Oceanography Unit
• A. List the 4 parts of the water cycle• B. What process causes liquid droplets to
appear on the sides of cold drinks on hot days• C. What process causes a fish tank to
eventually lose all its water
Goal: I will know why there are and what causes the different layers in the ocean
Agenda1.WarmUp Summative2.Cotd3.Oceanography Intro Video4.Ocean Layers Lab5.Salinity Poster
Open Note
• A. If cold water is placed in warm water it will……
Biology WarmUp4-27-12
• Tell me what a genus is…• A division of similar species
Agenda1.WarmUp2.Cotd3.Reading Guide4. 7 minute Youtube Lecture5.Brainpop Clicker
Geoscience WarmUp5-1-12
• How does temperature change as you move down through the ocean
• It gets colder as you go down, there is a line called the thermocline where it gets cold very fast
Agenda1.WarmUp2.Cotd ( 5)3.Salinity Poster (15 minutes)4. Bill Nye Oceanography ( 8 minutes)
Geoscience WarmUp Summative 5-3-12
Geoscience WarmUp Summative 5-3-12
• 1. List two ways that salinity changes in the ocean…..(SALT CONCENTRATION IS CHANGED)
• 2. What temperature is the water at the bottom of the ocean?
Agenda1.WarmUp Summative2.Cotd ( 5)3. Salinity Poster (5 minutes)4. Bill Nye Oceanography ( 8 minutes)5.BrainPop: Oceans6. Millionaire Game

Instructions For Salt Water/Fresh Water
Read and follow, thanx)1. Fill one plastic tub ¾ full of water2. Add water to the salt in the flask up to the 100 ml line3. Color the flask water red with 3-4 drops of red food coloring4. Stir until you can’t see any more salt in the flask5. Poor SLOWLY into the tub… do a little bit at a time so you don’t
mix the two liquids too much/too fast6. Fill in the observations and draw7. Add 2 drops of another food coloring to top of tub, do not mix
just observe and draw8. Use you knowledge of salinity to make as many layers as possible
Instructions for Cold/Warm Water• Instructions: Read and follow, thanx)1. Fill one plastic tub half full of water, Ask Mason to go into
back room and microwave for 75 seconds2. Fill one beaker ¼ full of ice cold water from Mason3. Color the beaker water blue with 2-3 drops of blue food
coloring4. Pour Beaker slowly and carefully into the tub… do a little
bit at a time so you don’t mix the two liquids too much5. Fill in the observations and draw6. Add 2 drops to top of tub at two opposite corners, do not
mix just observe and draw
Conclusion Questions (Salt water added)1.Describe what happened when you added the salt water2.Why did this happen?3.When you added the yellow food coloring, what did you see?4.Does salt make water heavier or lighter?5.What is another name for the heaviness of an object?6.Why didn’t the layers mix?
Conclusion Questions (Ice water added)1.Describe what happened when you added the cold water2.Why did this happen?3.When you added the yellow food coloring, what did you see?4.Does extra salt make water heavier or lighter?5.What is another name for the heaviness of an object?6.Why didn’t the layers mix?
