Overview
The 5th
annual Indie Soul Festival will be held on August 22
nd, 23
rd, and 24
th of 2014. The Massachusetts Black
Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with Brotherhood on the Move, and various diverse cultural institutions and organizations will once again bring the vitality of music, art, food and culture back to Springfield, Massachusetts, the heart of the Pioneer Valley. This year’s festival will be held at the beautiful Riverfront Park in downtown Springfield. The Indie Soul Festival on the Connecticut River focuses on the great tradition of art, music and food; for three wonderful days the festival will host demonstrations and performances of proud history and contemporary traditions. More than 10,000 visitors are expected to
stroll through the vendor booths, hear entertainers on two engaging stages as well as sample a variety of foods. In addition this year we have added a Book Fair component to the schedule with workshops held at American International College. From every corner of the park ringing out over the jubilant Connecticut River you will hear soulful rhythms & blues music, affectionately known as Soul music, Festival organizer Darryl E. Moss stated that this festival focuses on the importance of African American culture particularly Soul music which is "music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying." He states “music lovers will also hear catchy rhythms, stressed by handclaps and dance, along with an outside art gallery highlighting African American art which provided the soul of soul music.” The Springfield Indie Soul Music, Books, and Art Festival is representative of the dynamic and culturally creative African American community. Taking place in a community built upon rich natural resources, thriving urban center and engaging artistic landscapes. An African American community rich in heritage of freedom, optimism, opportunity and achievement, a community with a history of strong contributors to Springfield’s modern culture.
The Festival presents an opportunity for thousands of people to learn about African
American art and literature, their heritage and culture firsthand from people who have dedicated their lives to celebrating, promoting and preserving it.
The Festival is a family friendly event that draws evenly across all age groups and is as diverse as the American republic.
Extensive positive exposure is expected through local, regional and national media
coverage. Our committee is working diligently to ensure that the programs ensure an enriching news element on television, radio and print will reach countless
viewer/listeners including but not limited to policy-makers, corporations, tourism boards, educators, cultural figures as well as the general public.
The Festival boosts tourism, promotes the public image of those represented and stimulates the interest in our local culture, while enhancing our ability to provide scholarships to deserving area students on a merit basis.
