Diabetes is a disease that happens when the body cannot properly use food for energy. Type 2 diabetes is linked to an unhealthful diet and sedentary habits. Approximately 25.8 million people in the United States have diabetes. That’s 8.3% of the U.S. population. Further, 7 million of those people with diabetes don’t know that they have it. According to a study published in Diabetes Care, every kilo9gram of weight that an obese person loses reduces his/her risk of diabetes by 16%. The diet and nutritional factors that have been linked to diabetes and the physi- cal activity elements have been in previous news articles. So, to pro- mote the awareness of American Diabetes Month, here are a few true or false questions. 1. It is easy to tell if you have recently devel- oped type 2 diabetes. 2. Age and being overweight or obese does not increase your risk of developing the disease. 3. You have no control over any of the risk factors of type 2 dia- betes. The answer to all of these is false. Risk factors for type 2 dia- betes includes age, family history, prior history of gestational diabetes, being overweight or obese, impaired glucose toler- ance or insulin resistance, physical inactivity, con- sumption of high-fat, high-sugar and a refined carbohydrate diet. Five common symptoms of type 2 diabetes include increased thirst, increased uri- nation, blurred vision, lack of energy and more frequent infec- tions. Major concerns in Southeast Oklahoma involves our large number of seniors. By 75, one in five Americans wioll have type 2 diabetes. Diagnoses of type 2 dia- betes have been on the rise since 1990. We are not helpless regarding this disease. If we increase the types of foods that promote good health and increase physical activity, the risks become consid- erably less.
