Each year at this time our nation recognizes the contribution that the military child makes as their parent or parents serve either on Active Duty or in the Reserve components of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard. After twelve years of war, though our country is eager to turn its attention elsewhere, the acknowledgement of this very special group of children is more important than ever.

Today, there are nearly two million military-connected children. As students, they move and change schools about three times more frequently than their civilian classmates. They live with the challenges presented by not only frequent moves, but parental deployments, and a host of life transitions that include reintegration and, for too many, the return of a profoundly changed parent. More than 900,000 of these children have had a parent deploy multiple times and more than 44,700 children are living with a parent’s wound, injury, illness, or death. For most military-connected children, they have known the meaning of war and felt the impacts of it on their family throughout their young lives. In their own way, they too, serve our country. The month of April is a perfect time to pause and acknowledge their sacrifices, resilience, and strength of character. Whether it is by public proclamations, special activities and events, or simply a few kind words spoken to a military-connected child, we encourage everyone to seek out opportunities to express appreciation for these remarkable children. We believe that our country’s future depends on our collaborative effort to grow qualified, well-educated citizens who will selflessly serve and contribute to our nation’s best interest. As we look to the future, these military-connected children and youth are worthy of recognition now.

Students from Ms. Motz’s second grade class wrote a poem about butterflies after watching

Painted Lady butterflies hatch out of their chrysalis. Second graders have been

studying the life cycle of insects for science.

Come out and enjoy the beautiful roses at Stacey! They are in full bloom. Not only do they

look pretty, but they also smell amazing. Lackland ISD staff trimmed them back in February.

The beds of roses in these photos are from the back entrance to the Stacey office. These beds

were planted by the Stacey Class of 2005 in memory of their former classmate, Steffen Taplin,

who was killed in an auto accident in Japan shortly after his graduation from Yokota High

School.

TACO PARTY!! By Meagan Fleming

Mrs. Duron’s Family and Community Service class is nearing the end of its Pre-K Nutrition

project. This time, students had their children prepare tacos. When starting out, they read

the book, Dragons Love Tacos. It was a cute book about dragons having a taco party and

how they can’t eat salsa. The Pre-K students figured out how dragons breathe fire! Next,

they went into the kitchen to make their own tacos. In the process, they all learned how a

taco has every part of the MyPlate in it! After learning about tacos and trying salsa, they

did a quick MyPlate craft to test their knowledge on the MyPlate. Students played My

Plate Bingo, and every child was a winner! Finally, to finish their taco party, they took

pictures with their groups and their super cool taco party hats. This lesson was a success,

and we are looking forward to the last 3e’s Grant Lesson in May.

Dear parents of rising Seventh Graders,

In order to comply with Texas Immunization Requirements, we are notifying you of

requirements for all seventh graders. All students entering seventh grade are

required to have the following immunizations:

1) 2 doses of Varicella vaccine (chicken pox). A written statement from a parent

attesting to the child’s positive history of chicken pox illness is acceptable in lieu

of either dose.

2) 1 dose of Tetanus, Diptheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) if at least 5 years have

passed since the last dose of tetanus-diptheria containing vaccine.

3) 1 dose of Meningococcal Vaccine

If your child will be attending Lackland ISD during the 2013-2014 school year, we

strongly urge you to bring proof of above immunizations directly to the school nurse’s

office before the end of this school year.

Please be aware that students without proper documentation or a valid exemption will

not be allowed in class on the first day of school in August until we receive updated

immunization records.
