Welcome June and the Texas heat! It looks like we are in for a hot sum-
mer!! DAPA welcomed paralegals from around the states for a blazing
Region II Spring Meeting on Saturday June 2nd. Delegates, several Board
members, and other DAPA members met with our Region II Director,
Mianne Besser, who flew in from Denver, Colorado, to host the meeting.
Important NFPA business was discussed throughout the day followed by an
evening social held at Ojeda's Restaurant.
Calling all Sustaining Members!! Get ready because next month DAPA is
holding our 15th Annual Sustaining Member EXPO!! This is one of our
most heavily attended events each year and our way of thanking our Sustain-
ing Members for supporting DAPA!! So DAPA vendors have your bling
ready and DAPA members don't forget to bring a big stack of your business cards to this event and get
ready to have some fun, get to know and support our Sustaining Members and win some fun prizes!!
This month's General Membership Meeting will be held on June 19th and features speaker Elza Manza-
nares, who is a Partner with Akerman LLP. Ms. Manzanares is an experienced international trade attorney
who advises clients on U.S. and international regulations governing the import and export of goods and
services, software and technology. Ms. Manzanares also advises clients on import regulations administered
by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Just a reminder, the Belo will be closed during the month
of August for renovations.
The North Dallas Section will hold their meeting on Wednesday, June 27th at On the Border in Addison.
J. "Matthew" Shadonix from Stuber Cooper Voge will speak to paralegals about construction law, including
how paralegals need to prepare and address issues from a document control standpoint including filing
construction liens, and quick searches regarding liens and filing procedures, he will give a primer on the
legal aspects of Building Information Modelling, and intellectual property implications.
We also have numerous Pro Bono and Community Service opportunities available this month including
Tango Tab at Bar Louie on June 9th and Soupmobile, DAPA's 2018 Charity, on June 23rd – check out the
flyer within this newsletter for more information and additional opportunities. We would love to see you at
one of these events!!
NFPA/Thomson Reuters Scholarship deadline is July 1st. NFPA and Thomson Reuters award scholarships
totaling $5,000 to paralegal students each year based on recommendations of the NFPA Education Coordi-
nator. Scholarship funds may be used to pursue a paralegal education. To find out more and learn about
the 2018 scholarship topic about electronic evidence and spoliation go to the "Events/Awards and Scholar-
ships" tab at www.paralegals.org and click "Read more about the qualifications and review criteria for NFPA
awards."
As a reminder, we are always looking for mentors for our Wendi A. Rogers Mentor/Protégé Program! If
you are a paralegal with five (5) or more years of substantive paralegal experience and are willing to assist
new paralegals, we need you! Applications for mentors and proteges can be found within this newsletter.
Finally, Texas Lawyers for Children (TLC) needs our help! If you haven't already signed up, I highly en-
courage you to do so. TLC makes a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children; let's do what

Dallas Area Paralegal Association
The Dallas Area Paralegal Association (DAPA) was formed on October 23, 1976 as the
Dallas Association of Legal Assistants, and changed its name in 1996. In 1978, DAPA
became affiliated with the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA), an
organization that represents approximately 10,000 paralegals nationwide. DAPA is a
voluntary non-profit corporation composed of paralegals working in all areas of the law,
who are interested in furthering their own professional development, especially
through PACE® and other voluntary certifications, and who are dedicated to the advance-
ment of the paralegal profession as a whole.

On the Record is published monthly by the Dallas Area Paralegal
Association as a means of reporting and sharing news and opinions of
interest to DAPA members. Any opinions expressed herein are those of
the writer and not necessarily those of DAPA. Publication herein does
not imply endorsement in any manner.
If you have important information regarding the paralegal profes-
sion, notices of upcoming meetings, events or other dated material, or
section reports to be included in our monthly newsletter, all must be
submitted to the Editor at [email protected] no later than
the 20th day of the month preceding publication. In order to produce
and mail each newsletter to reach our membership in a timely manner,
this deadline must be met. Any material not received by the 20th will be
held for the following month’s publication. Your understanding and
appreciation in meeting our deadline will be greatly appreciated.

Upcoming and Ongoing Opportunities NFPA Operation Gratitude - Give Back! NFPA is pleased to announce our corporate partnership with Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude sends Care Packages filled with entertainment, hygiene, and handmade items, non-perishable snacks, and personal letters of appre-ciation to U.S. Troops, First Responders, Veterans, Military Families, and Wounded Heroes & their Care Givers. The NFPA Pro Bono and Armed Forces Committees are pleased to support this wonderful project. This project provides our associations with the opportunity to express our gratitude to those who serve. NFPA and the Homeless Youth Legal Network The ABA HYLN Pro Bono project is a new initiative aimed at increasing legal services and improving outcomes for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness. Pro bono paralegal assistance may be needed at shelters in your area. The ABA is currently conducting a survey to gather information and match potential lawyers and non-lawyer volunteers. The Jan Pruitt Community Pantry is a client-choice food pantry that is now open in Lancaster, TX. It re-quires 6 volunteers per day every Tuesday – Saturday to assist in serving the hungry in this area. We ask for assistance in 4-hour shifts ranging from 8 AM – 5 PM but can accept any amount of time you are able to give. Immigration Legal Services is currently setting up the next round of citizenship classes to begin in Au-gust, 2018. Classes will run once a week for three months and is seeking instructors who can commit to the three-month block. Classes are offered at offsite locations and are primarily offered during nights and weekends though some are during the working business day. 3.6 Mandatory Continuing Legal Education for Voting Members:
Renewing voting members must complete a minimum of six (6) hours of substantive continuing legal education (CLE), at least one
(1) hour of which must be in the area of Ethics. Notwithstanding the immediately preceding sentence, renewing voting members
who joined the Association in the immediately preceding membership year shall be required to complete one half (0.5) hour of CLE
for each month for which he or she was a member during the immediately preceding membership year, of which at least one half
(0.5) hour must be in the area of Ethics. All CLE requirements must be completed by December 31st of at the immediately preced-
ing membership year. No carry-over of CLE hours shall be allowed from year to year. Non-participatory CLE or self-study CLE
hours shall be allowed from year to year and may account for no more than two (2) CLE hours of the six (6) required CLE hours
each membership year. Renewing voting members must report their CLE on a form promulgated by the Board of Directors and
such completed forms shall be subject to audit by the Board of Directors in its discretion. The Board of Directors shall use the
following criteria for approval of continuing education courses for credit towards mandatory CLE requirements for renewing voting
members.

“Boone-isms” By

On May 1, 2018, the DAPA Leadership/Management Section heard attorney John McShane speak on "Boone-isms: Leadership Lessons
Learned from T. Boone Pickens," gleaned from his many years as an attorney and friend of T. Boone Pickens.
Mr. McShane is a 50-year trial lawyer and Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He served as a former
Chairman of the State Bar of Texas Grievance Committee, District 6A, former Board member of Texas Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers.
Mr. McShane is also a Certified Professional Coach working with individual lawyers and presenting programs to groups. In his coaching
work, Mr. McShane guides lawyers on “practicing law therapeutically, being a healer for clients and having a vision…” As a coach, Mr.
McShane helps lawyers, based upon his many years of practicing law and personal experiences.
Mr. Pickens acknowledges John McShane in his autobiography, The First Billion is the Hardest
and refers to McShane as a friend as well as his lawyer in the book.
T. Boone Pickens built one of the largest independent natural gas oil companies in the United
States, but he readily attests to a life of “stunning achievements and stinging losses alike, chock
full of lessons.” www.boonepickens.com
Mr. McShane selected some choice “Boone-isms” to share at the section meeting that reveal
some of those lessons, and added his additional comments, including the following:
1. Have a strategic plan. “A fool with a plan can beat a genius with no plan.”
2. But remember, you have to execute on the plan. “A plan without action is not a plan. It’s
a speech.“
3. Stay focused. “When you are hunting elephants, don’t get distracted chasing rabbits.”
4. Be decisive. “Be willing to make decisions. That’s the most important quality in a good
leader. Don’t fall victim to what I call the ‘ready-aim-aim-aim-aim’ syndrome. You must
be willing to fire.”
5. Set a good work ethic. “Work hard. Come early, stay late. That’s the way leadership has
to approach it.”
6. Play by the rules. Honesty and integrity are critical. “I learned early on that you play by the rules. It’s no fun if you cheat to win.”

7. Be the eternal optimist. “Like the fella who fell off the top of a 10-story building … and as he passed the third floor, said, ‘So far so
good.’”
8. Be confident, yet modest. Remember, “The higher the monkey climbs a tree, the more you can see his ass.”
9. Keep score. Know your winners and losers. At the end of the day, “You judge a trapper by his pelts or a wood chopper by his chips.”
10. Be Grateful. “I thank the Lord for letting me hang around as long as I have. Every day is thrilling for me.”

Mr. McShane summed up Leadership Lessons with:
1. Results matter!
2. Have a roadmap plan that is clearly thought out. Leave any planning meeting WITH a Plan !
3. Take action, don’t procrastinate
4. Focus on what is important to the client
5. Bond with your team
6. Quantify your goals with the results
7. Be grateful, be generous, be loyal
8. Dare to think bigger
Mr. McShane concluded with what he feels is the most important: relationships.

REPORTING PRO BONO and COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS
We are excited to announce that pro bono and community service reporting is now set up through your member login on the NFPA website.
1. Go to the NFPA website ( www.paralegals.org ) 2. Sign in with your email and password 3. Once logged in, go to the Pro Bono tab and select “Reporting Pro Bono and Community Service Hours”
4. The form will auto fill your name and individual information that was provided to NFPA by your local association. 5. Complete the form and submit.
The reporting period will remain July 1st through June 30th— so get your time in to NFPA!! Please report pro bono hours on a quarterly basis so that the NFPA Liaison to the ABA can share your service hours and
projects with the ABA. NFPA’s Model Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility and Guidelines for reinforcement state that:
