Premier Intermediate Hurling League
Our senior players returned to hurling action on
Sunday following their football exploits over the past
fortnight, with the arrival of Aghada in Brinny. From
the word go the result of this fixture was never in
doubt with Valleys very much on top. After fifteen
minutes it was 1.08 to 0.03 to the Rovers, the goal
coming from Jack Walsh. At half time Valleys led 3.17
to 1-05 with goals from Rory O’Sullivan and Eoin
O’Reilly. At this stage all the forwards and both
midfielders had got on the score sheet.
The second half was along a similar vein with the
Rovers adding a further 3.05 and the previous goal
scorers getting another each. Final score Valley Rovers
6.22 Aghada 1.11.

Minor P2 Hurling League
Valley Rovers P2 minor hurlers finally got their season going when they travelled to Newtownshandrum on Friday night. A lively Shandrum team got three early points but two points from Adam Kenneally and points from Aaron O’Leary and Cathal O’Sullivan valleys were down a point at half time 0-9 to 0-8. Valleys would regret conceding 1-1 in the first two minutes of the second half. They kept going and with scores from Cathal O’Sullivan and some excellent defending from Niall Lawton and Conor Hurley the game finished with Shandrum winning on a score line of 2-14 to 0-11. Team:

U10 Hurling League
Valley Rovers U10 boys finally got their first hurling
match of the year underway when they took on Erins
Own in Caherlag on Saturday. It was vital to get matches
started after the poor weather, pitch closures & limited
training on grass.
Two teams of 22 boys played and contested very well,
and although both teams lost against the strong
opposition there was little between them in score or
ability at both half time and final times. A very
encouraging start to the league, in which the kids can be
happy they held their own and fought for every ball!
Thanks to Erins Own for hosting us.

FE 15 HURLING P2 Championship Valley Rovers under 15s played Blarney in championship
hurling last Wednesday evening in Brinny. It was an
exciting game as the sides battled it out. Valley Rovers
started well with a good wind behind them getting the
first two points of the game. However, Blarney entered
the contest with a goal but Valleys answered that quickly
with a point from a free. It was then Blarney’s turn to
add a point. It was a very good contest between the
sides with some good displays of hurling. The score at
half time was Valley Rovers 1-7 to 2-2.
The second half saw some more excellent hurling from
both teams but it was Valleys continuous work rate
especially against a strong wind that saw them scoring a
further 1-4 unanswered until the 15th minute of the
second half when Blarney scored a point. Shortly after
this Blarney scored a goal from a penalty and quickly
followed it with another point from a 65. Just when it
looked as if Blarney might continue to close the gap
Valleys got another goal and a point. Blarney added two
more points to their score but at full time it was Valley
Rovers who were victorious with a final score of 3-12 to
3-6.

U14 Feile Hurling
Our U14 hurlers participated in the Premier U14 Feile
hurling competition played in St. Finbarr’s on Saturday.
We were drawn in a group with Eire Og and the hosts.
Following a minutes silence for our late Vice President
Hughie O’Donovan RIP, our first game was against Eire
Og and our lads settled very quickly with some fine
scores. We were well on top all over the field and the
introduction of all our panel of players didn’t slow our
momentum and we ran out easy winners against a
sporting Eire Og side. Final score Valley Rovers 5-10
Eire Og 0-4
As St. Finbarr’s had also comprehensively beaten Eire
Og our game against them was then the group final
with the winners going on to play the other group
winners (Ballygarvan) for a place in the finals weekend.
Against a very strong St. Finbarr’s side, our lads hurled
magnificently and were unlucky not convert a few
scoreable chances, turning over 0-6 to 0-2 behind at
the break.
In the second half we started well and managed to
bring the score back to 0-6 to 0-4, at that stage we felt
the game could have gone either way, but the Barrs
had that little bit more in reserve and pulled away to
end our gallant challenge on a final score of St. Finbarrs
0-10 Valley Rovers 0-4.
In the overall section final St. Finbarrs defeated
Ballygarvan 2-7 to 2-1
We have a great bunch of lads who can be very proud
of their display on Saturday and if they continue their excellent attendance at all train sessions, practice at
home at every opportunity and listen to their mentors
Page 5 of 11
they will be successful in the other competitions this year
and in their future playing days with the Rovers. Also a
big thanks to the three U13’s who participated on the
day.

U9 Hurling
Valley Rovers U9 hurling teams visited Bishopstown on a
sunny afternoon last Saturday, Apr 21st. After an
impressive outing against Eire Og on their first outing 2
weeks previously, they found it more challenging against
a physically strong Bishopstown team. Over 6 matches,
the teams came out honours even. There were some
excellent performances from Adam Brown and Nick Daly.
Charlie Kelleher Barry showed great tenacity to score a
winning goal and Jack Holland was charging through the
midfield at pace. Mark Dineen was commanding in
defence and Ben Sharpless demonstrated increasing
dominance in the midfield.
U8 Football Blitz What a magnificent day for our U8 Valley Rover boys.
The long awaited sun shine lifted their spirits to show
their growing football talents at the Ballincollig blitz
last Saturday morning. The Valley's boy levels of
excitement were high and through great passes,
strong kicks, skills and tenacity, they demonstrated a
solid and impressive performance against Ballincolllig
and Douglas. A fabulous morning, well done all!
Division 2 League Result:

Division 7 League Result:
Valley Rovers B 2-5 Kilshannig 7-9
Players stand for a minutes silence before the Division
7 league game in sunny Brinny in honour of the late
Bridget O’Brien, Cork ladies football stalwart. RIP.

The u12 Camogie team played in a Ballinhassig and
valley Rovers joint blitz in kinsale last day afternoon. We
had a super turnout of 21 players on a sunny dry day,
with wins against Ballinhassig & Ballygarvan, a draw with
Carrigaline & the one loss to Tracton. Big thanks to both
players and parents for their dedication.
Valley Rovers were represented by three girls on the
Cork U14 development squads over the weekend.
Games were held in Inniscarra & Ballyhea, with Grace
O'Dwyer, Cliodhna Prendergast & Fiona Twohig involved.
It's great to see another bunch of our girls been part of
the Cork development squads, a stepping stone to
greater things hopefully in the years to come.

When the news of our esteemed Vice-President, Hughie
O Donovan’s passing began to filter through
on Wednesday morning last 18th of April, it left a special
sadness for all in the Valley Rovers GAA club the wider
parish community and indeed further afield, especially
in the sporting, musical and entertainment world. But
no doubt the many happy memories which Hughie has
left especially for his beloved family will help to lift that
cloud.
Hughie was the eldest of nine children born to his
parents Maurice and Ciss , of Quarrys Cross.
Newcestown in August 1923. As a young man he
participated in the popular local sports of bowling and
gaelic football- he played with a number of GAA clubs
and in the winter hunted with his beloved Mossgrove
Sporting Hounds- of whom he composed a very famous
song which he included in his own CD a couple of years
ago with many other " Hughie Songs " which he sang at
various sessions including Bandon Singing Club, which he
proudly led in song and story every month. He was also
a popular guest in various C103 radio programs and each
year contributed his own special script to Innishannon
Candlelight.
In 1950 he married his late wife Mary (Curtin) of Kilmore
where he bought a farm, settled down and reared six
children.
In 1951 he helped with the refounding of the Upton
Harriers and at the time of his death was the Master of
the club. He was also National President of the Harrier
Association.
Hughie
O’Donovan
RIP
He was extremely proud of being elected Vice-
President of Valley Rovers - a position which was
especially suitable to his personality. Being a people
person he was very popular with all age groups and
was a regular attendee at the various training
sessions, club events and matches (including camogie
and ladies football). And when his beloved grandsons
Hughie and Noel continued to climb up the ranks of
the Rovers in both hurling and football he was their
most loyal supporter and he was very proud when
they were part of the club teams who brought county
championship honours to the parish.
Hughie, you will be remembered by many during a
very full filled life, and may the sound of the Hunting
Horn, the shrill of the match whistle, the sweet notes
of songs and the tap of the dancing shoes guide you
on your way to that Happy Hunting Ground and may
you rest in peace with your beloved wife Mary ,
daughter Marion and son Noel.

The club would like to thank all the members who
helped out with traffic control, parking & the guard of
