A Look At The New CDC

The $5.66 million facility accommo-dates dependents of military and civil-ian employees. The center is 9,175 square feet -- nearly triple the size of the current 3,410 square foot center. The center increases its student popula-tion from 36 to 66 with classes to include infants, pre-toddler, toddler and preschool ages from 6 weeks to 4 years old. The new child development center is equipped with energy saving fea-tures such as solar hot water heating, photovoltaic cells, ground source heat pumps and many other energy saving features. The center features the Sarah Anne Calabrese Infant Room. Calabrese was the former Moral, Welfare & Recreation (MWR) Child and Youth

Program Director. She began working for MWR as a child care attendant in May 1982 and worked her way up to child and youth program director. She worked for MWR for 24 years until she passed away in August 2006. The center employees 21 staff members who are all certified as a Child Development Associates in stages of early childhood develop-ment and social behavior. The Center is certified by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation. The center has five child activ-ity rooms, a well equipped kitchen, laundry, administrative and training spaces. The infant and pre-toddler rooms have in-floor radiant heating systems to ensure the floor area is warm for the young children.
