Men’s Club– Please join us this month on Monday, May 20th at 5:30pm.
The speaker will be Danvers Resident Chris Slavin is an advocate,
educator, writer, and speaker who travels the world with her mobility
assistance dog, Earle. Together they look for adventures, large and small,
every day. Chris is a believer in possibility and the ability of each
individual to actualize change in themselves while encouraging others.
Using travel and relationships, Chris shares her story while listening and
learning from the life experiences of others. A traveler before sustaining
a spinal cord injury as a competitive adaptive snowboarder, Chris pursued
elite-level monoskiing for eight years before retiring from ski racing
after a second spinal cord injury. A desire to return to independent travel
after being partnered with Earle has led her to a sense of independence
and freedom that she thought she had lost. The menu is to be determined.

annually! Join us for this free workshop where a representative from Mass. Senior Medicare Patrol
Program provides us with the tools to become better educated and engaged health care consumers to
help protect ourselves and our love ones from Medicare fraud and deceptive marketing techniques.
5/15 Did you know that 30-55% of people have been found to be malnourished when they are admitted to hospi-
tals? Would you know how to identify signs of malnutrition in a friend or family member? Malnutrition is not the
same as being underweight – it could be caused by a vitamin/mineral deficiency or an excess of nutrients in your
diet. Malnutrition can contribute to complications during and after surgery and increase the length of hospital
stays for people with chronic health conditions. Presented by a registered dietician from North Shore Elder
Services. Come learn more about how you can improve health outcomes for yourself or a loved one and get a free
screening!
5/22 People with hearing loss find themselves casual (challenged) observers instead of active partici-
pants. Hearing loss often occurs in a slow and subtle progression. At some point, many of us start to
recognize, we are asking people to repeat themselves more often or we are trying to “fake it until we
make it” and most often it is our significant other or someone who is close to us who will recognize we
are struggling to understand speech clearly. Presented by Sue Stein of Mass Audiology.
There is no charge for this event, but if you plan on attending, please call 978-762-0208 or sign up at the
front desk for this presentation so that we can plan appropriate space.

SOCIAL DAY PROGRAM
May 2019, Vol. 35 Issue 5 Page 11
Operation Troop Support Items for May—In keeping with the growing needs of our
troops, we will be collecting these needed items for the month of May: Suntan lotions,
skin lotions, deodorants & foot powder and as always personal size hygiene items.
Social Seniors
Supportive Day Program
We continue to accept applications for
participation in this unique program. If you
or someone you know may be interested
please contact Judith Ryan at
(978) 762-0208, for more information. We
are happy to offer a risk “FREE” trial day
and financial assistance may be available to Danvers residents 60 and older through the
generosity of the Clara & Harvey Pillsbury Foundation.
Memory Café is coming to the Senior Center! A Memory Café is a welcoming place for people
with forgetfulness or other changes in their thinking and for their family and friends.
Memory Cafés meet at a variety of places in Massachusetts communities. Each memory café is
different. Some cafés invite guest artists, some offer information about memory changes and
all cafés are about relaxing and chatting. All cafés share these goals:
• To help guests feel comfortable and to know they are not alone.
• To talk with others who understand what you are going through.
• To leave behind limitations and instead focus on strengths.
• To enjoy the company of others.
• To explore something new.
Join us for refreshments, activities and conversation in a welcoming place for caregivers and
individuals living with memory changes Tuesday, May 14th, 1:30-3pm. RSVP requested but
not required. For further information, contact Judith Ryan 978-762-0208

SCAM ALERT: SOCIAL SECURITY WARNS PUBLIC ABOUT Caller ID “Spoofing”
In recent months, Social Security has issued several warnings about new phone call scams.
The calls often display a caller ID of 1-800-772-1213 which is the real Social Security
Customer Service number; other calls may display the real Social Security Fraud Hotline
number on the caller ID screen. These calls are scams using caller ID “spoofing” – showing
false caller ID’s.
In some cases, the caller says that Social Security does not have all of your personal
information on file. Other callers claim Social Security needs additional information so the
agency can increase your benefit payment, or that Social Security will terminate your benefits
if they do not confirm your information. Callers sometimes state that your Social Security
number is at risk of being deactivated or suspended because it’s connected to a serious crime.
Any threatening phone call from Social Security is fraudulent and you should just hang up. If
you want to report a suspicious call, you can call the Fraud Hotline at 800-269-0271, Monday
through Friday, 10am to 4pm EST.
If you have questions about suspicious calls from Social Security or Medicare, or other
health insurance issues, trained SHINE counselors offer free, confidential counseling on all
aspects of Medicare and related health insurance programs. Call the Senior Center to schedule
a phone consultation or in-person appointment.
