All residents who use a septic tank system need periodic tank cleaning and can now get help by calling (435) 262-1028 or by visiting the company website at www.sanpeteseptic.com. Owners Scott and Jessica Drew moved to Spring City in June of 2015 and noticed the lack of local pumping services when they had their residence septic tank pumped. Anytime septic tank maintenance was needed the closest services were coming into Sanpete from outside of the county. Scott has previously done carpet cleaning and water damage restoration work and was familiar with taking care of customers. A good friend of his, Caleb Knoblauch, from Tooele, introduced Scott to the pumping business. Working with Knoblauch and some other good friends, Scott has been trained in septic tank servicing, maintenance, operation of equipment and various business operations. With the purchase of a truck, Sanpete Septic Service has now been in business for over a year. In addition to pumping septic tanks, the service can handle RV tanks and other non-hazardous waste. About Septic Systems A well maintained septic tank can last for 50 years or more. However, if the tank is not maintained the system can become plugged and back up into a home in short order. Sanpete Septic Service can teach you how to properly use and maintain your septic system and maintain the bacteriological balance for it to function properly, so that it can give you years of trouble free service (see some of their advice on page 3). Typically, septic tanks should be pumped about every three-to-seven years. The frequency may vary depending on the size of the tank and the number of people using the system. Persons interested in purchasing property with a septic system should consider having the system inspected prior to purchase, because replacement or repair of a septic system can be expensive. Good septic system service is a must. Don’t let it get out of control, use Sanpete Septic Service and make arrangements for an easy flush every time. As the slogan says, “A Flush Beats a Full House.” Call (435) 262-1028 to schedule your appointment. VETERANS MEMORIAL OCTOBER UPDATE

The Spring City Veterans Monument will soon be a reality! The granite for the monument is expected to be in Utah by the end of September. The final list of Spring City veterans has been submitted for engraving. Nedra Allred, Tim and Lisa Syme, Vanoy Hansen and Boyd Mickel spent hours researching and verifying names. Concrete and electrical work continues at the monument site, thanks to hours of work from Delray Syme, LaMont Payne, Tim Syme, Matt Syme, Jeff Watson, Sam Allred, Shad Hardy, and Kent Kummer. The monument dedication is tentatively planned for Saturday, November 10. Patriotic people and businesses continue to donate. Between August 20 and September 19 the following people made donations: Bronze Level ($1.00-$100.00): Karen Olsen, and Silver Level ($101.00-$1000.00): Alpine Summit Roofing, Marlene Yardley, Donaldson Family Trust (Boyd and Sara Donaldson) and Neil and Kathy Chadwick. Thank you! This November is an appropriate time for Spring City to dedicate a Veterans Monument. It will mark the centennial of the Armistice ending the fighting of World War I. One hundred years ago people believed and hoped the “War to End All Wars” would be the last war ever fought. For years after World War I, November 11 was observed as Armistice Day, in remembrance of the millions who died in the “Great War”. One hundred years ago, young men from Spring City fought in the Great War. On November 15, 1918 the Mt. Pleasant Pyramid published a letter written by Reid H. Allred from “somewhere in France”. He describes an eight day battle with shell fire, machine gun fire, and barbed wire entanglements. Reid said men were killed near him but he never got a scratch, despite having his pack shot through. The same issue of the Pyramid notes that Vao Schofield was wounded by shrapnel in France. Both men, along with

hundreds of other Spring City men and women, will be listed on our monument. It will be a fitting reminder of their service for generations to come.

Christmas Celebration on Saturday, December 1st

Our Quarters for Christmas Event in 2017 was such a magical event -- with all the help from KSL TV people who came to Spring City with games and prizes, and brought Santa & Mrs. Claus on Chopper 5! Besides the fun and excitement experienced by attendees last year, we raised $1343.26 to help our local children in need receive shoes and coats. This was such a warm fuzzy feeling, that we have decided to do it again this year -- with a goal of DOUBLING our 2017 amount! So continue filling your mason jars -- emptying your pocket change (or paper money) into them until then -- for we will be inviting KSL back to Spring City for this great cause on Saturday, December 1st! It will be a pot luck breakfast like last year, which was warm & yummy!!! WE CAN DO THIS AGAIN -- BIGGER!!

What Key is this in? Sampling the Local Music Scene in Spring City

By Randal B. Thatcher When my wife and I moved to Spring City, nearly five years ago, I came with my 5-string banjo in tow, hoping I might discover a vibrant music scene here in this historic little town. I was not disappointed. To my delight, it has turned out to be the kind of place where a neighbor will happen to notice my banjo, leaning against a chair in the corner of the parlor, and then show up for a dinner party the following week with both an appetizer and his guitar! It’s the kind of place where someone you’ve known for months can suddenly surprise you with a captivatingly sweet tune in a pitch-perfect voice, or perhaps pull out a harmonica, or a mouth-harp in an unguarded moment, or serenade you on their ukulele, with a charming number they recently composed. In a place like this, you might meet a family folk band, with every member playing a stringed instrument, including an upright bass, a fiddle, and several guitars. You might pass a woman on the street who’s carrying an autoharp case, and be temped to follow her, just to see where’s she’s headed with it. You might even meet a fellow with so much music in his DNA that, as a baby, he would lie in his crib humming pop tunes he’s overheard on the family radio! Everyone who has an instrument leaning against a chair in their own parlor, and who understands the appeal of playing music just for the pure pleasure of it will also understand the heightened enjoyment of finding a few like-minded and similarly tuned souls, with whom they can get together and do a little pickin’ and grinnin’! These opportunities to play together might be informal as an impromptu jam session out on the neighbors’ front lawn, or as organized as getting a group together to “woodshed” a song or two to perform at the open mic session that opens the annual Spring City Bluegrass Festival. But if you’re looking for a regularly scheduled opportunity to dust off some tunes and “rosin up” your metaphorical “bow” (or your literal one), then tote your preferred instrument on over to the Ol’ Spring City Senior Center at 7:00 pm on the second and fourth Thursday of every month for Jim’s Song Circle. Or just come and tap

your toes!

SANPETE SEPTIC SYSTEMS — USEFUL INFORMATION A well maintained septic tank can last for 50 years or more. If the tank is not maintained the system can become plugged and back up into a home in short order. Periodic pumping is the primary maintenance required for septic tanks. However, many household practices can impact the overall health and operation of a septic system. Septic tank users who take care not to introduce excessive water, chemicals or contaminants and choose landscaping and building additions wisely can make their septic tanks almost maintenance-free. These practices, along with constant awareness of potential problem indicators such as odors, and poor drainage can deter potentially expensive repairs. Users should keep a log of past pumping and create a schedule for future servicing to maintain a regular routine. It is also important to avoid overloading the system with large amounts of water simultaneously. High water use activities such as washing clothes, running the dishwasher and showering should never be done at the same time. Also, repair any water leaks or constantly running plumbing fixtures immediately. Household cleaners, coffee grounds, food wastes, paper towels and anything else besides water or human waste should never be flushed into a septic system. Those items will clog the system and destroy the bacteriological balance needed for it to function properly.
