On the Caravaggio trail Aboard the sea cloud ii

September 30 October 17, 2016 Tour leader: Dr Kathleen Olive

Overview Academy Travel is proud to offer a tour that explores the work of exceptional artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. His chiaroscuro technique, accentuating the dramatic contrasts between light and shade, control of the oil medium, and infusion of emotional intensity and the theatre of everyday life ensure that his works continue to captivate art lovers. This tour surveys the majority of Caravaggios work in southern Italy, from his early days as a painter of natura morta (still life), to his mature works in Rome and Naples chapels, to the hurried canvases of his troubled time on Malta and Sicily. The cruise takes place on the yacht Sea Cloud II. This 45-cabin, three-masted barque is traditionally crafted in teak, but with modern features. On most days the Sea Cloud II will set its 40 or so sails for at least a few hours, an enchanting experience. The experience of sailing on the Sea Cloud II is very, very different from mainstream ocean cruising and it gives us the unique opportunity to survey Caravaggios work in style and with a relaxed pace. In addition, we visit archaeological sites of pre-history and Antiquity on Malta and Sicily, as well as getting a sense of the medieval Mediterranean in glittering Norman Palermo and Angevin Naples. We also see key works of the period in their architectural context, from Caravaggio and Raphaels canvases, to Berninis sculpture and Borrominis architectural virtuosity. All this takes place in a setting of remarkable beauty the spare, rocky shores of Malta, the dramatic mountains and volcanoes of Sicily and the countless bays and cliffs of the southern Italian coastline. The tour has been designed to combine the best of land and sea travel. The itinerary comprises four nights on Malta, the cruise and then a further five days in Naples and Rome. The land component is in carefully chosen, centrally located hotels that allow us to maximise our sight-seeing, and there are no long coach journeys. We have also included a number of excellent meals and time to individually explore local culture. The tour takes place in October, generally a very pleasant time of year on land and sea. Winds are typically fairly gentle at this time, allowing for an enjoyable sailing experience. Like all Academy Travel tours, there will be a maximum of 20 people in our party.

Tour Leader Dr Kathleen Olive holds a doctorate in Italian Studies from the University of Sydney, where she has also taught the history and culture of medieval and Renaissance Europe. Her expertise covers European history, society, art and architecture. Kathleen leads numerous tours to Italy, Spain and the United States for Academy Travel, and speaks fluent Italian. She has lectured extensively on the art of Caravaggio and its historical context.

The Sea Cloud II The 348-foot Sea Cloud II was launched in 2001, and offers a truly memorable travel experience. The design and fittings are modelled on her sister ship, the 1931 Sea Cloud, the private yacht of the renowned American heiress and businesswoman Marjorie Merewether Post. Teak decks, brass fittings, white cloth sails and luxurious decor create a unique environment, matching perfectly the historical themes of our tour. Although much of the journey takes place under motor, on several days the crew climbs the rigging to set the square sails and jibs and you experience the thrill of ocean yachting. The facilities onboard are excellent. With a maximum of 94 passengers and 50 crew, service is very attentive. (There is a maximum of 20 in our tour party.) Cabins are large and comfortable, with twin beds, a sofa, built-in wardrobes and private bathrooms (please see further information and diagrams later in this itinerary). There is a range of public spaces, including a salon, a library/internet station, a lido deck with a bar and seating and deck chairs running along the sides of the decks. There is a laundry, a small fitness centre, a day spa and a hospital room on board. A doctor accompanies all voyages. The food, wine and outstanding service on board is a real highlight of travelling on Sea Cloud II. All meals are included; the menu is interesting and varied and is complemented by a wide and varied range of wines. Dinners are served in the large and elegant dining room. Weather permitting, buffet lunches are served on the lido deck. Participants in Academy Travels 2012 tour on Sea Cloud II described it as the trip of a lifetime. Flights from Australia arrive in the early afternoon. After transferring to our hotel and checking in, we take a short boat cruise of Maltas imposing harbour before a welcome drink and light dinner in our hotel. Overnight Valletta (D)

Saturday 1 october Caravaggio on malta

We commence this morning with a guided walking tour of Valletta, Maltas historic capital. The city was built immediately after the Great Siege of 1565 and is remarkably uniform in its layout and architecture. A highlight of our visit is the co-cathedral, with Caravaggios Beheading of St John the Baptist, painted in 1608 while the artist was seeking refuge from Italy, and his St Jerome. Our tour includes lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we transfer to the Inquisitors Palace in Vittoriosa, one of the only palaces of its type to survive in Europe. Its Baroque architecture and historic exhibits give us a sense of religious and political culture in Caravaggios time. In the late afternoon, we return to our hotel for an early evening talk. Overnight Valletta (B, L)

Sunday 2 october prehistoric temples and mdina

This morning we travel a short distance to some fascinating prehistoric temples, dating to 3,000 BCE, among the oldest built structures on earth. Nearby is an equally ancient hypogeum, or underground burial chamber. We continue to the former medieval capital of Malta, Mdina. Here we have lunch and explore the imposing cathedral and wander the charming streets before returning to Valletta. Overnight Valletta (B)

Monday 3 october gozo

The island of Gozo is the second largest in the Maltese archipelago, and it contains some remarkable sites. Today we take a private tour by boat and coach. Highlights of the day include the Ggantija temples, the worlds oldest religious structures, the fortress at Victoria and the fishing village of Xlendi, where we have lunch. We return to Valletta in the evening. Overnight Valletta (B, L)
