New students will be accepted into the program at any time; however, students joining after January 2013 will not be eligible to participate in the recital held June 2, 2013. Classes are held at the Civic Annex.

Regular participation in Civic Dance Studio is the best way to help students build a progressive foundation for dance as they learn and practice dance steps and master the skills they need. Enrollment options are as follows:

O’FallonTheatreWorksSteel Magnolias November 30 – December 2, and December 7 – 98 p.m. curtain time on Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. matinee on SundaysO’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall) auditorium

Written by Robert Harling, Steel Magnolias is filled with hilarious repartee, drawing on characters whose inner strength, deep bond for one another, and willingness to poke fun makes them marvelous company in good times and bad.

The action takes place in Truvy’s home beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure if she’s still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to her clients: Ouiser, the town’s rich curmudgeon (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); Miss Clairee, an eccentric millionaire with a raging sweet tooth; and M’Lynn, the local social leader whose daughter, Shelby, the prettiest girl in town, is getting married.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for students (ages 6 - 17) and $8 for seniors (ages 65+). There is a $2 up-charge when purchased at the door. Tickets go on sale Monday, October 29 and can be purchased by phone (credit cards only) or in person at the Renaud Spirit Center (2650 Tri Sports Circle; 636-474-2732) or the Parks and Recreation Office (400 Civic Park Drive; 636-379-5606).

Joe and I grew up playing sports. Many of our childhood memories involve sports, even throughout high school

and college. As adults, we have had some periods of time where we were not committed to fitness, but mostly we have stayed physically active. Joe has run two marathons and two half marathons, and has recently played in a softball league. I have run three half marathons, and have recently played in volleyball leagues.

As parents of three children (and one on the way), we want to set an example for our kids that health and wellness are important. We hope that, by modeling an active lifestyle, our kids will decide to make fitness a part of their lives for the long term. It’s also an added bonus that the energy we gain from exercising helps us to keep up with the little ones!

What is your fitness plan?

Currently, we are incorporating a lot of intense interval training-type workouts into our routine. Our fitness program is based on strength and intensity, and since starting these workouts last year we have seen improvements in overall athleticism.

We changed our diet in November of 2011 to be much cleaner, and have since seen great improvements in body composition. We try to eliminate grains, processed sugars, and dairy. This is the first time in our lives when we have really paid attention to the foods that we are eating, and it has made a huge impact in our energy levels and general wellness.

What motivates you? Kim BushmeyerI am motivated by seeing improvements in my body composition and increases in energy level. It doesn’t take long to feel sluggish and frumpy after some time off from the gym. As a stay-at-home mom, I also really enjoy getting an hour or so to myself to collect my thoughts while I work out. I could not stay committed if I didn’t know that my kids were being taken care of by wonderful people in Kids Korner. Keep up the good work!

Joe BushmeyerI am motivated by the improvements in overall athleticism that I have experienced. Previously, my athleticism was on the decline and I believed that all I could do was slow that decline. At the moment, I’m reversing it. I am motivated to continue to learn and work as I now know that both efforts yield results.

The Bushmeyer’s advice:

Make a commitment to yourself to be healthy, and hold yourself accountable. Nobody else can make you do anything. Fitness experts can definitely help to keep you motivated and give you ideas, but you have to really want to do this for yourself! It’s too easy to make excuses if you’re not fully committed.

O ’Fallon’s Learn to Swim program is built on teaching aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. Our goal

is to teach children and adults how to swim and be safe in and

around the water.

The program is composed of 11 course levels:

Aqua Learning:Preschool:

Preschool Plus:Level 1: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4:Level 5:Level 6:

Level:

Shrimp I and IITurtleSeahorseExplorerSubmarineClipperSailorAdventurerBarracudaFear of Water

Aqua Learning: Parent and child participation is required. Class size is limited to eight parent-child couples.

Preschool – Level 3: Class ratio is six children to one instructor.

Levels 4 – 6: Class ratio is eight children to one instructor.

Fear of Water: Class ratio is four to one instructor. Parents are required to be in the water the first four classes.

Participants will move to the next class or skill level when all skills from the previous level are mastered. Some classes may seem repetitive, but we want swimmers to perfect their skills in order to advance safely. Please keep in mind that children learn at different paces and it’s common to repeat a class.

Weekday classes at the RSC meet twice weekly for four weeks and last 35 minutes. Saturday morning sessions last 40 minutes and meet for seven weeks.

Which class is right for my child? To ensure your child’s success in the Learn to Swim Program, it’s important to register children for the appropriate level. Children who have participated in the swimming program should register according to the last class successfully completed. Each child must pass a particular level before proceeding to the next.

Aqua LearningThis program helps children ages 6 months to 3 years become comfortable in and around water and prepares them to learn how to swim. The class is divided into two sections: Shrimp I and Shrimp II. NOTE: Classes may seem repetitive because they are introductions to water.

Shrimp I • Ages 6 – 18 monthsParent-child or guardian participation in the water is required. The instructor will demonstrate techniques as parents learn how to safely guide children and help them advance at their own pace.
