Virginia Allred Stacey Jr/Sr High School Receives
College Readiness Recognition
Virginia Allred Stacey Jr/Sr High School has received the “2012
College Readiness Award” from the Texas ACT Council for
increasing the number of students taking the ACT Assessment
over the past five years and significantly increasing their level of
achievement and college readiness. The Texas ACT Council is
comprised of secondary and postsecondary educators who
advise ACT, Inc. on the utilization of ACT programs and services
in Texas schools and colleges. The ACT Assessment is the
college admissions test that is used and accepted by all colleges
nationwide and throughout Texas.
According to Karen L. Pennell, Assistant Vice President and ACT
Southwest Regional Manager:
“The Texas ACT Council wanted to recognize those Texas high
schools that have made significant strides in increasing the
college and career readiness of their graduates as demonstrated
by their ACT score increases over the past five years. This can
only happen as a result of the high school’s faculty and staff
efforts and the dedication of Stacey Jr/Sr High School students
and parents to focus on college and career readiness and raise
the level of academic readiness for all students. Only 170 high
schools in Texas were honored for this superior level of
accomplishment which represents only 9% of all Texas high
schools. Stacey should be proud of their faculty, staff, and
students! Congratulations!”

FALL CARNIVAL SUCCESS! Written by Megan Fleming, 9th grader and s2s member
On October 19th, we had our annual Fall Festival. The Student2Student (s2s) club had a wonderful booth!
Thanks to Peter Piper Pizza for donating prizes; we could not have done it without them.
Our booth was a total success! We raised a good amount of money for our organization.

1. What college do you attend?
I went to Northwest Vista College for my basics and then transferred my third year in college to University
of Texas in San Antonio for my B.A. in History with a concentration in Social Studies. 2. What’s your family like?
My family is wonderful. I have 2 sons. Haiden will be 8 in November, and Sebastian will be 5 in
November. I have a wonderful husband who is also a great dad, and my grandma and grandpa live 5 miles
away from me. We love to bar-b-q and spend quality time together. 3. What made you want to become a teacher? If you could pick anything else to be, what would you pick?
I wanted to become a teacher because I grew up with a lot of adversity and through my challenges in my
life I had many adults and teachers in my life who inspired me and believed in me. As I got older, I realized
that those teachers that were there for me inspired me to want to be a part of a young person‟s life the same
way. I can‟t picture myself doing anything else in my life. 4. What do you think about Stacey High School so far?
I really think Stacey High School is a special place. After 2 months of being a part of this school, I can see
so many wonderful things about the students, the staff, and the environment here. I feel really blessed to be
a part of this school and doing something I love. I‟m getting to know my students little by little, and I hope
they are learning and enjoying my way of teaching. 5. What’s something people don't really know about you?
Something most people won‟t guess about me is that I have eclectic taste in music, art, and hobbies. I like
country music, rap, Rembrant, Degas, crocheting, hiking, scrap-booking, photography, traveling, skiing,
and watching my sons play sports. 6. What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?
I listen to all types of country, Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift, Tim
McGraw, and George Strait. I also love rap music. I like „90s rappers like Biggie Smallz, TuPac, Emeniem,
Nicki Minaj, 7. Where are you from?
I‟m from Castroville, Texas. I grew up there and went to Medina Valley until my High School graduation. I
also lived in Austin, Texas for a while my 8th grade year.
8. If you could pick anywhere to visit, where would you go?
If I could pick anywhere to visit, I would go on a trip from Peru to see Macchu Picchu down through Chile
to see Easter Island, one of the wonders of the world. 9. What’s it like being on the city council?
Being on the city council is not what I expected. I was never a “political person,” but I enjoy being able to
participate in the process of decision-making and policy-making in my city. I feel that my city needs me to
be there as a representative of the people and that gives me a great sense of empowerment. 10. Where do you see yourself in twenty years?
In twenty years, it is very hard to say where I will be. I imagine being a great mom forever, so no matter
what job I‟m doing or where I live, I will always be a huge part of my kids‟ lives. I want to see them go off
to college and become important people in the world.
At times I see myself teaching for thirty more years, and other times I feel that it is pretty unpredictable
where life will take me. Ten years ago I would have never thought I‟d be doing half of the things I‟m doing
now. I‟d like to try to plan for my future, but leave my options open because the world has so much to offer
and I will never limit myself.

On Friday October 18th, PTSO hosted the annual Fall Carnival. Here there were your unique carnival games, food, face painting, and the 8th graders even presented a magic show.
Through the duration of the carnival, the variety of classes and clubs “competed” with one another to see who could raise the most most money. Although there was no clear winner, the twenty-five booths managed to raise a whopping $3,900! Hopefully you were able to be a part
of the fun, if not we will see you at the next Fall Carnival!

District Cross Country
By Abi Arndt, Sophomore
On Wednesday, October 24th, Stacey Cross Country competed at the District Cross Country Meet in Harper. The meet was a success for Stacey, with almost every runner who competed winning an individual or team award, and 13
of our Varsity runners qualifying to compete in the Region 4 Cross Country Championship.
Competing for Varsity Boys, Senior Cory Johnson placed second and Sophomore Brady Epley placed sixth. As a team, Varsity Boys placed second,
and will be competing in regionals. The Junior Varsity Boys also did very well, with Freshman Jason
Rodriguez placing fifth, Freshman Greg Quintano eighth, Junior Blake Arthur in ninth, and Freshman David Turner in tenth place. Junior Varsity Boys team also
won second place as a team. In the Varsity Girls division, Sophomore Abi Arndt finished in 7th place. As a team, Varsity Girls placed third and will be competing in regionals.
Competing at their last meet, the Junior Cross Country team also had a great meet.
Christen Ellingwood, eighth-grader, won first place in the Junior High girls race. Ashley Epley placed second and Ashley Arndt placed ninth in the seventh-
grade girls division. As a team, the Junior High girls won second overall. Even though there were not enough boys to compete as a team, the two
middle-schoolers did well. Elijah Morales placed fifth in the eighth grade and Patrick McCormick placed sixth in the seventh grade.
Overall, the Stacey Cross Country team has much to be proud of. All of the runners ran exceptionally well and deserve the medals they earned.
