Interview with Mike Davis, Director, Market Development at the Intercontinental Exchange, London, who discusses changes in Brent futures trading and the benchmark crude’s characteristics,
and the disparity between Brent and WTI prices; how speculators have influenced the global crisis and how the crisis has influenced exchange trading; and trading the East Siberian ESPO crude on the ICE exchange and on the prospects and development of exchange trading in Russia.
INTERVIEW WITH BENTE NYLAND, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE NORWEGIAN PETROLEUM DIRECTORATEBente Nyland, Director General of the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, told OGJR in an interview about the situation in the country’s oil and gas sector, and about legal and other measures to develop the country’s resource base, despite the active production of hydrocarbons at ageing fields; about the technological and ecological aspects of offshore operations; and about cooperation with Russia.
NORTH AMERICAN LNG EXPORTS COMPLICATED BY ALTERNATIVE MARKETS, INVESTMENT COSTSAt current natural gas prices, North American LNG exports appear extremely attractive. The existence of an alternative market, however, and the size of the required investment add complexity to the prospect.© Oil & Gas Journal, 3 October 2011, p. 130-135.
INTERVIEW WITH SERGEI DONSKOI, GENERAL DIRECTOR OF ROSGEOLOGIAJust over half a year has passed since the Rosgeologia state holding was set up. The new company’s chief, Sergei Donskoi, told OGJR in an interview about the state of geological exploration in Russia today, about Rosgeologia’s role in the replenishment of the country’s mineral resources and about then risks borne by investors in the Russian geological sector.
EAST SIBERIAN OIL: RESOURCE POTENTIAL AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR RAMPING UP PRODUCTIONIn terms of initial total in-place resources, East Siberia ranks second only to West Siberia, and is regarded as Russia’s last onshore region with a potential for creating major new oil- and gas-production centers. At the same time, East Siberia remains one of the country’s little-studied regions. All its oil and gas reservoirs are structurally complex and, as a rule, under-explored. Analysis of current production levels and reserves that have been explored has been used to project potential oil
production levels to 2030 and the main means of achieving this, which is to step up prospecting and exploratory drilling.
THE GEOLOGY AND HYDROCARBONS POTENTIAL OF THE KARA SEADespite the ongoing debate about the Kara Sea’s resources, there is every reason to believe that the potential of this most hydrocarbon-rich Arctic sea will grow even more as the result of geological work being carried out there. Hence the need to study its geological structure. Analysis and collation of all geological studies from the region, the reinterpretation of seismic data and comprehensive modeling have confirmed the high hydrocarbons potential and good prospects for prospecting oil and gas fields on the Kara Sea shelf.
EASTERN EUROPE CAN LEVERAGE ON ITS SHALE GAS POTENTIAL TO REDUCE DEPENDENCE ON RUSSIAN GASEastern Europe has long been dependent on Russia to meet its natural gas requirements. Shale gas resources in Eastern Europe have the potential to provide adequate natural gas to these countries to meet their increasing domestic demands. Following the success of shale gas development in the US, gas shale’s in Eastern Europe, if developed successfully, have the potential to help this region to reduce its dependence on Russian gas imports.
POLAND SHALE GAS COULD CHANGE EUROPEAN SUPPLY MIXPoland’s push toward exploration, development, and anticipated production of shale gas appears to have become almost a national mission for the European nation seeking to break its reliance upon conventional Russian natural gas and to eventually become a supplier to the European gas market.© Oil & Gas Journal, 7 November 2011, p. 36-40.
THICK SHALE GAS PLAY EMERGING IN SPAIN’S CANTABRIAN BASINSpain, with fifth of the world’s liquefied gas import terminals, is the world’s third biggest LNG importer. Spain would therefore like to develop its own resources, which are not that plentiful. Wells drilled during the 1950s in the country’s north revealed shale gas plays. Now, a group of oil companies intends to drill a first two appraisal wells in the Basque Country.© Oil & Gas Journal, 5 December 2011, p. 52-53.
SHALE GAS PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGICAL POSSIBILITIES AND EQUIPMENTThe article looks at the technological opportunities and equipment for producing share gas in their most cost-intensive aspects, which are horizontal well-drilling and flow stimulation. Illustrates the main stages and capabilities of coiled tubing rigs for sidetracking and hydrofracturing.
