NPS International School offers two exciting Early Years learning programmes, the Montessori and the Kindergarten, for children between ages 3 to 6.

Students from grades I to VIII acquire skill sets and a knowledge domain that prepares them for entry into either the IGCSE (International Cambridge Certification) or CBSE international. Both these programmes prepare them for more advanced study programmes such as the CBSE (Senior Secondary), and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD) programme.

The curriculum encompasses core subjects i.e. English, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and Languages in addition to subjects like Computer Science, Art and Design, Music (Western and Indian), Dance, Drama and Physical education. Specialist teachers provide instruction and guidance in the latter group.

Language options include English, French and Hindi. Other languages like Korean, Spanish, Japanese, Tamil would be offered if the numbers of students make it viable.

NPS International School is committed to integrating modern information technology into the primary, middle and senior years curriculum.

The ECA programme is considered an extension of the Foundation Physical Education and Arts Curriculum at NPS International School. The programmes and activities are typically offered after school for a duration of one term (10 - 12 weeks) and have a separate activity fee.

The Montessor i p rog ramme and the Kindergarten programmes are offered at the early childhood level - ages 3 to 6.

The Montessori programme, a course of 3 year duration, offered to 3 to 5 year old children, is based on traditional Montessori principles of multi-sensory and sequential learning. Specially designed equipment and learning resource provide interesting and valuable learning opportunities for children at a self directed pace. It incorporates the vertical integration of 3, 4 and 5 year olds in one environment.

The Kindergarten programme is for a duration of two years and is offered to students at 4 years of age. The two entry points in to the Kindergarten are at 4 years of age, into Lower Kindergarten or at 5 years of age, into Upper Kindergarten. A large number of carefully designed, hands-on, interactive learning experiences build a strong academic foundation in children.

The school uses Jolly Phonics as a first step to reading for the beginners, while the emerging readers are presented with elements of the Oxford reading scheme. Both Jolly Phonics and the Oxford reading tree are tried and tested schemes providing a sound foundation for developing reading and writing skills in children.

The curriculum for Early Years has been developed by NPS International School.

PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME

The Primary Years cater to students from Grades I through V. The class sizes are restricted to an average of 25 students ensuring individual attention to each child. The curriculum is broad based with emphasis on the core subjects - English, Mathematics, Social studies and Science. Students are engaged in experiential learning through a variety of resources in order to develop the appropriate knowledge and skill levels. Art, Music, Drama and Physical Education are additional curricular offerings for all students.

MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME

At grades VI-VIII, the programme is designed as a pre-CBSE and pre-IGCSE foundation level programme in which several of the skills stressed in the IGCSE and CBSE are developed early. The academic programme promotes breadth of study, that is invaluable to students as they prepare for grades IX and X. There are many enrichment activities including outbound trips and exchanges with other reputed schools.

GRADE IX & X

The IGSCE Curriculum from CIE, UK is offered in grades IX and X where the students study 8-9 IGCSE subjects. Students are encouraged to take extended syllabi. They also frequently opt for the challenging accelerated Mathematics programme. The sciences are taught separately, so that the students may opt for two or three sciences in preparation for their IB or CBSE studies in grades XI and XII. Emphasis is placed upon giving students a broad foundation to keep choices open for their IB Diploma course selection and career choices.

The IGCSE programme is used internationally in over 157 countries. Students who have come from different educational backgrounds can gain acceptance at universities, but students with a broad array of IGCSE passes, particularly at grade C or above, have a selective advantage at the best universities and colleges worldwide.

IGCSE graduates are seen as robust proof that students can perform well in their further education, and the fact that every subject is externally examined and any coursework moderated by well-trained professionals is a definitive proof of achievement. More information about the IGCSE programme may be obtained from the website www.cie.org.uk.

GRADE IX & X

With effect from the Academic Year 2010-11, the School has embraced the new version of CBSE syllabus, CBSE international. This programme offered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), India, at grade IX requires students to study Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English, a language and creative arts.

CBSE-i is aimed to be the international version of CBSE. It aims at preparing learners to face global challenges. The programme also aims to promote critical thinking, communication and media skills.

.

There is no mandatory Board Examination at Secondary (Class X) level for students studying in the schools affiliated to the CBSE-i Board. Instead, there are four Formative and two Summative Assessments in one year. Assessments include varied tools l ike presentations, projects, surveys or model making other than paper and pen tests.

The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) card will apply throughout the CBSE Programme for admission to grade XI. Students are promoted on the basis of both formative and summative assessments both of which are mandatory.

The heart of the programme consists of Core components like Development of Perspectives, Research, Life Skills and SEWA (Social Empowerment through Work and Action). Students completing CBSE-i are expected to have the skills to be successful in the IB diploma and in university studies world wide. More information can be obtained from the CBSE website - www.cbsei.com.

Increasing numbers of IB diploma students gain acceptance at colleges like Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and Ivy League colleges in the US every year. They owe their success not only to their IB diplomas but also to their preparation for the admission process.

Our subject choices for IBDP include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, French, Hindi, English, Psychology, History, Geography, Business & Management, Economics and Visual Arts.

For more information please visit the official website at: www.ibo.org

NPS International School offers the IB and CBSE programmes for grades XI and XII from 2010. The IB Diploma curriculum requires that students study six courses at higher level or standard level, thus ensuring breadth of learning in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. In addition, the programme has three core requirements - Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) which challenge students to apply their learning to develop broad skills and attitudes. Each student writes an Extended Essay of 4000 words in a subject of his or her choice, and an essay of 1,500 words in Theory of Knowledge (TOK). The IB Diploma has increasingly been regarded as the 'gold card' in university and college placements.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES AND TRIPSClassroom learning is complemented by enriching outdoor experiences and challenges. In groups, students travel to various places such as Pulau Tioman (Malaysia), China, Thailand, Cambodia, India and Taman Negara National Park (Malaysia) and engage in activities like snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, river rafting, cycling, horse riding, jungle trekking, camping, swimming and explore a variety of different cultures and habitats in the process. These special learning opportunities are critical in building students' self esteem and confidence, and allow our students to develop valuable qualities like leadership and team spirit.

Such outdoor trips are offered on payment of costs by the students to defray the trip expenses and are organised in collaboration with expert agencies.

CREATIVE PROJECTSBesides outbound activities and sports, our students participate in carnivals, exhibitions, "Show & Tell", Annual Day stage productions and inter-house cultural activities. We offer Visual Arts as a subject option in the IB Diploma Programme, training in the artistic fields of music, dance, creative writing, dramatics and craftwork, many of them in collaboration with renowned institutions.

An excellent example of blending creativity with environmental awareness is the Sphinx, built by students using recycled beverage cans. The NPS International Yearbook and the Annual Day productions are the quintessential epitomes of our students' creative, leadership and artistic skills. The NPS International School quarterly online newsletter, Probe, is managed independently by students. Such opportunities impress upon the students the importance of life outside the world of studies, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academics. Our students have also been participating in creative competitions like Art Contests, VIVUM inter-school competition and Straits Times Newspaper competition.

SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS

Beyond developing students' interest and talents in the sporting arena and on the performing stage, students at NPS International School are guided to understand the importance and value of making a contribution to the community and support less fortunate people of all ages and from various backgrounds.

At NPS International School, service to society forms an integral part of our education framework. We aim to inculcate, in the students, compassion and kindness towards others and develop a habit of helping the less fortunate. The students have participated in initiatives like doing service at the Moral Home for Disabled and Challenged Adults, hosting fundraising activities geared towards funding Braille Machines for a blind school in Jodhpur, the Netraheen Vikas Sansthan, doing service at Ren Ci Community Hospital and raising funds for learning centres for first generation female students, f rom socia l ly and economical ly disadvantaged sections, in rural India, in collaboration with IIMPACT, a social organisation.

Our Teachers

Most international schools have good physical infrastructure and we are no exception. However, where NPS aims to make a difference is in the professional calibre of its faculty. Our teachers are carefully chosen and nurtured with sustained training in all round effectiveness, both in the classroom and outside. Teachers are well qualified with 100 % of them being graduates in the subjects of study. About 60% of them have a further post graduate degree or specialised education in their discipline. Nearly three-fourths of the faculty have at least ten years of teaching experience, many of them in international environments like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Canada, UK, Australia, USA, Russia, Hong Kong, etc. Besides academic competence, our teachers are passionate about their pursuit and committed to exemplary pastoral care. Several of our senior school teachers are certified trainers and examiners of international Boards like IBO and CIE (Cambridge).

Our Students

Students at NPS are from many different nationalities and varied childhood environments. Indian, Australian, American, British, Malaysian, Be lg ian , Japanese , Tha i , Canad ian , Singaporean and New Zealanders form the core of the student cohort. Students from small preparatory schools often join our school and ease into our environment comfortably, thanks to our pastoral systems that include appropriate buddy and scaffolding mechanisms. NPS is also fortunate to be tutoring students with a multitude of interests – a chess prodigy, a musical maestro and an artistic genius are among the student population who exhibit rare talents and different interests. We believe that this diversity of cohort persona helps shape the peers’ holistic thinking.

UNIVERSITY COUNSELLING

NPS International School recognizes that the university/college selection process is one that requires much time and discussion among students, parents and the Counsellor. It is with this in mind that NPS has set up a comprehensive counselling programme to assist students and their families.

COUNSELLING

Counselling services are available for the entire student body. Students are usually referred by a parent, teacher or the School Principal/Vice Principals. All parents are welcome to contact the counsellors if they have concerns about their children. On occasion, following consultation with parents, students maybe referred to outside specialists for additional support and/or investigation. All consultations with the counsellor are kept completely confidential, except in life-threatening circumstances or when serious legal issues are involved.
