Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan
Thursday, August 4, 7pm
at the Valentine Theater

Join us for the Ohio premiere of the documentary He-
roes On Deck, by Emmy award nominated filmmaker John
Davies. The hour long film explores the critical role of
the USS Wolverine and the USS Sable , two Great Lakes
passenger steamers that were converted into aircraft
carriers and used to train thousands of pilots to land at
sea in WWII. There will be a VIP reception for the
director prior to the screening as well as a sneak
peek of an upcoming temporary exhibit on the topic.
Tickets for the screening are $7.50 for members and $10 for non-members.
Tickets are free for veterans and active military.
The VIP director’s reception will begin at 6pm. Tickets are $25 for members and $35 for non-members.

“What’s a Freighter Trip All About” Party Thursday, August 25, 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Chris Gillcrist will present a history of freighter trips using photographs
and manuscript material from the archives. Meet and talk with individuals
who have been lucky enough to take a freighter trip!
Snacks, beer and wine are included in this FREE event.

Guests who purchase a Luck of the Lakes Raffle ticket at the party will be entered into a
special drawing that evening for two amazing prizes: (1) Lunch for 4 and a tour of an
Interlake Steamship (2) An afternoon trip for 6 aboard the J.W. Wescott II to deliver mail
to a freighter in the Detroit River. A picnic lunch is included.

Nautical Antique and Flea Market
Saturday, August 27, 10am to 5pm
We have invited many vendors from around the area
who sell used books, photographs, collectibles and
other material related to Great Lakes history. The
museum as part of its ongoing review of its collection
will be selling duplicates in material, including books,
photographs and other collectibles. Admission to the
show is included with the price of admission to the
museum. Museum members are admitted for free!

Detroit River Tour 2015
Register Early! We are happy to say that many of our programs have been
filling up early. We have limited seating for some events
and its important to register so you are able to participate.
Earlier this year, the Spring Lecture Series, Member’s Only
Pancake Breakfast and Fourth of July Fireworks viewing
on the Col. James M. Schoonmaker all booked up well
beforehand. Sign up early so you don’t miss any exciting
upcoming events!
Museum on the Move
Marblehead Tour Wednesday, August 31, 9:30am to 5pm
Tickets are $75 for members and $85 for non-members
Spend the day with us exploring the Marblehead Peninsula
and Catawba Island. Participants will meet on the
Marblehead Peninsula and then travel by bus to tour the
historic Marblehead Lighthouse, have lunch at the Catawba
Island Club, tour Lafarge’s Marblehead Quarry and visit
Johnson’s Island, the site of a Civil War prison.
Detroit River Tour Saturday, September 24, 10:30am to 3pm
Tickets are $45 for members and $55 for non-members
Enjoy a three-hour curated tour of Detroit by water aboard
the Diamond Jack with lunch delivery by the J .W. Wescott
II, the only floating post office in the world that delivers mail to
ships as they are underway.

Meaghan Fisher, award winning author of Tyler the
Fish Saves Lakes Erie and Tyler the Fish and Marty the
Sturgeon will be with us again this year to read and sign her
newest book Tyler the Fish and the Lake Erie Bully!

A 1000-Mile Great Lakes Island Adventure
by Loreen Niewenhuis, author and adventurer
Loreen Niewenhuis has written three books chronicling
her 1000-mile walks around the Great Lakes. In this
program she will take you to islands in each of the Great
Lakes and their connecting waters. She will also take you
along with her to explore some of the scientific research on
the islands that she assisted with during her island
odyssey. Niewenhuis will open her audience’s eyes and
minds to the complexity of life on our Great Lakes islands.

Lake Erie’s Perfect Storm: Black Friday, October 20, 1916
by Carrie Sowden, Archeological Director for the
National Museum of the Great Lakes
Four ships and 58 crewmembers were lost when a storm
hit Lake Erie on what would come to be known as “Black
Friday.” Join us to learn about and commemorate the
100-year anniversary of this tragic event.

McDougall’s Great Lakes Whalebacks
by Neel Zoss, author and historian
Neel Zoss is one of the Great Lakes’ foremost experts on
Alexander McDougall’s whaleback barges and
steamships. In this presentation Zoss will explore the
history of this unique design and highlight some of the
notable examples of the style.
