TRIAD CORNER

The Danvers TRIAD Council is a partnership which includes the Sheriff and

District Attorney of Essex County, the Danvers Police and Fire Chiefs, the Council

on Aging and supportive services and seniors.

Here are a few tips to keep you and your grandchildren safe:

Clean out your medicine cabinet and keep only current medications that are being used.

Old, outdated prescriptions should be properly disposed of. Even old medications can be

dangerous and addictive.

If you notice that money, jewelry or other personal possessions are missing on a

frequent basis after your grand-children have been visiting, confront them and their parents.

It could be an indication of a drug abuse problem. Keep chemicals safely locked away and out of

the reach of children. Inhaling chemicals is dangerous and can cause brain damage or death.

Never allow your home to be used for serving alcohol to anyone under the age of 21. You

can be criminally, financially and civilly liable if anyone gets hurt after drinking in your home.

Don’t buy or provide alcohol for anyone underage.

If you feel that your grandchildren are being abused in any way, seek help from a

professional, a clergy person, or anyone else who can provide assistance.

Today’s grandchildren are tomorrow’s leaders. Let’s make sure we keep them, and

ourselves, safe.

Watch for the November DCAT program “Senior Driver Safety”

Travel Chef—Tuesday, October 15th—American Carvery. Herbed Roasted Turkey, pan gravy,

baked potato with sour cream, whole buttered green beans, pound cake with mixed berry sauce

& parker house roll. Suggested donation of $2.25 per person. Reservations by Friday, October

all cafés are about relaxing and chatting. All cafés share these goals:

• To help guests feel comfortable and to know they are not alone.

• To talk with others who understand what you are going through.

• To leave behind limitations and instead focus on strengths.

• To enjoy the company of others.

• To explore something new.

Join us for refreshments, activities and conversation in a welcoming place for caregivers and

individuals living with memory changes Tuesday, October 8th, 1:30-3pm. RSVP requested but

not required. For further information, contact Judith Ryan 978-762-0208

If you did not receive a new card, or cannot find

your new card, you should:

Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. Request a new card; there might be a problem that needs to be corrected, like

updating your mailing address.

You can also sign in to your MyMedicare.gov account. If you don’t have an account yet,

visit MyMedicare.gov to create one. You can sign in to see your Medicare Number or

print an official copy of your card.

Guard your Medicare card like it’s a credit card. Let your doctor, hospital, or other health

care provider see your new card as soon as you receive it. Old Medicare cards with Social

Security Numbers should be shredded.

MEDICARE SCAM ALERT

SHINE (Serving the Health insurance Needs of Everyone) Medicare Counseling Programs are

being bombarded with calls and ads for “free” genetic cancer screening kits. Agents claim

Medicare will pay for them… and they are making cold calls to convince you to buy one.

THE OFFER IS FALSE! ! Medicare DOES NOT pay for mail order kits for cancer screening.

Medicare covers many genetic tests to diagnose cancer once symptoms are present, but

there is only ONE test to screen (for colorectal cancer). Only screening by a physician will

be covered by Medicare!

Report sales complaints to SHINE (1-800-243-4636, press 3) or the Senior Medicare

Patrol Project (978-946-1200). Do not be scammed!!

SHINE Medicare Counseling Part 2

It is almost here…Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment It’s that time of the year again! If you have a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare

Advantage Plan (HMO, PPO), you should have received information from your plan by the end of

September. It is important to read and save this information because it explains the changes

in your plan for 2020.

During Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment (October 15 – December 7), you will have a chance

to review/change your plan for next year. If you never had a drug plan, this is your opportuni-

ty to join one. SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone….on Medicare) coun-

selors can help you understand your plan changes, as well as explain other options you may have.

Appointments are limited, so make your appointment soon.*

Trained SHINE counselors offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and

related health insurance programs. To make an appointment with the SHINE counselor here,

please contact the Danvers Council on Aging at 978-762-0208.

*A special note about Annual Open Enrollment this year:

Medicare is rolling out a completely new Medicare planfinder on Medicare.gov on October

1st. Just before Open Enrollment.

If you plan to meet a SHINE counselor, there are a few things you can do to make the

transition go more smoothly:

1. Medicare Card and any other insurance cards

2. A printout from your pharmacy of your prescriptions from the last 12 months

(preferably sorted alphabetically, rather than by date)

3. Although it is not necessary to create a Medicare.gov account, having one will help

make the process more efficient and less frustrating. Therefore, it would be

helpful if you could do one of the following:

- Create an account on Medicare.gov (bring your user name and password to your

SHINE appointment)

- If you do not have access to a computer, or need assistance with creating an ac

count, contact the Senior Center to learn what you will need to create

account during your appointment.

Thank you for helping us to help you! We will need to be patient together!

DANVERS PEOPLE TO PEOPLE FOOD PANTRY

October 2019, Vol. 35 Issue 10 Page 22

Are you expecting?

No, not a baby….an emergency!! The very nature of an emergency is something that is not

expected, but you can plan for it. My parents lost their home in the Mother’s Day flood a

dozen or more years ago. I can tell you firsthand that they could have benefited from the list

I have compiled from the Red Cross and AARP websites. This is not meant to scare you, but

for you to keep in mind some items you may want to have at the ready should you need to leave

your home in a hurry. Did you remember; your medications, personal paperwork, pet food, cash,

cell phone charger etc.? There is a list at the front desk that may be helpful to have…even if

you never have to use it.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the school supplies for our Back to School Backpack

Program. We assisted 90+ families and we couldn’t even sharpen our pencil without you!

The People to People Food Pantry is asking for $15 Gift Card donations to Market Basket or

Stop & Shop for our Thanksgiving Turkey drive. This change was made last year because we do

not have enough space in our refrigerators to store so many birds, and the gift card allows our

shoppers to buy to meet their dietary needs. If you would like to buy a gift card for donation,

you can bring it to the Senior Center and ask for Maureen at the front desk. We can provide a

receipt if requested.

Stop & Shop is a great community partner

providing financial support and donating food

on a regular basis to the Pantry. Our thanks

to Danvers Store Manager, Pat Hickey and his

staff; Erica Bomba, Dave Kawiecki, Adam

Bushway and Bob Medeiros (pictured Left to

Right) for their generosity and hard work.

As the Holiday Season approaches, the Pantry will also be looking for folks who want to sponsor

a child. We will be providing gifts for young children and $50 (or $25) Target gift cards for

high school aged kids. Call the Pantry to sign up to help our families in need this

Christmas – (978)739-4188.

GROUP SUPPORT

LOW VISION GROUP

This group is for those experiencing any type of vision loss

ranging from a small degree of vision loss to those who are

totally blind. You do not need to be a senior, or live in Dan-

vers, to attend this group. Monthly meetings are held at

10:30 am on the 2nd Thursday.*

*In October, we will meet on 10/17, the 3rd Thursday instead.

Sometimes Vision Loss can come on suddenly, such as after

a stroke. Very often, as in the case with Macular Degenera-

tion, losing sight happens gradually, along with acceptance

of the condition. Perhaps you, or someone you know, are

overwhelmed by the struggle to do things as you once did

when vision was 20/20. Most likely there is at least one thing

you wish you could do more easily.

On October 17th, bring your questions, problems needing to

be solved, and dreams of an invention that make life easier.

If you have any tools or tricks you’ve learned lately, please

come and share them with us!

CHALLENGES OF LIVING ALONE (CLA) - 4th Thursday/mo 1-2pm

The CLA group is open to anyone looking for support in successful solo-

survival. It’s a place to meet new acquaintances and build friendships

while sharing common experiences.

Mental Health awareness week is the 2nd week of October. At our next meeting, on October 24th, we will discuss why talking about mental health is important. We’ll talk about how to identify symptoms, positive ways to cope and care for ourselves, and who to call in a crisis.

Our groups are
