The Last Judgment“In the great parable of the

Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) Jesusidentifies himself with those in need. As you did it to one of the least ofthese my brethren, you did it to me.”Those who listen to Jesus’ words aresurprised, since we hear them ask: “Lord, when did we see you hungryand feed you?” And the answer:“Itell you, solemnly, insofar as you didthis for one of the least of these brothers, you did it forme” (Matt. 37-40). Love of God and love of neighbor havebecome one: in the least of the brethren, we find Jesushimself, and in Jesus we find God. Pope Benedict XVI

Faithful ones prayed daily the words of the Book of

Deuteronomy which expressed the heart of theirexistence: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord your God is oneLord, and you shall love the Lord your God with all yourheart, and with all your soul and with all your might (6:4-5). Jesus united into a single precept this commandmentof love for God and the commandment of love forneighbor found in the Book of Leviticus: “You shall loveyour neighbor as yourself” (19:18; cf. Mk 12:29:31). Love ofGod and love of neighbor are thus inseparable, they forma single commandment. Pope Benedict XVI

Jesus is the prophet of love... Jesus

came above all to teach us love. Itconstitutes the content of the greatestcommandment he left to us. Truelove of one’s neighbor is, at the sametime, love of God. Some peoplemay be astonished by this. Itcertainly IS astonishing! St. John Paul II

Charity is greater than any

rule. Moreover, all rules mustlead to charity.

St. Vincent de Paul

Do not grieve or complain that

you were born in a time whenyou can no longer see God inthe flesh. That privilege hasnot, in fact, been taken fromyou. As Jesus says, “Whateveryou have done to the least ofthese, you have done to Me.” St. Augustine

The school of Christ is the school of charity. On the last

day, when general examination takes place, there will beno questions at all on the texts of Aristotle, the aphorismsof Hippocrates, or the Paragraphs of Justinian. Charitywill be the whole syllabus. St. Robert Bellarmine

At the end of life we will not

be judged by how manydiplomas we have received, how much money we havemade, how many great thingswe have done. We will bejudged by “I was hungry andyou gave me to eat .... naked ...homeless ....” Hungry not onlyfor bread – but hungry for love.

Naked not only for clothing – but naked of humandignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of aroom of bricks – but homeless because of rejection.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

The most Blessed Sacrament is Christ made visible.

The poor sick person is Christ again made visible. St. Gerard Majella

What good is it if the Eucharistic

Table is overloaded with goldenchalices, when he is dying of

hunger? The temple of our afflicted

neighbor’s body is more holy thanthe altar of stone on which youcelebrate the holy sacrifice. You are

able to contemplate this altar everywhere, in the streetand in the open squares. St. John Chrysostom

Prayer on the Solemnity of Christ the King

Father, all powerful, God of love, you have raised our Lord Jesus Christ from death to life, resplendent in glory as King of creation. As king he claims dominion over all creation, that he may present to you, his almighty Father, an eternal and universal kingdom: a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love, and peace.Open our hearts, free all the world to rejoice in his peace,to glory in his justice, to live in his love.Bring all humankind together in Jesus Christ your Son,whose kingdom is with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Origins of The Advent Wreath Advent traditions reflect a spirit of expectation and, therefore, unfold gradually. Probably the most popular tradition today is the lighting of candles on an AdventWreath in both churches and homes. This custom originated among Lutherans inGermany in the 16th century and quickly became popular in other areas. Alongwith the Christmas tree, it is probably an example of Christianizing practicespopular from pre-Christian times. There had always been a festival of burningspecial light and fire at the end of November and beginning of December inGermanic lands as the darkness of winter becomes more severe. This traditioncontinued into modern times. In the 1500's it took on a distinct Christiansymbolism as the Advent Wreath, first among Lutherans in eastern Germany andthen among all German Protestants and Catholics. This tradition came to Americawith German immigrants. It was popularized among Catholics with the liturgicalmovement in the 1950's.

The Advent Wreath, which may be of any size, is made of evergreens and is placed on a table or suspended fromthe ceiling. There are four candles - one for each week of Advent. After the wreath is blessed on the first Sunday of Advent, a prayer is prayed and a candle lit. This ceremony repeatson each of the following three Sundays. Light increases, pushing out darkness, with another candle lit until all fourare burning. Wreaths have always been symbolic of victory and glory. The basic symbolism of the Advent wreath goes beyondthis. It lies in the tension between darkness and light. It represents the long time when people lived in spiritualdarkness, waiting for the coming of the Messiah, the light of the world. Each year in Advent people wait once againin darkness for the coming of the Lord, his historical coming in the mystery of Bethlehem, his final coming at the endof time, and his special coming in every moment of grace.

From “Catholic Customs and Traditions” by Greg Dues

How To Make An Advent Wreath Begin with a round piece of Styrofoam, available at craft shops. Cut four evenly-spaced holes into which you willplace the four candles. Use three purple or blue candles and one rose candle (for the third Sunday). You may also adda white candle for Christmas. You’ll find it helpful to place the styrofoam circle on a pizza-pan or round cookie sheetcovered with foil so that you can easily move your wreath to and from the table. Place evergreen branches over thestyrofoam. Encourage the children to participate as they are able, by gathering branches, placing candles and so on.
