Together, we serve more than 900,000 people in 35 communities spread across 500 square miles of southeastern Michigan. Each hour you spend tending to patients, bringing comfort to families and helping our physicians and staff means so much to so many. MOMENT FOR MEDITATION Offers inspirational message
Oakwood Spiritual Support – with the help of a lot of friends – is offering a new service to the Oakwood community. Each weekday, staff, patients and family members can dial the Oakwood “Moment for Meditation” line to hear a recorded message of inspiration, encouragement and support. The number can be accessed from within Oakwood and from outside as well. Messages are recorded by a variety of Oakwood personnel and reflect a special thought, message or quote they would like to share. th Annual “Tree of Lights, sponsored by
Southshore’s Auxiliary Volunteers, was a huge success. Total donations received amounted to $19,585 and 100% of this amount will go towards the “Needy Patient Assistance” program at Southshore. Chairperson Norma Horvath, an Auxiliary Volunteer since 1999, commented that without all the help of the Auxiliary Volunteers, the success of T.O.L. event would not have been possible. In October, she and her “stuffing group” (Auxiliary Volunteers Shirley LaVigne, Noreen Petersen, Betty Lemerand, Betty Root, and Sandra Whitaker) met to prepare 958 mailings that were sent to OSMC doctors, area businesses, service organizations, dentists, community leaders, and past donors. On November 29, the T.O.L. tree-decorating group (Auxiliary Volunteers Cathy Cherpak, Caroline Leedy, Betty Root, and Norma Horvath) completed all of the decorating, including the placement of the “Southshore Angels” and the T.O.L. Memory Book which were placed near the tree. We had a total of 102 donors, all of whom are greatly appreciated for their generosity. There were 14 major donors (donations of $500 and over) and 17 special, personalized plaques were prepared and placed on the angels surrounding the tree. A total of 155 brass, personalized tree ornaments were prepared and placed on the tree. It was a BEAUTIFUL sight to behold! On January 4, our Auxiliary Volunteers (Cathy Cherpak, Caroline Leedy, Betty Root and Norma Horvath) came in to “un-decorated” the tree. ” All decorations and angels were packed away waiting for the 2012 OSMC “Tree of Lights.” Thanks to all who helped with Southshore’s 2011 “Tree of Lights” and a special thanks to the Oakwood Foundation for all of their help, especially John O’Rourke and Casey Laughlin. Totals for the other healthcare sites: Oakwood Common: $5,330; Oakwood Rehab & Skilled Nursing: $50.00; Oakwood Annapolis Hospital: $1,065; Oakwood Heritage Hospital: $240; Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center: $8,215

It is my pleasure to announce that Debra Gerlica has been appointed to the position of Manager of Volunteer Services for Oakwood Health Care System, effective Monday, March 19, 2012. In this role, Debra will be leading the volunteer program development and administration, the volunteer services representatives at each acute care site and she will facilitate the volunteer council. Debra brings to her new role over 20 years of professional volunteer experience. Before joining Oakwood she held professional positions at Alive Hospice of Nashville, Murfreesboro & St. Thomas Hospital, Mercy San Juan Medical Center and Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. In addition to her professional experience, Debra holds a Master of Business Administration and a certification in volunteer management (CVM). Oakwood’s Pursuit of Excellence and the Baldrige program help us improve how we deliver care
to our patients. The feedback Oakwood received from its recent site visit guides us in our
journey of continuous improvement.
Here’s what we learned from the Baldrige team:
Our strengths: We live our Credo, “Patients Come First,” by focusing on our patients, providing quality and safe
care, behaving ethically and serving our community. In addition, we use data to create well-thought-out ways of
doing things, and we include the entire organization in learning and using those methods. A good example is our
Service Excellence program.
Innovation: Some tools and programs we have developed are leading-edge, such as the Oakwood Physician
Leadership Academy and the Magnificent 7 videos we have for our Service Excellence program.
Opportunities to improve: Every organization can do better, even those recognized with an award or site visit.
Oakwood has learned that we may be able to do a better job with communication, achieving our action plans,
sharing best practices and helping our workforce to learn and grow. We can also regularly evaluate the methods
we use to conduct our business to reduce waste and be even more successful in meeting the needs of our
patients.
Here’s how you can help:

Important information for all Oakwood employees, volunteers, physicians, patients and visitors: As you know, our own policies indicate that the Oakwood is a tobacco-free organization. Tobacco use is prohibited both indoors and outdoors on any Oakwood property to create a healthier environment for our visitors, guests, employees, physicians, and volunteers.
The City of Dearborn has recently amended an existing ordinance prohibiting tobacco. This ordinance includes school and hospital properties and extends for 100 feet beyond the property line of a school or hospital. What does this mean for Oakwood?
• No patients, staff, physicians, visitors, volunteers or any person at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center is permitted to use any tobacco product within 100 feet of the hospital (or school) property. This includes lighted tobacco products as well smokeless or chewing tobacco. Note that this also includes the sidewalks in front of the hospital.
• The Dearborn Chief of Police will work with Oakwood security staff to appoint them as special police officers with the authority to issue citations for any violations of this ordinance.
• Anyone violating this ordinance is guilty of a civil infraction, punishable by a fine of $50.

Patrick Doute is an Outpatient Imaging greeter for Oakwood Southshore Medical Center and has been volunteering since October 2009. He enjoys his volunteer experience as a greeter because he loves interacting with everyone. Patrick takes the time to answer questions patients may have regarding their registration process. He even puts children at ease before testing by offering them candy. In addition to Patrick’s role, he also helps with training new volunteers as greeters. In 2011, Patrick received a Service Excellence award for being mentioned by Oakwood Southshore’s leadership team, patients, other volunteers, and even in the Press Ganey survey. We thank Patrick for volunteering his time and dedication and always demonstrating “Patients come first” attitude!

Social media tools allow people to share, collaborate and publish on the Internet. It is An online “conversation” that happens on sites such as Facebook and Twitter as well as in blogs, forums and other types of interactive sites. While at home, some Oakwood personnel/volunteers may be interested in engaging in Internet conversations to support Oakwood’s organizational objectives. We recognize the networking opportunities social media offers and truly appreciate the support staff and volunteers provide in promoting Oakwood’s mission, vision and values in the community. We encourage sharing your passion for Oakwood with others and remind you, even while not at Oakwood, to keep following policies and guidelines in mind. Follow all applicable Oakwood Policies. For example, you must not share confidential or proprietary information about Oakwood, and you must maintain patient privacy. Among the policies most pertinent to this discussion are those concerning patient confidentiality, government affairs, mutual respect, political activity, computer, e-mail and internet use, photography and video and release of patient information to media. Social media is a dynamic medium with Web sites, technology, access constantly evolving. Whenever in doubt about the appropriateness of posting any content, contact Strategic Communications at 313.586.5400. Remember: knowingly releasing patient information is in violation of HIPAA and can result in a one-year jail sentence and a $50,000 fine. The most important aspect to remember about social networking is that Oakwood’s Electronic communication policy and other policies apply in this medium. In any Electronic communication you should always adhere to our core values of Compassion, Respect, Excellence, Diversity and Ownership. Before participating in any of these activities, please familiarize yourself with the following policies found on OakNet or ask your volunteer representative for assistance.
Remember: Your online actions will be associated with our organization and have the power to influence our audience’s perceptions of Oakwood and our services.
SOCIAL NETWORKS encourage people to stay in contact with each other, often centered on the interests of their users (business networks, friends networks, tastes in music, etc.) BLOGS are (mostly individual) web sites with regular entries of commentary or description of events, which can be commented by readers. Many blogs have become a respected news sources in the fields of politics, science, technology, and entertainment. WIKIS are collection of web pages designed to allow anyone who accesses them to add or modify their content. They are typically used to store the collective knowledge of communities. EVALUATION COMMUNITIES provide collective evaluations (ratings) and comments on already existing web content or consumer products. TAGGING COMMUNITIES add categorizing keyword (tags) to existing online content, making it easier for other people to find and digest it. MICROBLOGS are a cross between blogs and instant messaging. Users can post short messages about updates, contribute to ongoing conversations or share links to blogs, articles, and pictures. SOCIAL MEDIA AGGREGATORS are tools to display content from various sources traditional news sources and news from the tools described above. This eliminates the need to visit many different websites to stay up-to-date.
