Wausau ElksWausau Elks Lodge #248
A publication for Members of The Wausau Elks October 2013 Volume 45 No. 7
Coming into the Fall and Winter activities that make use of our wonderful building, take time for a good look at the place we call home.
Built in 1923, this building replaced the house that served as the first Wausau Lodge. As our Lodge has grown, changed and adapted, so has our building and we continue to maintain it and adjust it to meet the
needs of changing membership and activities. Our entries, stairways and lobby, all received a very thorough cleaning and repair this summer. We
continued with some door and window upgrades to make us more weather efficient. The newest project, a patio cover to allow use during less than perfect weather is approaching it’s
fundraising goal and should get a boost from the upcoming spaghetti dinner. Our home, your Lodge, is a beautiful place, stop in for dinner or a cocktail. Share it with your family and
friends and enjoy one of the finest, most comfortable Elks Lodges in the State.
PACKER SUNDAYS ARE BACK! Sign up in the Member Lounge to be a part of one of
Wausau’s best Packer Parties. Only $10.00 per person, for the whole season, you get Drink Specials, Raffles, Lunch for each game, and lots of fun on Packer Game Sundays including FREE BEER every time the
Pack scores a Touchdown. You are also included in the Club Super Bowl Party.
Sign up to be a Sunday food sponsor and you and your group will receive $30.00 in drink chips after your event. There are only 12 games so don’t wait.
Sign up sheets are in the Member Lounge, ask your bartender and then come on down for Packer Sunday Fun that will continue through Super Bowl Sunday.

Hello fellow Elks, October is here, this means football has begun. Stop in to the lower bar during the Packer games for some awesome camaraderie. Join the Packer Club and drink a free beer every time the Pack scores a TD. State Soccer Shoot was a success again. Chuck Berens and his crew do a wonderful job every year. Bowling leagues are starting up again. They need teams and subs on both the Monday Men’s League and the Friday Couples League. Call Bob Dustrude or Dave Schmeider to get signed up. The Fall Conference in Baraboo was super fun. Our hospitality room was back to Wausau only, not quite so busy and hectic. It’s nice to enjoy a few beverages with your friends after all the meetings and get the spirit of Elkdom flowing again. We still need all of our committee heads to attend more often. There is a lot of money being left behind only because no one attended the meeting to find out where and when it’s available. Any member is welcome to attend any meeting. If you have never been to a convention I would suggest driving over on Saturday morning, going to a couple meetings and just get a grip on what is being accomplished. After that you might consider spending the weekend. Our new Grand Exalted Ruler, Millard Pickering and his lovely wife, Susanne were in Baraboo with us. I got to meet them once at the Baraboo Lodge, at the Banquet and even in our hospitality room. What super nice down to earth people. PER Old Timers Night will be held on October 22nd. Please plan on attending to help our most experienced mem-bers celebrate their special anniversaries. Call the lodge for reservations. October Fest has a new format this year, a little more laid back but fun, none the less. Check out the details in this issue. Be sure to show Kyle your appreciation by lending him a hand. Kids Halloween party will be held on October 26th. Volunteers are needed. Contact Chuck Berens for details. Lastly, Christmas is approaching, this means Good Fellowship has begun. Any new members are strongly encouraged to participate. There is no greater feeling than seeing first hand how happy and appreciative an under privileged child is when Santa brings them a pile of great gifts. Theron and Beth Gorski will be assisted by Ray and Laurie Dabler. Contact them to get started.Details will be further in this issue. I want to remind everyone Elkdom is about getting out in the community and doing good. Hanging out at the club is fun, but its much more satisfying when your talking about all the joy you gave to someone else. Thanks for being my fellow ELKS !!!

Fraternally,

We are nearly half way through our Lodge year and have lots more activities to look
forward to.
Coming up on October 22nd, we will be having Old Timers night, where we highlight those
members who have reached the 25 years or 50 years milestones and we will be having
Widow’s(er’s) night on November 5th.
Old Timers night is used to thank all of our members who have stayed 25 or more years
by treating them to supper. All of our more youthful members are welcome to attend for a
small fee to cover your dinner. So why not come and shake some hands of those members
who have supported our community and our Lodge for so many years.
Widow’s Night thanks the widows of our absent brothers because they supported their
spouses, who supported Elkdom and our community before joining our other “Absent Broth-
ers.” Many of the widows continue to honor their husbands by continuing to support Good-
fellowship, Elks National Foundation, State Major Project (Camp Wawbeek Respite Camp),
and Wausau Lodge.
Our Lodge Officers, and several Past Exalted Rulers, will be on hand for both of these
events to personally thank those who attend.

GOOD FELLOWSHIP NEWS A year has come and gone, fall is in the air with the crisp blue skies the rustling of leaves and the splendor of color all around us. It is a good reminder that this is the season of giving thanks and to celebrate the harvest. A reminder the holidays will soon be upon us and we Elks are called upon to share our time, talents and treasures with our community in the form of the Good Fellowship program. I will recap upon our successes of 2012, we received over $12,000.00 in donations sold 313 pounds of nuts and shared hundreds of dollars with our fellow Elks and friends with the 50/50 raffles. All told we raised $14,906.00 for the program. Congratulations and thank you for all the work and contributions. Your efforts allowed over 35 families and 80 children in the community to experience the Elks gift of generosity and caring for their fellow people. Once again we are heading up the 2013 campaign and are in need of volunteers, team captains, Santa Clauses, assistance working the tables on Family Nights and Fridays to continue our tradition. I also ask that you sincerely reflect upon a financial donation to ensure a successful program in 2013. Our first Good Fellowship meeting will be Tuesday October 2nd at 6 pm in the lower lounge, if you would like to be on the committee please join us, meetings typically last less than an hour and approximately 5 meetings will be held now through December. You can contact any of the Committee chairs to sign up for volunteering and we look forward to seeing all the people who have made this such a success. recognized that fact and made some adjustments to enhance our Club operations. Kyle Skoug has been promoted to the position of Club Manager. In this position Kyle will oversee all of our Club operations providing a central contact point that
will coordinate our Dining, Lounge and Event operations. Please feel free to contact him at 715.845.5602 or [email protected] anytime you have an event or Club operation question or suggestion. He will handle your concern personally and make sure you are directed to the proper member of our staff

Coming up on Tuesday November 5, 2013 Our Lodge Widow/Widowers Dinner will be hosted by Exalted Ruler Kevin McCarthy and his
wife Wendy. Make plans now to attend this important event.
Our Sincere Thanks and Appreciation go out to Pat Tuttle of Oldcastle Building Envelope and to Dave Mohelnitzky of Rib Mountain Glass.
Pat donated the three insulated door lites for the 2 entrances on the west end of the building. Dave assisted in getting the correct sizes and arranged the installation of the new glass. The old glass panels were leaking so this upgrade will improve the energy
efficiency of our building. THANK YOU!

NEWS OUT OF THE GUTTERS:
Bowling Stuff
BOWLING MISCELLANY
Last month I mentioned that we hoped to put signage in the entry to the bowling
lanes as surprisingly many members don’t realize we have bowling available. We’re
talking about the curved hallway that leads to the lanes but as a person looks at that
hallway there is no clue as to where it leads. By the time you read this there should
be some identification that hopefully will entice members to enter the bowling area
and actually bowl. At all you can bowl for only $5 it’s cheap entertainment.
Remember, we have rental shoes and gutter bumpers for youths.
We could still use more bowlers, especially as subs, in the Monday night league. For
more info or interested contact me at [email protected].
The Monday night league had to downsize from 5 member teams to 4 members in
order to field six teams to match the number of lanes. Last season we had 5 member
teams but only 5 teams. I remain disappointed that we couldn’t recruit more bowlers
so as to retain the 5 member teams. Going to a 4 member team means teams had to
lose a teammate to form a 4 member team. Hopefully over this bowling season we
can recruit enough new bowlers to go back to 5 members. Why not come down some
Monday evening to peruse the league and see what you are missing.
Kyle Skoug, our new bar manager, and Nick Krause, both great bowlers, are working
on organizing a 9 pin tap tournament. Being a members only club presents a problem
in getting enough participants but by inviting other central Wisconsin Elk Lodges to
compete, and if members are allowed to invite one or more guests to join the tourna-
ment then we should have a good turnout. Kyle and Nick, I’m at your service in re-
gard to ideas on promoting the event.
Reminder, we have a collection box in the lower lounge for your empty printer
cartridges.
Question of the month: What is the most popular indoor sport in America?
Answer: Bowling. 100,000,000 Americans bowl at least once a year. Let’s make it
100,000,010 or more.
Bob Dustrude, Ace sports reporter. “So great he’s jealous of himself”
It’s not the lanes...it’s not the ball...I just suck
