offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and

related health insurance programs. Call the Danvers Council on Aging at 978-762-0208 to

schedule a phone consultation or in-person appointment. For other SHINE related matters, call

your Regional SHINE Headquarters at Mystic Valley Elder Services: 781-388-4845.

SUPPORT SERVICES

Social Seniors

Supportive Day Program

We continue to accept applications for

participation in this unique program. If you

or someone you know may be interested

please contact Judith Ryan at

(978) 762-0208, for more information. We

are happy to offer a risk “FREE” trial day

and financial assistance may be available to Danvers residents 60 and

older through the generosity of the Clara & Harvey Pillsbury Foundation.

SCAM ALERT…

The Town of Danvers has received reports concerning discount chimney sweep scams. In an

effort to keep our residents informed, and thus reducing the number of victims, the Town of

Danvers is alerting residents to the following scam:

Discount Chimney Sweeping:

In this scam someone receives a flier in the mail for a discount chimney sweep (if its cost

under $75 it’s probably too good to be true). The company will come to your house and go on

the roof to check your chimney. They will then notify you that the chimney is about to collapse

or leak carbon monoxide into the house—they may even show you fake photos. The company will

inform you that they have the right equipment in the truck to fix the problem. You will be

asked to pay for services immediately (around $2000-$3000). Often, there will be large

damage to your chimney and possibly your home after this scam.

What should you do?

Be alert, if something seems too good to be true, it usually is. First, contact the company that

performs routine service on your chimney, furnace or burner and get their opinion. If you do

not have a regular technician, please contact the Town of Danvers Inspection Services

Department at 978-777-0001, ext. 3062.

Before getting lunch, please inform your server of any allergies you may have.
