OARNorthwestBackgrounderOARNorthwestwasfoundedin2005byfourUniversityofPugetSoundRowingalumniandteammatesasanon‐profitorganizationwhosegoalwastoparticipateinthefirstrowingraceacrosstheNorthAtlanticOcean.OARNorthwestconnectswithpartnerstoreachourexpeditionfundraisinggoals,whilepropellingbusinessesandstudentstotheirownextraordinaryachievement.Throughoutthe18monthprojecttimeline,OARNorthwestpromotedcorporatesponsorsinSeattlemediaandgainedinternationalexposureonnationalnewsnetworksCNN&ABC,andprogramslikeABC’sGoodMorningAmericaand20/20.Throughourefforts,wedonatedover$50,000toAmericanLungAssociationofWashington.Theteam(includingJordanHanssenandGregSpooner)exceededallexpectations,enduring72‐dayscrossing3,100nauticalmilesoftheNorthAtlantictowinthefirstinternationaloceanrowingracefromNewYorktoEngland.Bymakinglandfall,OARnorthwestbecamethefirstboattoeverrowfrommainlandUSAtomainlandUKwithoutassistance–recognizedbytheGuinnessWorldRecordorganization.Aftergainingtwonewmembersin2009,OARNorthwestisnowaninternationalorganizationwithofficesinWashingtonStateandBritishColumbia,withboardmembersfromacrossNorthAmerica.ThecrewforthenextAtlanticcrossingincludeGuinnessWorldRecordHoldersandNorthAtlanticOceanRowingRaceveteransJordanHanssenandGregSpooner,BeijingOlympicGoldMedalistAdamKreekandNationalLevelLightweightRowerRichardTarbill.
ThisPacificNorthwest‐based501(c)3organizationiscurrentlyraisingawarenessandfundsfortheirAfricatotheAmericasrowingexpedition,benefitingRightToPlayInternational.OARNorthwestprovesthatsolidteamsfacedwithextremechallengescaninspireexcellence.

Apublishedauthor,he’swrittenstoriesonabicycletripacrossAustralia,andhiscircumnavigationofWashingtonState’sOlympicPeninsula.HeisfinishinghisamusingandexcitingbookabouttheNorthAtlantictrip,scheduledtohitbookstoresinspring2012.AfterwinningthefirstrowingraceacrosstheNorthAtlanticOceanhewasmentallystrengthenedby,“thehardestthingIcouldhaveeverimagined.”HisresultingconfidenceandincrediblestorieshaveinspiredJordantodocumenthisadventuresinanentertainingway.AdeeploveofexplorationandtravelhasfuelledJordan’sdesiretodreamupsomeunbelievablejourneys:hikinginTasmania,ridingbambooraftsinnorthernThailand,andcyclingtheFrenchAlpswerejustthebeginning.Mostrecently,hecanoed(andportaged)over200milesofNewMexico’sRioGrande.Inbetweenlivingandrecordingtheseadventures,hestruggleswiththecontinuousprojectofrenovatinghis96year‐oldhouse.Jordanisproudtobepartofsuchastronganddiverseteam,supportingRighttoPlay.

RichardisexcitedabouttheupcomingAfricatotheAmericas2012rowingexpeditionandthechancetoworkwithRighttoPlay.Hebelievesthatthisupcomingadventurecontinuallywillputthecrewinuncomfortablesituations.Thiswillforcethemtofocusandreflectonwhatisthemostimportantinlife,ratherthansettlingforthefamiliar,andcomfortable.
