Bob Danzig never forgot the childhood he spent bouncing from one foster home to another.

The ups and downs of those young years set the stage for his lifelong career with the Hearst Corporation—20 of which he spent as the senior corporate executive leading the Hearst Newspaper Group.

He was inspired to succeed by people he met early on. A social worker first affirmed Bob’s value when she told him, “You are worthwhile.” The office manager who hired a teenage Bob as an office boy at the Albany Times Union told him, “You are full of promise.” These two individuals changed his life.

MetamorphosisArt Winner Shares Her Growth

Calli Helferich, age 14, says about her butterfly drawing:

“As I drew the butterfly, beginning from the center to the

right, I thought about each of the words for the outline. I

wrote words based on what I thought a perfect family

would be like, the way we have to grow, like a butterfly.

“At first I didn’t like the idea of counseling, I felt weird

about it. Now that it’s over I sometimes think when I have

something on my mind that I would like to talk to [her

counselor] again, because she’s easy to tell things to.

I don’t feel weird about it anymore because it

helped me.”

Art as Therapy

To remind our children and families, and ourselves, of the

socio-emotional benefits of artistic expression, Child and

Family Services held a children’s art contest in January. The

work of more than 40 participants was judged by local artist

Angela Schuler and aficionado Diana Milock, with Diana

also providing prizes for winners. Kids were treated to a

Saturday afternoon of pizza, cake by Aunt B’s, and bowling

at Lucky Jack’s.

Thanks to all who helped make this appreciation special for our artists!

From the CEOSynergy In Service: CollaborationDear Friends:

Last week, I paid a visit to the Maritime Heritage Alliance (MHA), a local nonprofit organization that celebrates Great Lakes boating history through the building and restoration of wooden boats. Our collaboration began a few years ago with the S.A.I.L. (Success Always Involves Learning) therapeutic sailing experience for youth in our Elements program. S.A.I.L. is possible in part this year through the generosity of The Biederman Foundation.

Our partnership continued recently when Captain Rorke Miller organized a stand up paddleboard workshop as an alternative spring break for some of our youth. I was impressed by their attention to instructor Geoff Rudolf and their concentration and craftsmanship. Their pride and sense of accomplishment were evident as they worked. A local businessman dropped by while I was there to see the boys’ progress, as he had helped finance the effort by pre-purchasing one of the boards.

Former New Jersey Senator, Rhodes scholar and basketball legend Bill Bradley said, “Think of American society as a three-legged stool. One leg is the private sector, the second leg is the public sector, and the third leg is the nonprofit sector.” His point was that communities are stronger and more resilient when business, government, and nonprofit groups work together—the three-legged stool—to address challenges as they arise.

At Child and Family Services, we are committed to creating synergy with our collaborative partners in the non-profit (MHA and others), business (through the investment of donors and sponsors), and governmental sectors to better serve those vulnerable children and families who depend on us for help.

We are fortunate to live in northwestern Michigan, which is continually strengthened by the synergy of solid collaboration between private business, non-profit, and governmental organizations.

Enjoy this fine spring weather with your loved ones!!
