“There are no gains without pains” -Benjamin Franklin
Did you know that Benjamin Franklin was one of the first exercise gurus? Nearly 300 years ago, he recommended that adults get a minimum of 45 minutes of exercise every day. His new book, The Benjamin Franklin Diet explains how he used exercise to increase his own health and longevity. Below is an excerpt from the book.
Everyone has heard the phrase, no pain, no gain. As contemporary as it sounds, it was Ben Franklin who coined these famous words back in the eighteenth century when he wrote, “There are no gains without pains.”

New Football Field November 6, 2015 Ally Richardson Page4
A huge change is about to happen for Allen East, we are most likely getting a synthetic surface on the football field. The reason for this is because the field is having major drainage problems and it is eroding the soil which could possibly harm the football players. Some holes were 3 feet deep in the end zone. We had the chance to interview our Principal, Mr. Baumgartner. We asked him what he thought about the idea of turf. Here is what he said.
Q: Is getting synthetic turf actually going
to happen?
A: It looks like it will but it is not 100%
certain. The School Board and
Superintendent are looking at bid
offers and if the bids come in at what
they want we will do it but the price
cannot be higher than what the board
wants.
Q: When do you think they will start
working on the field?
A: If the bids go as correct they will start
working on it by mid or at the end of
May. They will only need 2 ½ to 3
months to get it all installed.
Q: Will we ever have to replace the turf
field?
A: Yes we will have to replace the field
every 10-12 years.
Q: Do you want this major change to
happen?
A: Yes, because I think it is a positive for
the students because all sports can
play on it, like if it is raining the
baseball team is able to practice on it.
Q: Do you think it will save us more
money in the long run?
A: It is hard to judge it wouldn’t be a
huge savings but it would save us a
lot of man labor because with turf we
wouldn’t have to line and mow the
field and everything else that goes
with taking care of a grass field.
Q: Will the turf be blue or green?
A: My preference would be green.
The board was offered a bid for 135,000 to fix the problems in the natural grass but they did not take the
offer because they are thinking about getting turf. The Allen East Board of Education has been looking at
bids to see how much it would cost to replace our football field now, with synthetic turf. The school is able
to seek bids from architectural/engineer farms and turf companies. The board is waiting for the bids to
come back to see if the school’s system can afford it, according to Mel Rentschler, our Superintendent (in
the Lima News). The board doesn’t want to figure out the cost but they want to plan a timeline. Their goal
is to try and get next year’s football and soccer teams playing on turf. In the month of October there was a
meeting open to the public to vote for the turf field and 92% were in favor of it.

This year our high school has the option to give a little more than just a gift this holiday season. Our first if two blood drives will be held Friday November 13 in the auxiliary gym.
Someone in the US needs blood every two seconds,
so if you're up for doing a good deed, donating
blood is a phenomenal choice. More than 41,000
blood donations are needed each day, and because
blood cannot be manufactured, we need people
like you too help!
The blood drive is going too held on Friday November 13 from 7:30 to 1:30 in the gym.
Sign up during lunch this week!

This year the school had some major and minor changes. The start and end of
school day and the number of minutes per period are two of the major changes
that had happened to the school. In some cases these changes may be a good
thing but there are some cons to go with the pros.
This year the two
buildings have new
start and end times.
The Elementary
Building now starts at
8:05 instead of last
year’s 8:31. They get
out at 2:57 instead of
last year’s 2:55. Mr.
Baumgartner said that
they made the days
longer because before
our school days were
the minimum amount
that Ohio allowed. With
testing and other
materials teachers
needed more time to
cover the information,
so for that reason they
moved the classes from
40 minutes to 48
minutes. This year high
school starts early as
well, even earlier than
the elementary does.
The high school starts
at 7:53 and they get
out at 3:05. For the
students the pro to
starting earlier is the
kids get to keep getting
out of school for
summer break in May.
While the cons include
the busses coming
earlier meaning the
kids need to get up
earlier than normal to
make sure they don’t
miss the bus. We asked
some kids their
thoughts on this new
schedule. Here are
what some of them
thought:
“To look on the positive
note at least we get to
keep our long summer
vacation.”
-Kacy
Carter
“I don’t like the fact I have to
wake up earlier than I
normally did.”
-Mason DuVernay
“I don’t like it why? Because I have to wake up earlier. Why? Because I live too far.”
-Nate Twining

S.A.D.D is such a wonderful thing for not only Allen East but also many more schools. It shows kids that there is much more to life than harming their bodies in various ways. Recently the S.A.D.D. team was able to give us a little glimpse of what life would be like without all the various destructive decisions in our lives. It also gave us examples of what these destructive decisions can do. The assembly was very fun and enjoyable yet very serious.
The high school secretary had announced that all the students were supposed to go to the gym after the end of the third period bell. The halls were swarmed with all the students, and it took a while for everyone to get in there and get seats. When they walked in, there was loud music playing and S.A.D.D. students greeting the students in the front entrance of the gymnasium. Once everyone got quiet, each of the S.A.D.D. students were announced as they danced down the middle of the gym floor. It was really enjoyable to see all the cool dance moves. Then to get the crowd loosened up everyone
played a game called “The Safe Driving Dance” which was taught to the S.A.D.D. by Bill Cordes. While everyone was waiting for all the contestants to learn the dance we did the class cheer of “hey mustangs.” The crowd had a contest between all the classes and Mrs. Prichard said that the seniors won although some felt that the freshman should’ve won. After all the fun and games were done, the skits had started. They showed us that you don’t have to pretend to be someone that you’re not just to fit in. The skits were very powerful they gave us all an example of what very bad decisions
can do to us. In the end Mrs. Prichard explained to us that her only wish was for us to be safe and to think about our decisions before we make them.

The group name may be a little misleading sometimes but did you know that Fellowship of Christian Athletes isn’t just for athletes? The kids in FCA are all different and have different hobbies and interest. We had the chance to talk to one of FCA’s regular attendees about it. Her name is:
Kelsey Ball Q: How is FCA going so far?
A: It is going really good. We have a lot of speakers coming up.
Q: How long have you been attending FCA?
A: I have been attending since I was a freshman.
Q: What is your favorite thing
about FCA?
A: My favorite thing is seeing the different speakers and their point of views.
Q: What would you like the outcome for
FCA to be?
A: The total outcome I wish to be is a lot more people coming.
Q: If you could change something about
FCA, what would it be?
A: I wish we could have it somewhere bigger for more people to come.
Q: Do you think FCA impacts your
classmates?
A: Honestly yes, that is our goal.
Q: Does the FCA have any plans coming up?
A: The only thing we have planned is speakers and we may be doing fields of faith.
Q: Tell us about the FCA CORE
group?
A: Our CORE group is people who attend regularly and we strengthen
our ability to make FCA better.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to
add?
A: Come join FCA, we have meetings every three Wednesday’s at 7 AM in Mrs. Prichard’s room. P.S. There are donuts!

Show Choir is beginning to take over our vocal talent here at Allen East and just about
everyone knows why. The Allen East Show Choir is taking a big step into the musical
department of our school and is hopefully going to be one of the big successes. Moving in a
different direction then what our retired Mrs. Spencer had used to go, Ms. Lindherst
plans to focus on an accelerated show choir rather than an average choir.
Choir Events
The show choir has a few upcoming events
for their 2015-2016 year. Today the
group has gone to Heidelberg University
for the college’s Music Day that they host
each year. The Show Choir also has an
upcoming school musical that any grade
may participate in. The musical is over the
Sound of Music and show dates are far
off into the month of April, where they will
show on the 22nd and 23rd. On Thursday
November 5th, the Allen East Choir had
performed for the Mustang Breakfast
Club.
BRASS November 2nd, 2015 Lacey Wright Page 11
This year’s Brass season has sadly come to an end. They had an outstanding season and had
so much fun cheering on the football players. It was a tough end to the season but the Brass
was behind the boys the whole way! We had the chance to interview the awesome man who
makes the Brass as good as it is! That’s right, Mr. Dellifield.
Q: Is there anything interesting
you want people to know about
you before we start?
A: I authored a book called Ten-
Hut. In 1965 I won the halftime
show contest at Purdue
University and had my show
performed at halftime of the game. I also
developed a film called “Marching and Dancing
Brass Men.”
Q: How do you think this brass season went?
A: It was an outstanding year. We don’t rebuild
we reload. I promised the seniors that I wouldn’t
compare them to last year’s seniors and they
went above and beyond to exceed my
expectations. Thanks to them the
legacy is strong, if not stronger and
the challenge begins for the class of
’17 to exceed the same expectations.
Q: Do you think the junior class can
do as well as the seniors did this year?
A: Absolutely! I expect them to exceed not only
my expectations but last years’ expectations also.
Q: What expectations do you
have for the upcoming seniors?
A: To set their own goals and
with their goals they set the
Brass’s goals. What are their
expectations of me? What are
their expectations for the
brass? Are they up to these challenges? (Is there
a number 8 next year???)
Q: What is something you’re going to miss about
this year’s seniors?
A: The comradery, the bonding/long talks and
the sharing of dreams and goals.
Q: Is there anything else you would
like to add?
A: See you next year! Come back
December 1st and see the planning
board for 2016. PS: There is still
time to sign up for Varsity Pep
Band!
Varsity Football November 6, 2015 Olivia Lawrence Pg. 13
As this football season comes to an end, the Allen East Varsity Football Team.
fought hard in their last two games. This is the best record we have had in years.
On Friday October 23, 2015 the boys
played Spencerville. The final score
was 48-27 with the bearcats winning
over Allen East. Spencerville made
the score 21-0 in the first half until
Spencer Miller scored a touchdown
to make the score 21-7 at the end of
the first half. In the third
quarter, Miller found
Caleb Smelcer for the
touchdown pass making
the score 28-14. In the
fourth quarter Logan Schick ran the
ball for a touchdown and Luke
Perkins caught a pass from Miller to
make the final score 48-27. After this
game their record went to 6-3 and
3-3 in NWC. On Friday October 30,
2015 the boys played Ada. The final
score was 21-6 with Ada beating
Allen East. In the first quarter,
Perkins caught a pass from Miller
making the score 6-0. Then in the
second quarter, Ada scored two
touchdowns to end the half
making the score 14-6. In
the third quarter, Ada
scored again making the
score 21-6. The fourth
quarter was scoreless. The Ada game
was the last game for the boys of the
2015 football season. After this
game, their record was 6-4 and 3-4 in
the NWC. Good job boys!
The boys fought hard this season making their record the best
in years. Their final record was 6-4 and 3-4 in the NWC. This is
the first winning record the team has had in a few years.

season. Read on to find out more.
The offense for the Allen East Junior
varsity football team is coached by

varsity football team has had one of
the best seasons in a while. The

another loss to Delphos Jefferson (22-

been a great season for the boys this
year. After last year’s successful

a winning record was big for the
football program.

Girls Soccer November 6, 2015 Ally Richardson Page 17
The girl’s team had many accomplishments once again this year. Coach Houston was voted Coach of the Year. Many girls made first and second team and some received honorable mentions. Also they got NWC champions for the 3rd year in a row now! They had to work hard to receive that title once again and they are hoping to do it again next season. The team did lose their tournament game which wasn’t how they wanted their season to end but they still had many positives.
The girl’s season was
officially over on
October 24 they
fought really hard
but couldn’t pull out
a win. They played Crestview Ashland at
home. The score in the first half was 1-
1 but in the second half Crestview
Ashland came back scoring 3 more
goals making the final
score 4-1. Jade Meyer
was our only scorer.
The team fought until
the final whistle blew.
They may not have
won but they still
played a really good
game. There were
many fans that came
out and supported the
team which was very
nice to see. The girl’s
ended the season with their final record
being 11-5.
The girl’s are very
sad the season is
over and the team is
also very sad it was
Alexis McCluer and
Savannah Silone’s last game but they
can’t wait until next year. The seniors
next year will be Jade Meyer, Leah
Casey, Madison Staley, Kasey Reneau,
Kassidy Reneau, Lori
Bassett, and Mya
Gossard. This years
team still has to meet
one more time because
they have the Fall
Sports Banquet. The banquet will be
held on November 10, 2015. The team
had a very
successful year
once again and
should have
another good year
next season, come
out and cheer on
the Lady Mustangs next year!

out of the game.
Q. How long does each
round last?
A. Each round lasts as long as it needs
to last until all the
spoons are gone.
