Nuclear Data Activities in Pakistan

Muhammad Shahid

PhD Student

Prof. Dr. G.N. Kim

Main Facilities

• Research Reactors (PAEC)

• Pelletron Accelerators (GCU Lahore &

QAU Islamabad)

• Medical Cyclotrons (PAEC & SKCMH)

3

Research Rectors

• PARR-1 operating at 10 MWth, swimming

pool type research reactor, utilizing LEU

silicide fuel.

• PARR-2 is a 30KWth tank in pool type

4

6

Experimental Facilities

• Ten irradiation sites for experimentation

• Five sites are inner sites

• Three sites are outer sites

• Diameter of each five inner and three

outer irradiation tubes is 22mm

• Two outer irradiation tubes are of 34 mm

diameter

8

Main Purpose of Reactors

• Production of radioisotopes for use in

nuclear medical centres

• Research in nuclear physics, nuclear

engineering, etc.

• Training of personnel for the operation/

maintenance of nuclear reactor

• Training of Nuclear Engineering student

etc.

NCP QAU Islamabad (2008)

Main research areas covered by 5MV Pelletron Tandem

Accelerator are:

•Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE)

•Rutherford and Non-Rutherford Backscattering

Spectroscopy (RBS)

•Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA)

•Gamma Ray Spectroscopy (GRS)

11

GCU Lahore (2008)

• 4MeV Pelletron accelerator has two active beam lines;

• one beam line is being effectively used for Proton

Induced X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy (PIXE) analysis

of materials by different science departments of the

university.

• The second beam line is used for irradiation of materials.

Medical Cyclotrons (2008)

• Total 2 in Pakistan

• One in INMOL

• One in SKMCH

• Purpose is PET imaging

INMOL Lahore

• 16.5 Mev cyclotron

• Can produce short-lived radioisotopes like

F-18, C-II, N-13 and 0-15.

SKMCH Lahore

Objectives of NUCDATA 2001

• To make nuclear data availability simple and efficient.

• To optimize activities with respect to different irradiation and decay schemes with the help of program developed in the database.

• To make queries for the unknown/ interfering peaks.

• To get information about the probable source(s) of radionuclide(s).

• To keep data traceability to IAEA database.

Cross Section Data 2005
