FREE!!ADMISSION 7AM–7PM

Mike DoranRSC Member since January 2009

I live in O’Fallon with my wife, Tammy, and our seven-year-old son. I work in St. Louis doing radio and voice-over, so for the most part, my job keeps me sitting down inside a studio.

Mike’s Fitness Plan:

The RSC is a main component in keeping me active. I’ve always been in pretty decent shape, but my fitness activity fluctuates up and down. When Tammy and I participated in Coach Angela’s winning Spring Training Challenge team, I was able to lose more than 25 pounds. Now, with a quality nutrition and fitness schedule, I feel as if we’re making real lifestyle changes and keeping our focus on long-term success.

Usually, I plan a mix of free weights and cardio workouts. However, during the Spring Training Challenge, I switched to primarily cardio with the rowing machine (ouch, double ouch!) and the Crossramp, although I’m still lifting weights a couple days a week. To prepare food, I am now weighing meat, eating a lot of veggies, and avoiding my mortal enemy, the between-meal snack. I try to hit the RSC early mornings during the week, and usually take the weekends off.

What motivates Mike:

Maybe some of you saw me hauled out of the RSC in an ambulance last summer (ah, the memories). If that’s not a wake-up call, I don’t know what is. A battery of tests revealed no heart issues (my head, that’s a different story). But blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol were all starting to creep up on me, and I was getting prescriptions lobbed at me. I’d been as healthy as could be most of my life, but my 40s, along with undisciplined diet and exercise, were starting to take their toll.

Mike’s advice to others:

Pack your lunch for work, get a calorie app, work hard for your days off... and then enjoy your days off!

Danielle FroelichRSC Member since December 2010

I’ve always loved playing sports. For five years, I was a competitive gymnast before I decided to put all my focus on softball. I play second base and outfield as well as pinch run for other players, so I have to be light on my feet. My workouts only consisted of cardio and abs until I met Kyle Armstrong, a 17-year-old, 5’10”, 190 lb. body builder who taught me how to lift. Cardio is great and I still do a ton of it, but lifting is what makes you stronger and shapes your muscles. Going to the gym is a family event. My parents drop the kids off at the RSC Kids’ Korner and meet me upstairs!

Danielle’s fitness plan:

I eat clean and work out five days a week with two days of rest. Monday is chest, Tuesday is back, Wednesday is legs, Thursday is shoulders and Friday is arms. Legs are my favorite work out, so I usually train those again on Sunday.

What motivates Danielle:

I’m very petite like my mom, who is only 4’11” and 90 lbs. When I turned 16 in February 2012, I was 5’1” tall and weighed 102 lbs. In February 2013, I was still 5’1”, but now I’m about 112 lbs. and ten times stronger. My main motivation is to be stronger than people bigger than me and to keep gaining muscle weight until I’m 120 lbs.

Danielle’s advice to others:

Eat “clean” and prepare food ahead of time, so you don’t end up picking up fast food!

Ask the DoctorOn the first Wednesday of every month from 6–7 p.m., meet Dr. Scott Grogan, a board-certified Chiropractic Physician, by the desk in the fitness center for answers to your health and fitness-related questions. Dr. Grogan graduated from Logan College of Chiropractic in 2011, and then earned a Masters of Sports Science and Rehabilitation from Logan in 2012. Dr. Grogan also completed his full body certification in Active Release Technique in 2011, giving him a unique approach to the treatment of patients by addressing not only the joints but the surrounding soft-tissue as well.

Dr. Grogan utilizes the “joint-by-joint” approach to patient care, which emphasizes the impact that the kinetic chain (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders etc.) can have on the entire body. Through functional analysis Dr. Grogan will locate the true dysfunction and source of the problem to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Through mobilization of the joints and by placing a heavy emphasis on soft-tissue treatment and rehabilitation, his goal is to provide fast, effective care and empower patients to take control of their own health.

Dr. Grogan has a passion for athletics. He is very involved with the Crossfit community, and he has both competed with and treated competition teams. He’s also served as the team physician for community college athletics, American Legion baseball, and for the Ballwin Race Series.

Civic Dance Studio Now though June 2014!

Enroll now! This great eleven-month dance program encourages students to practice and improve throughout the school year, and culminates with a Year-End Dance Recital. Class participation is crucial in preparing for the recital, so we ask that children commit to attending ALL scheduled classes through June 2014.

New students will be accepted into the program at any time; however, students joining after January 2014 will not be eligible to participate in the recital held June 8, 2014. Classes are held at the Civic Annex.

Regular participation in Civic Dance Studio is the best way to help students build a progressive foundation for dance as they learn and practice dance steps and master the skills they need. Enrollment options are as follows:

Students progress at different rates. To assign the class most helpful to them, dancers will be assessed for ability as well as age, with age considered secondary. Students also will be monitored to be sure that placement is correct.

Mike Phelps September 13 – October 25 Medium: painting

Artist Mike Phelps, who recently moved to O’Fallon, is a landscape painter who enjoys plein-air painting events and teaching watercolor and oil painting.

Like most artists, Mike can trace his love for art to an early age. Growing up, he took art classes wherever he lived: California, the Pacific Northwest, and Australia. But he didn’t become a painter until after a career in the U.S. Air Force and work as a chaplain for a hospital in western Tennessee. To de-stress, he took a water coloring course, and kept on painting. Today he is an accredited Dorothy Dent instructor with a colorful body of work on his website, www.mikephelpsfineart.com.

O’FallonTheatreWorksO’FallonTheatreWorks presents Please Remain CalmOctober 25 – 27 and November 1 – 3On the stage at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall)Curtain time is 7 p.m. for all performances.

Concessions will be available; the Box Office opens at 6 p.m. before each show.

Question: What do you do with a young child who’s been bitten by a zombie? Answer: If you’re the Greenwood family, you bandage her up and lock her in the coat closet.

This play about zombies is part scary, part comedy, definitely tongue-in-cheek and totally fun. Trapped in a remote farmhouse in 1950s Indiana during the spread of a strange new virus, the Greenwoods and their neighbors find themselves in danger of being eaten by crazed victims. As they board the windows and take up arms, this small band of survivors must decide what to do about the child kicking in the closet and the friends banging at their door. If they want to avoid turning into monsters and save their very souls, their only hope is to remain calm.

Tickets (in advance)• $10 general admission

• $8 seniors (ages 55+), children and students (ages 6–17)

• Discount rate for groups of 10 or more.

• $2 additional charge at the box office, which opens an hour before each show.

O ’Fallon’s Learn to Swim program is built on teaching aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. Our goal

is to teach children and adults how to swim and be safe in and

around the water.

The program is composed of 11 course levels:

Aqua Learning:Level:

Preschool:Preschool Plus:

Level 1: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4:Level 5:Level 6:

Level:

Shrimp I and IIPollywogTurtleSeahorseExplorerSubmarineClipperSailorAdventurerBarracudaAdult

Aqua Learning: Parent and child participation is required. Class size is limited to eight parent-child couples.

Preschool – Level 3: Class ratio is six children to one instructor.

Levels 4 – 6: Class ratio is eight children to one instructor.

Adult: Class ratio is eight adults to one instructor.

Pollywog: Class ratio is four to one instructor. Parents are required to be in the water the first four classes.

Participants will move to the next class or skill level when all skills from the previous level are mastered. Some classes may seem repetitive, but we want swimmers to perfect their skills in order to advance safely. Please keep in mind that children learn at different paces and it’s common to repeat a class.

Weekday classes at the RSC meet twice weekly for four weeks and last 35 minutes. Saturday morning sessions last 40 minutes and meet for seven weeks.

Which class is right for my child? To ensure your child’s success in the Learn to Swim Program, it’s important to register children for the appropriate level. Children who have participated in the swimming program should register according to the last class successfully completed. Each child must pass a particular level before proceeding to the next.

Aqua LearningThis program helps children ages 6 months to 3 years become comfortable in and around water and prepares them to learn how to swim. The class is divided into two sections: Shrimp I and Shrimp II. NOTE: Classes may seem repetitive because they are introductions to water.

Shrimp I • Ages 6 – 18 monthsParent-child or guardian participation in the water is required. The instructor will demonstrate techniques as parents learn how to safely guide children and help them advance at their own pace.
