A Message from the President

Happy Fall to you and your Newfs. Fortunately, the weather appears to be trending cooler which I know my dogs definitely appreciate! With our successful water tests October 1st and 2nd at Castaic Lake and the upcoming NCSD water test in Coronado on Sunday, October 16th, our 2016 water training season is nearing its conclusion. Special thanks to Emily Floyd for agreeing to chair the water test. She had a stellar committee, and several club members with committee experience stepped in to make sure her first experience in this role was a positive one. All of the details of the weekend’s event will be provided by Emily in your next issue of Pawprints, so I’ll leave those to her. In the meantime, you can check out some photos on Lynn Hirth’s website at www.imageevent.com/hirth. We are grateful to Lynn for capturing the event on Saturday and to Debby Rothwell for her photography on Sunday.

Our Annual Picnic and Election Meeting will be held on October 23 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach. Helen Do is chairing this event and details can be found on page 16. This is always a fun event with activities for everyone and their dogs, so please plan to join us for at least a couple of hours if you’re available. If you’re interested in learning more about draft training, I’m sure several of us will be starting fall draft training that day, as well. If you’re interested in draft training, please let me know so that you are added to the e-mail distribution list for draft training.

Speaking of draft training, our fall draft test is right around the corner. It will be held at O’Melveny Park in Granada Hills on Sunday, December 11th and will be judged by our own Debby Rothwell and Erin Zimmer! We are always in need of stewards to help at events, and stewarding is a great way to learn more about draft training. You can contact Test Chair Jo Ann Stark at [email protected] if you’d like to help out.

Just around the corner is our NCA Regional Specialty which will be held at the Polo Grounds in Indio on Friday, January 6th. You can find more details about the event and volunteer opportunities within this newsletter.

As a reminder, dues renewal notices for the 2016-2017 club year were mailed out in early August. If you’ve already sent in your renewal, thank you for your response and continued membership in the NCSC. If you haven’t sent in your renewal form, please do so as soon as possible. We’ve included a renewal form in case you misplaced it. I’d like to get the Club Directory out earlier this year, and I need all renewals submitted before I can do that.

It is with great sadness that I inform you that the NCSC has lost another of its founding members. Ruth Beck passed away at her home on June 19th. She is survived by her husband Chuck, also a founding member of the NCSC. They had been long-time residents of California and moved to Oregon about ten years ago where they were active members of the NCNC. Please keep Chuck and the rest of the Beck family in your thoughts.

Our NCSC Board for 2016-2017 will begin their assignments after our annual picnic. I'd like to thank Mark Banda and Melanie Bigelow for their years of service to the NCSC Board. They have both been invaluable and willing to help out in any capacity needed. Please be sure to thank them for their service when you see them at a club event. Coming on to the Board are Ellen Selsted and Marian Howie. Welcome aboard, ladies!

I hope to see you at a club event soon. Get out and enjoy the cooler weather, and give your Newf(s) a giant hug from me.

  Newfondly,

-Karrie Cook NCSC President

Teresa & Tristan Wallin “Trinity Cove’s Zeus on the Loose” was born on February 12, 2016, and has joined our very active family - always busy camping, hiking, and playing in the ocean. We are very excited to participate in water work with Zeus, since he is a natural at getting wet and playing in the water (and water dish!). My son, Tristan, is attending College of the Canyons, locally in Santa Clarita, CA and is an avid sports enthusiast. He and Zeus are inseparable, since Zeus loves to retrieve and chase balls until we can’t toss them any more! I retired from Law Enforcement and am presently working for DHL Global Forwarding as the Western Regional Security Manager, and when I am away - Zeus is kept busy by his grandmother, Paulette, who he enjoys playing in the garden with. We are a first time Newfie family, and we couldn’t love our pup more! Zeus has a Husky sister, Maya, who is 8-years old, and the two love to play.

Chato - Celebrating a Birthday In January of 2009 Rescue received notice of 6, 10 to 11 week old Newfy pups in Bakersfield. I was living in Visalia at the time and volunteered to be the contact and meet with the woman who had the pups. Long story short, I came home with Chato, the other 5, including Katie were adopted out via club rescue.

I had Murray, a senior rescue (Laurie Shapiro just knew Murray was to be mine!) at home along with Webster, a rescued Newf/Chow, mix, also a senior, from Noah's Bark out of Manhattan Beach.

Chato was lovingly raised by Murray and Webster for a year before I lost Murray at the end of January 2010 and then Webster at the beginning of April that same year. Each day I am reminded of both Murray and Webster by Chato's actions, character, and idiosyncrasies. Just wanted to share Chato's story with you (I know this is not Pawprints material), and in case you do birthday pics of seniors, being it is his 8th birthday, I have attached a couple to choose from.

I live in AZ now, but when I lived in CA was quite active with the club, being a steward for the water test, Special Olympics, fundraising, etc.

Maggie Sones Dear Ones, Our beloved Maggie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Monday August 22. She sheltered our foster pooch, Dino, in his final days, was delightful family member to all of us and more recently "Alpha Dog" to our rambunctious Bella (formerly known as Chiva).

We miss her sweet "singing" and affectionate ways and have lost pieces of our heart with her passing.

A NOTE FROM CHARLIE

Hello, Charlie Howie here again!

I've had a busy time since my last letter so thought an update would be welcomed :)

Mom has been taking Juneau & I to Castaic lake twice a week, and I love it and have a good time.

Of course I have to try and be very clever and focused to "get" things, but its so worth it for the scrummy hot dogs, popcorn chicken and sausages, although I am struggling with getting focus some of the time!

Mom is now getting excited and nervous about the 1st & 2nd October.

I don't know when that is, but she says I have to wish good luck to every one of my friends who have been working really hard at the lake since I have been going, and who are entered in the NCSC water test, again I don't really know what that is.

So "good luck" everyone, its going to be an adventure for me, hope to please my mom of course.

See you all there!

Love Charlie

RESCUE REPORT October - November 2016 by Laurie Shapiro

MAVERICK - Available! Maverick is a 2 year old male who was turned over to rescue by his owners because he was not getting along with their 8 year old male Newfoundland. He is a good boy who seems to have had very little socialization or training, and he has a LOT of energy! The Marlow family with their 4 (human) boys was up for the challenge and has been fostering him. Their Newfs Betsy and Lucy have been helping, too. Maverick survived his trip to the vet (with lots of treats) and is a healthy boy. We are looking for his perfect fit for a forever home. Big thanks to the Marlow family for transporting and fostering Maverick.

PAWPRINTS OCT - NOV 2016

CHIVA - Adopted! This cute and active pet shop Landseer girl was reluctantly given up by her family at 16 months due to multiple severe family hardships. Mark Banda was our rescue liaison, getting young Chiva (a soccer name I am told) from her family and meeting up with her foster family Drew and Susan Sones. Chiva was promptly re-named Bella and she is a beauty as her new name proclaims. Happily, in her puppy zooming she showed respect for frail Maggie, her housemate. It was soon discovered that Bella LOVES water in all forms, as hilarious videos of Bella and sprinklers were shared. Since Susan and Drew have never successfully fostered a dog to adoption by others, it was no surprise when we were notified that Bella was staying with

them. Here are a few words from Susan: “Bella has a fondness for "borrowing" a sock or slipper or washcloth or hiking boot (!) and leaving them on the patio, lawn or driveway. Every morning there is a surprise waiting for us out side. This week Drew trimmed hedges and Bella is assisting him with clean up by moving small branches and little pieces of wood from one side of the yard to the other!”Bella is helping to heal the Sones family’s collective broken heart with her puppy antics and love of fun. We expect her to enjoy a very long and happy life with them. Congratulations Susan, Drew and Aimee.

COLE – Permanent Foster!Cole continues to hang in there with Woody Smith. He has

experienced some end of summer hot spots, but they are healing well. We are grateful to have such a committed foster home for Cole.

UPDATE: Emma Forney - Rainbow Bridge I received a sad but not unexpected email from Pamela Forney recently. Here is her update on Emma in her own words: “I guess I thought she was just going to live forever………… She was such a good girl…………..14 years and 3 months to the day.  We had her for 13 years and almost 2 months.  Thank you to you and June for letting us rescue her!

I had to be gone this weekend and the girls were staying home with Dave because it was supposed to be warm at the show and we did not have air conditioning. Had a long talk with Emma before I went and told her I knew the days were getting a little harder and if it was her time I understood.  Told her all those things we remember and cherish about our furry ones………..all the fun times and all the friends she had at Rainbow bridge including Abbey, Sam & Missy…………..

So I left on Friday afternoon and on Saturday in the middle of the show Dave calls to say it is her time……………My heart just shattered inside because she was so much my little girl.  And then quickly put itself back together because in all her years Emma never whined or cried…………she was quietly stoic for all her friends…………

!19

I know she is happy and peaceful………………still…………….I am going to miss her!”

NOTEFROMLAURIE: Emma was the first Newf Pamela & Dave Forney adopted from our rescue, way back in 2003 when June Gibson was fostering and I was arranging adoptions along with my other duties. The Sam and Missy that Pamela mentions were also through our rescue, as was Emma’s surviving “adopted sister” Gypsy. Abbey was adopted through a different rescue before Pamela moved to California. These people are truly committed to rescue!

UPDATE: Maggie Sones - Rainbow Bridge

After less than 2 years as a member of the Sones family, Maggie has crossed over at the tender age of 8. She and her house-mate Bert came into rescue in Autumn of 2014 when their owner died. Maggie was to be “fostered” by the Sones, but you know how that goes! She enjoyed two wonderful years with Drew, Susan and family. At various times she shared her home and her people with Dino, and more recently foster girl Chiva. As she aged it was discovered that Maggie had heart trouble, but medications and TLC allowed her to enjoy a fairly normal life. Unfortunately she also developed non-operable orthopedic issues which became quite severe. When her orthopedic problems took away her dignity and good quality of life, Susan and Drew had to make a very hard but compassionate decision on her behalf. We are grateful to the entire Sones family for their love and care for Maggie.

HELP NEEDED!

YOUR HELP IS STILL NEEDED! Thank you to Lori MacPherson & Linda Henry for volunteering to help submit our rescue paperwork to area animal shelters. When SCNRC is on file as an Adoption Partner at area shelters it will add to our credibility as a legitimate rescue group, speed up the release process, and hopefully improve communications with the shelter if a Newf is taken in.

THERE ARE MORE WAYS YOU CAN HELP THAT DON’T INVOLVE FOSTERING A DOG! SCNRC is planning to have a co-op Rescue Boutique along with Northern California at the NCA National Specialty in Oregon next April. Anyone who is driving up and can spare a little room in their vehicle for a box or 2 of rescue T-shirts can be of great help! Once we are in Oregon with the booth set up and running, I will also need some volunteer salespeople. No experience necessary, basic math skills helpful. Please contact me at [email protected] if you can help

ANOTHER WAY you can help Rescue that takes very little time and zero expense is to register (or re-register) with Ralphs Grocery Community Program. SCNRC earns between 1-3% of the money you spend on groceries! We love FREE money! If you shop at Ralphs at all – even just a little – go to www.ralphs.com, sign up for an account, and then link your account through Community Contributions to So Cal Newfoundland Rescue / group # 90895. We will earn even more money if you encourage relatives, friends and co-workers to sign up as well. This is absolutely the easiest way I have to earn money for our Newfs in need. Please contact me if you need help getting signed up with Ralphs.

GOOD KARMA Recently I was contacted by a long ago acquaintance – a woman I know from my days of fraternizing with Golden Retriever Rescue, training classes with Sue Myles, and a fellow client of Arbor Animal Hospital. Janis Morris wanted to meet for coffee and catch up on all things dog. We met for a bit, chatted about the past and got caught up to the present. We then discovered we were both headed to Arbor Animal Hospital. Once in the hospital lobby I introduced her to Susan Sones and Chiva – the foster team I was there to meet – and also Lynn Hirth and Imp who coincidentally were there. After the Newfy circus died down and Janis had conducted her business, I learned that she had made a $100.00 contribution towards our foster girl’s vet services that day!!! I am remarkably touched by her thoughtful and generous gesture, and so glad I made time for an old acquaintance.
