A Beit Midrash is both a place and an experience. A Beit Midrash literally is a Home of Study, a room filled with Jewish texts traditional and modern. A Beit Midrash is also an experience in which traditional Jewish texts are studied to seek out meaning and understanding. Those who come to the Beit Midrash are active learners with varying degrees of familiarity with text study, Hebrew language, and Jewish knowledge. Judaism imagines relationships between people mediated by text as groups of learners work together to wrestle with a text until it yields blessing.

Jews and Christians each have distinctive ways of celebrating life and of honoring the dead. This course explores the themes of reverence for life, time, and creation that are fundamental to the ritual prayers and liturgies for the dead that are central to the Jewish and Christian traditions. Sessions will include a study of taharah (ritual purification of the body), shmirah (escorting the body), anointing of the sick, funeral liturgy, and burial practices.

Mishnah is the “other half” of the Torah received by Moses at Sinai. This concentrated book of Jewish law will be our guide as we wander through Seder Moed, the Order of the Mishnah concerning holidays. This is a text class and texts will be presented in both Hebrew and English. Beginners are most welcome.

Pirkei Avot is one of the best known and most repeated of Jewish texts. This favorite tractate of the Mishna is composed of universal, ethical teachings of the Rabbis and famous for such maxims as “If I am only for myself, who am I?” (1:14) and “Say little and do much” (1:15).

This year we will study Yoma – Chapter 8 of the Talmud. “Yoma” means “the day” and is a reference to Yom Kippur. This chapter addresses the rules of “afflicting yourself” on Yom Kippur followed by a general consideration of repentance. This is a new chapter and class is not dependent on previous participation. Newcomers are welcome to join.

We will present the text in Hebrew/Aramaic with my full translation, and you will have before you both the Hebrew/Aramaic text and the translation offered by Adin Steinsaltz, as well as his notes.

You may or may not know that Rabbi Gruenberg was a political science major in college, and actually thought about going into politics. Naturally like all failed politicians, he became a pulpit rabbi. In the Jewish tradition, Civil Discourse has always been an ethos. In fact, given the political climate in America today, modelling civil discourse is an art that Jewish communities can practice to serve as a light unto the nations. Join Rabbi Gruenberg for a discussion on the hottest topics and issues facing society today. We will discuss Israel, the United States, and all things political refracted through the lens of Jewish values and focusing on the future of the relationship between these historic allies. This will be a fun and spirited class open to all, with the only rules being respectful listening and no interrupting.
