NSW State Election Priorities Our team is committed to representing the interests of medical students across NSW. In consultation with the NSW Medical Societies, the NSWMSC produced the following list of priorities for the upcoming NSW State Election 2015: A guaranteed internship position for every NSWtrained medical graduate Reviewing the NSW priority ranking system for internship applications Improved financial support for medical students during prevocational training Greater funding for mental health support during all aspects of a doctor’s training Improving the quality of medical education across all medical schools in New South Wales Our Council was in strong support of this document and a detailed version of the priorities above can be accessed via our website – www.nswmsc.org.au

    1. NSW State Election Priorities

    Our team is committed to representing the interests of medical students across NSW. In consultation with the NSW Medical Societies, the NSWMSC produced the following list of priorities for the upcoming NSW State Election 2015:

    A guaranteed internship position for every NSW-trained medical graduate

    Reviewing the NSW priority ranking system for internship applications

    Improved financial support for medical students during prevocational training

    Greater funding for mental health support during all aspects of a doctors training

    Improving the quality of medical education across all medical schools in New South Wales

    Our Council was in strong support of this document and a detailed version of the priorities above can be accessed via our website www.nswmsc.org.au

  • 2. Advocacy

    In order to better represent the NSW medical students both on a state and national level, we held our first Council meeting in February this year (traditionally held in April). Together with the Medical Societies, we are regularly surveying medical students and inviting them to comment on issues are currently affecting them. We will be meeting the NSW Shadow Health Minister (together with AMSA) and the NSW Health Ministers Chief of Staff to discuss our 2015 State Election Priorities. We will also be meeting with other key stakeholders throughout the year, including the NSW Medical Deans.

    3. Medical Internship Training Review

    We are participating in the NSW consultation forums regarding examination of the current internship model and potential ways to improve the provision of career information. Students have been invited to comment and share their thoughts ahead of the forums.

    4. Student Engagement & Events

    In order to better engage with students, we are currently working on:

    Upskilling opportunities we have recently offered scholarships to the 3rd International Tick Borne Diseases Conference (worth $450 each) and the iDEA15 Conference (worth $100 each)

    Setting up a mailing list, for regular updates and opportunities Ensuring our website remains an information hub, where

    students can find details of relevant acadmic events, conferences, MedSoc events open to all NSW medical students

    Mental Health First Aid Training NSWMSC will work with NSWMSC Reps in organising small group courses locally

    Revamping our annual publication, RUBIX

    5. Other goals for this year Incorporation of the organisation

    Not-for-profit status Strengthen relationships with key stakeholders in NSW
