OARNorthwestBackgrounderOARNorthwestwasfoundedin2005byfourUniversityofPugetSoundRowingalumniandteammatesasanon‐profitorganizationwhosegoalwastoparticipateinthefirstrowingraceacrosstheNorthAtlanticOcean.OARNorthwestconnectswithpartnerstoreachourexpeditionfundraisinggoals,whilepropellingbusinessesandstudentstotheirownextraordinaryachievement.Throughoutthe18monthprojecttimeline,OARNorthwestpromotedcorporatesponsorsinSeattlemediaandgainedinternationalexposureonnationalnewsnetworksCNN&ABC,andprogramslikeABC’sGoodMorningAmericaand20/20.Throughourefforts,wedonatedover$50,000toAmericanLungAssociationofWashington.Theteam(includingJordanHanssenandGregSpooner)exceededallexpectations,enduring72‐dayscrossing3,100nauticalmilesoftheNorthAtlantictowinthefirstinternationaloceanrowingracefromNewYorktoEngland.Bymakinglandfall,OARnorthwestbecamethefirstboattoeverrowfrommainlandUSAtomainlandUKwithoutassistance–recognizedbytheGuinnessWorldRecordorganization.Aftergainingtwonewmembersin2009,OARNorthwestisnowaninternationalorganizationwithofficesinWashingtonStateandBritishColumbia,withboardmembersfromacrossNorthAmerica.ThecrewforthenextAtlanticcrossingincludeGuinnessWorldRecordHoldersandNorthAtlanticOceanRowingRaceveteransJordanHanssenandGregSpooner,BeijingOlympicGoldMedalistAdamKreekandNationalLevelLightweightRowerRichardTarbill.

Apublishedauthor,he’swrittenstoriesonabicycletripacrossAustralia,andhiscircumnavigationofWashingtonState’sOlympicPeninsula.HeisfinishinghisamusingandexcitingbookabouttheNorthAtlantictrip,scheduledtohitbookstoresinspring2012.AfterwinningthefirstrowingraceacrosstheNorthAtlanticOceanhewasmentallystrengthenedby,“thehardestthingIcouldhaveeverimagined.”HisresultingconfidenceandincrediblestorieshaveinspiredJordantodocumenthisadventuresinanentertainingway.AdeeploveofexplorationandtravelhasfuelledJordan’sdesiretodreamupsomeunbelievablejourneys:hikinginTasmania,ridingbambooraftsinnorthernThailand,andcyclingtheFrenchAlpswerejustthebeginning.Mostrecently,hecanoed(andportaged)over200milesofNewMexico’sRioGrande.Inbetweenlivingandrecordingtheseadventures,hestruggleswiththecontinuousprojectofrenovatinghis96year‐oldhouse.Jordanisproudtobepartofsuchastronganddiverseteam,supportingRighttoPlay.

AlifelongresidentofthePacificNorthwest,hewasencouragedbyhisparentstobecomenotjustaparticipant,butastudentoflife;toembracechallengesandmasterthem.Richardgrewupplayingtheclassicalviolinatanearlyage,performingwiththeNationalYouthSymphonyandacceptedtotheUniversityofWashingtononaviolinscholarship.WithnoexperiencehejoinedtheprestigiousHuskymen’sheavyweightcrewteamandrowedfouryearsasalightweight,givinguphisviolinscholarshiptorow.Aftercollege,helearnedtoscullandcompeteataninternationallevel.

EarningaB.Sc.inAeronauticalandAstronauticalEngineering,hebecameanAerodynamicFlightTestEngineeratBoeinginSeattle.Currently,hehelpsflighttestthenew747‐8and787‐8Dreamliner.

RichardisexcitedabouttheupcomingAfricatotheAmericas2012rowingexpeditionandthechancetoworkwithRighttoPlay.Hebelievesthatthisupcomingadventurecontinuallywillputthecrewinuncomfortablesituations.Thiswillforcethemtofocusandreflectonwhatisthemostimportantinlife,ratherthansettlingforthefamiliar,andcomfortable.
